how many simultaneous voices do you get

how many simultaneous voices do you get

2003-03-26 by Jeff Fisher

I am thinking of moving from a Tibook 500 (the original with no L3
cache and 1 Meg of L2) to the new Powerbook G4s with the 166 bus speed
and DDR RAM (either 17 inch or 15"). My main reason for doing this is
that my present machine craps out before I finsh a large orchestration
using EXS24 Mk II using many voices.
Has anyone got one of these machines yet, and if so, how many
simultaneous voices can you get
before Logic stops playback? Can I expect a really significant
performance boost?

I was wondering, with Logic V6 you can use the freeze function to
overcome this. Are you using V6?

Hi Jeff,
I have the new Tibook G4 1ghz. My experience with OSX is limited and that is what I"m using now...but I have 31 instances of EXS running loaded with high quality Giga samples...like Rare instruments, Garritan Strings, Dan Dean winds etc...I think I've just maxed out the system...I need to check the polyphony...I can tell you I"m getting much better performance...subjectively twice as good as my old G4 Tibook 400 mhz. I'll to a little checking and get back...

Re: [EXS] usability at high processor load?

2003-03-27 by Tom Harrer

Hi

I work mainly with the EXS these days and am thinking of upgrading.
I've been following the logic and exs lists, but one thing has not been
discussed that I really need to know...

My G4 400 becomes very sluggish when pushed beyond half load. I would
like to get a laptop but I'm concerned that this issue only goes away
with dual processors. Can anyone comment on how hard you can push a
dual proc machine compared to a single proc. From previous posts it is
my understanding that you can virtually max out a dual proc and the
user interface behaves the same as with no load. Is this accurate?
BTW I am running OS 10.2.4

I don't suppose there will ever be dual proc laptops due to power
consumption??

Until recently, I didn't think an OS9 dual Mac was much better than a
single-processor for Logic on OS9. Things have changed. I learned that
inserting the I/O Logic Helper plug, designating an output, then
deactivating the plugin (leaving it on the channel strip), throws all the
plugins on that channel strip to the other processor. Now I can maximize the
usage of both processors and I'm never hurting for DSP. Another use of the
I/O plugin is that it fixes the crackle problem for UAD-1 users who get
problems when putting something like the Pultec on the Master fader. The
fix? Put an I/O plugin on every channel with a UAD-1 VST effect, making sure
you designate an input/output on the deactivated plugin, just like in the
other situation. I'm thrilled right now. All my problems are currently
solved. Dual 800 user in OS9.2.2 (Logic 6)! Logic has never been better.

I too have been having problems with the UAD card and have
tried the work around using the IO plug in but it does not always
work. Here is my question for you. When you assign the IO plug
in to the audio or audio instrument track on which you wish to
use a UAD plug in when you designate the input and output on
the deactivated plugin what settings are you using. For example,
say I want to use a pultec eq on audio instrument 1 (and I have
put an exs24 instrument on audio track one with a kick drum in
mono)> So I put a Logic IO helper in the top plug in slot,
however, out of the available choices I do not know which input
number to select. I usually select output 9 because 9
corresponds with my main analog out in my asio configuration.
If you could point out what I am doing wrong it would be greatly
appreciated. I am using the following gear:

G4 450, OS 9.2.2, 512 megs ram, Logic Audio Platinum 6.0,
Sound Diver, 3.04, UAD-1 card, Motu PCI-324 card, Waves Gold
Bundle Native, Absynth, Virtual Guitarist, Unitor 8 II, AMT8. I am
using the Motu PCI-324 console v. 2.4 which when installed
placed asio driver version 2.1 in my Logic ASIO drivers folder,
and placed PCI-324 Sound Manager Driver v. 1.2. in my
extensions folder, and placed the PCI driver v. 1.5 in my
extension folder as well.

thanks

I always use input/output 1 or 1 and 2. It's rather trivial since the plugin
is then disabled anyway, thereby routing nowhere. It just doesn't work if
you don't do this. I don't get crackle (to my knowledge) on the instrument
tracks. It's only when it's paired with UAD plugs on the Master, Buss, or
Aux that I need to insert the I/O plug on all the UAD tracks. I haven't
tested the Pultec on an instrument track by itself though. Universal Audio
says they're working with Emagic on making this process more automatic. -Jer
