PPC210 and S-DISC-II

PPC210 and S-DISC-II

2001-03-27 by waechter.dieter@emu.de

Hello guys,
this is my first day in this group, and I am glad to have found
people who are sill working with the 2101.
Please don't laugh about my "small- talk- english" because I know-
I'm not so goo in this language :-)
Ok! Here comes my first question:
But before I could tell it, I have to explain someting:
I have got two 2101, the first is a Nov'96 - Version (Artist, SV
3.00.a , One-EPROM- Version)
the second is a Jul'94- Version (SV 3.00.00.a, Two- EPROM-Version)
I bought it sone month ago. And some month ago I found some
interesting PPC210- Patches at the Internet, and I wanted to try
them. So I tried to get a PPC210. But I did'nt, because it's out of
production. I decidet to build 2 PPC210 by my own.
I have done that already. And they work fine. But there are some
problems/questions: If I use a S-DISC-II for the PPC210, it only
works at the Nov'96 - Version (there is a SMD- S-DISC II Processor in
this GSP2101). At the Jul'94- Version (placed with a S-DISC I) it
only causes big digital- noises like "chchfrsrchchfstchchfst....."
added to the sound. If I put in a S-DISC-I- Processor, the PPC210's
work good in both units. The known "cannon in echoplex- sound"
appears in both cases. There is no error on my self- made PPC210,
because with an original PPC210 (hired from a friend) the same effect
occurs.
Now my questions:
Does anybody know the differences between S-DISC-I and S-DISC-II?
Can anybody explain, why the S-DISC-I and S-DISC-II (on PPC210) can't
be combined?
Randy Thorderson explained
on "http://www.bstage.com/mail_archives/gsp-users/html/gsp-
users.9802/0117.html" that digitech will do a software-tweak to solve
the cannon- problem. Did digitech really do that tweak?
Thanx for every help,
Dieter

Dieter,

Its been a while and my brain is a bit foggy, but I believe
yes...they did....and that would be the v3 artist upgrade...which you
definitely want to get if you can find it. I would contact Digitech
first and see if its still available from them.

Anyone else remember anything different?

cheers

Hmmmm... now I'm just a little bit confused, because I thought that the
Software- Version "3.00.a" is the latest Digitech shipped. Steve, is the "v3
artist upgrade" not the same as the Software- Version "3.00.a".
As I already wrote I use the Software- Version "3.00.a" in my
one-EPROM-Machine.
And in my old 2- EPROM- Machine I stored the "3.00.00" Software- Version to
the EPROMS (a simple copy of the original 3.00.00- EPROMS). And then I
changed the 10 MHz crystal into a 20 MHz, and also the capacitors into 15
pF. So, that I finally get the "3.00.00.a"- Software.

You say "available". Do you mean, that once upon a time the software was
downloadable from the net?
Or did they only ship other EPROMs fore those, who has no EPROM- programmer.
But if it isn't availble from Digitech, it's no problem. I think someboby
does have this software, and if this one would send it to me, I will just
reprogram my EPROMs once again.

By the way, of course, I also changed the coil (L27) into an 10 Ohm-
reststor, to eliminate the boot- problem.

wew...way over my head. I missed the part you said about having 3.0a. Once
upon a time...we all bought 3.0a and it came to us as a chip replacement.
Unfortunately Digitech did not ever support the method you are doing...which
I must say is pretty impressive to say the least....if you get it all to
work properly.

Sorry for the confusion.

It works fine!
But you mustn't only change the EPROMS. You have to change the EPROMS (or
the Software), the crystal, the capacitors and the coil (to make it
perfect!).
Oh and not to forget.... a very important point is, to adjust the gain of
the preamp- section. Because the 2101-gains have changed over the years of
production. I think it's the potentiometer P9.
I normally set it to the Artist- gain- value.
And today- you have to build the PPC (because it's out of production)...
create the layout .... and so on...
If someone is interested I could post a hardware- "help your self" message

I think posting a HOW-TO document (with diagrams) would be extremely useful.
