RE: MORE best audio card

RE: MORE best audio card

2001-03-16 by James Nitti

Has anybody tried the Frontier cards on a Mac yet? I'm in the same boat, but looking at a new card for a G4. I was just about to go with the MOTU 2408 when I read all the negative posts here. I need ADAT I/O but also the ability to monitor via analog. I'll probably just end up with another digi001. I was hoping to be able to use something with ASIO support though. People are pretty happy with the Hammerfall, huh? I suppose I could buy some sort of AD/DA converter so I could still use my mackie mixer and microphones for analog inputs (which I don't use that often) and to hook up a pair of speakers. That starts to really add to the cost though.

Is the MOTU really so bad on a Mac? I did have a bad experience using Logic with a Midi Express-XT USB. I finally just gave it away and bought a Unitor. I just hated having to run FreeMIDI and OMS between LAMP and the MidiExpress. The native support in Logic for the Unitor is wonderful, and it's been several months before I could even consider a MOTU product again.

It's a question of latency, and yes a lot of pros complain about it.

How about the Digidesign 001 card? Does it have low latency to be used with EXS24?

The three best Windows cards seem to be (in no particular order):

Digidesign 001: ASIO2, ADAT, 8 Analog
M-Audio Delta 1010: ASIO2, 8 Analog
Echo Layla 24: ASIO2, 8 Analog

For the money, the Digidesign is best. Which has best latency?

Thanks,
Mark

>From all the reports I've read, the Hammerfall is superior. If you need
analog, add an A/D converter like the AlesisI3. Hammerfall seems to have the
best performance on latency from what I hear.

Anyone shopping for cards should check this site out thoroughly for
performance/ASIO and such. It offers real world user-test/comparisons...

I understand how you feel about MOTU, but I've been using a 2408 on the Mac
with Logic Platinum for a year and a half and it ROCKS! No problems, and it
is very solid. PC I can't vouch for...but I wanted to set the record straight
for Mac folks. Latency is much better than Digi001 BTW. Hammerfall and 2408
are equally good on Mac IMO.

My guess is that their Firewire interface will work equally well on a Mac.

Not the case at all....latency is VERY low on 2408 Mac.

What about the seasound soloist, does anybody work with it already?
Seems promising, not many i/o, but preamps, monitoring and drivers, which
are, according to their website, velocity engine optimized.

I apologize if my assessment is incorrect, but I am truthfully sharing the
opinions of several advance users regarding the 2408. Even my equipment rep
suggests the Hammerfall and others over the 2408, based on his research.
Despite all this, you may be right. However, it deserves some scrutiny given
what I have heard. In support of your argument though, the DSP rating on
http://www.digitalnaturalsound.com/logic_dsp/ gives it high marks for ASIO
bandwidth, and that can be more important than latency in a lot of
situations. It's important to note that you will not notice much latency if
both your audio out and MIDI out are equally latent. You notice it more if
they are unequal, and some people hear latency when others do not...

...So I guess we're splitting hairs here. The 2408 is still a good value for
analog I/O, just not my top recommendation. -Jer
