Hi everybody. I'm new. Are there comparisons with other soft samplers?

2003-04-16 by Doug Wellington

Hi,

I've been sampling with some old Peavey gear (SP/SX-II) and
more recently with a Korg Triton, but I'm really considering
the switch to a computer-based setup. I have both PCs and
Macs, so I'm in quite the dilemma as to which way to go. I
have been using Cubase SX lately because it works on both
platforms, but the new Logic is really tempting me. I also
use Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro, so it would be cool to
have an all-Apple solution! :-) (Now, if I could only afford
a copy of Shake...)

So, my real question to you folks is, do you know if there is
some kind of comparison article/note/email/etc between EXS24
and the other soft samplers (Kontakt, Halion, etc) that would
help me decide which one to buy? So far, the only demo I have
come up with has been of Kontakt, but that doesn't tell me much
about how it compares to the others...

Thanks!
-Doug

[EXS] Virtual Memory tweaking?

2003-04-18 by Darcy Phillips

Hi all,

Just got the Bardstown Bosendorfer. Awesome. One amazing piano sample.

When the sound is that good, it really makes me feel like playing, and
digging in, and putting the pedal down and...basically playing a lot of
notes. So the polyphony adds up, and my powerbook(667) begins to hit the
limit. It's not too bad, on the version without filter it is sometimes
actually difficult to hit the top of the performance meter, but if you do
certain things, like, obviously, put the pedal down and do a gliss or
something, you will. the version with filter is not quite as friendly, if I
do a fair amount of pedal down arpeggiation kind of playing, it will hit the
ceiling fairly easily. I do appreciate very much how gracefully the system
recovers though, it just interrupts the voices and carries on.

It's such a high quality sound, that I am happy to work around these things,
and I will be able to learn what kinds of things I can and cannot do live
with it. I can't wait to get it onstage. So far I'm very happy with it, and
I'm relieved that it delivers pretty much the way the demos suggest.

Anyway, my question was about the performance of the virtual memory. I have
it set on low for audio recording, and slow for hard disk, these would be
the optimal settings, wouldn't they? Is anyone aware of any other tweaks I
can do to decrease the cpu load? Would changing stuff on my soundcard
settings affect that?

thank you!

Darcy, very happy Bardstown customer

I would try "High" for Hard-disk recording and "Slow" for hard disk --
basically you want the biggest buffer size you can. You can see the effect of
the changes in the above settings in the RAM allocation box.

CPU cycles can be conserved to some degree by picking 32-bit float mode in the
EXS24 prefs and, at the cost of some audio quality, choosing normal instead of
best mode. "Best" mode uses a higher quality interpolation algorithm and uses
more CPU.

Murray

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
