My New 2101

My New 2101

2004-04-16 by telecasterkid

Hello all,
I just bought a 2101 off Ebay and received it yesterday. The packing
job wasn't the best but adequate I assume. Forgive me if am asking a
retorical question here but I have searched all 428 messages looking
for an answer to my issue before I posted.....So here goes. It is
circa '95 that has been upgraded to Artist 3.00 a software, single
PPC. When I turn it on it goes through the startup procedure and
then sometimes loads to program 1, other times P80 (flashes), 240
and so on. If it does happen to laod to program 1 as soon as I grab
the dial and turn it to ascend to 2,3 and so on it does this
computer code thing, says "I need a PPC" on P3 and then proceeds to
reboot? If I do a factory reset all is well until I change
parameters on any program then as soon as I shut it off and turn
back on again the same routine starts all over again. This is
actually my second 2101, I stupidly sold off my first one for a POD
Pro....Yea I know what the hell was I thinking!!!

If any if you folks could offer some advice as to where to proceed
from here I would greatly appreciate it. I haven't let the seller
know as of yet because I wanted advice first and then I would
proceed with either him or UPS for damage to the unit....

Thanks in advance,
Sincerely,
Kevin Schertell

Here's my suggestions:

1. Try a power-up factory reset:
  1.. Power off your 2101
2.. Hold the function (access) key [1] while powering on your 2101
3.. Wait until the asterisk * appears in the top-left corner of the
display
4.. Release the function key [1]
5.. Press the Program Up button to complete the Factory Reset
2. Take the lid of your unit and make sure the EPROMs are firmly seated:
1.. Power down your GSP-2101 and DISCONNECT THE POWER CABLE.
2.. Make sure you have DISCONNECTED the power cable.
  3.. Using a #2 PoziDrive screwdriver, remove the 6 side-panel screws and
the rear-panel top center screw.
4.. Using a 7/16 inch hex key, remove the front-panel top center hex bolt.
  5.. Remove the lid.
6.. Locate the EPROMs U79 and U81. Note that each EPROM has a notch at
one end, towards the front panel of the GSP-2101.
7.. Gently apply downward pressure on each EPROM, making sure that all
legs are correctly seating in their holes without bending. Apply a slight
rocking motion if necessary.
  8.. Re-attach the lid to the GSP-2101.
  9.. Re-connect the power cable.
3. Use some MIDI software to perform a system dump and send the dump to me.
If you don't have any software, I can send you a PC program for free. EMail
this dump to me so I can analyse it to see what the problem is.

Graham Pearson

Re: My New 2101

Hey Graham,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have successfully performed the power
reset doing steps 1-5. That works fine. I can also hold the utility
button in when powering up and can access the reload all algorithms
and midi functionality. I will check the eproms like you said, I
didn't think about that. As far as a program goes I have never
attempted anything like that before so if you could email the system
dump program and tell me what I need to do to perform and what
cables? I need to have. I really appreciate it. Is it possible that
the 3.00 a chips are bad or worse the board is bad? Or do you guys
see this thing all the time?

Thanks again,
Kevin

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: My New 2101

2004-04-16 by Graham Pearson

Kevin:

I've had my GSP-2101 since 1994 and I've never had any problems with it,
except for some MIDI problems. About 1997, I upgraded to version 3 and no
problems whatsoever - it cured the MIDI problems.

The following message will have a MIDIWizard.Zip file attached to it and
some instructions. Read the instructions before installing MIDIWizard !!!

There's a lot of help in MIDIWizard. Check out the Help Topics menu items.
The MIDI section has details about what cables you need and, if necessary,
what MIDI interface device you need. If you have a desktop PC with a
gameport, you do not need any hardware, just a cable.

Let me know when you've installed MIDIWizard and tried it out. But check
the seating of your EPROMs first - this may cure all your problems,
especially if your unit has had a rough ride. If necessary, carefully
remove the EPROMS and then reseat them.

Best Regards,
Graham Pearson

I'm not sure if this is the problem but don't forget that little Lithium battery. When that needs to be replaced your GSP will do all sorts of strange shit. Mine lasted around 7 years although I believe they can last up to 10.

If you open up the 2101 make sure that all the screws on the circuit
board are tight. Sometimes the come loose and that causes grounding
problems.
Good luck.

There's a good chance that the patches in your 2101 were "created" when it had a 2nd PPC-210 installed. The seller may have pulled the PPC-210 and sold it separately (seen them go for $400 on ebay recently).

What's happening now is when you scroll through the patches and it hits a patch that requires dual PPC's and it throws an error.

This is similar to the problems related to upgrading the firmware to 3.00 Artist. Often the older patches are not fully compatible with the new firmware (even though the upgraded unit. is a version 2.0+ which are supposed to be compatible patch wise). I mod/fix/upgrade a ton of 2101 (amongst other units) as a hobby. I've got 3 2101's and a bunch of C1's sitting around right now...

it sounds like the other owner pulled the 2nd ppc out
and didn't do a master reset.

try that.

All,
You folks are awesome coming to the rescue so quick. I will do the
following today when I get home. First off buy a new lithium battery
and change that. Next will attempt to reseat the EProms or at least
make sure they are well seated. I will try to do a Master Reset? is
that different from the Button 1 power on deal? or through the
utility function? I will then read the instructions of the midi
wizard software that Graham will send me, get the appropriate
cables, etc. email the dump and cross my fingers. Anything else I'm
leaving out?

Thank you all so very much for all the help!!! I really want to keep
this unit because I got such a great deal on it. And besides it
sounds so much better than a POD Pro.

Kevin

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: My New 2101

Kevin:

The master reset the other guys are referring to is the reset you have
already tried. So, although it sounds like the previous owner yanked out
the PPC-210 card, you've already done the reset that should have gotten rid
of all the warning message you are now seeing.

Don't forget to make sure all screws securing the mother board are tight, as
suggested by good old Mark Boyer.

I sent you the software already - if you don't have it by now, let me know.

Graham Pearson

Hi,

I've been reading your gsp2101 saga from the sidelines. If I may offer you
some advice - if a master reset didn't do the trick, I would stop right
there, contact the seller, let him know he sent you a malfunctioning
machine, and arrange for a refund. While it's true you -might- find the
cause of the problem by opening up the unit and poking around, it's also
true that you may ruin your chances of ever getting your money back if you
-don't- find the problem. If I were the seller and found out you had opened
the unit, I would not give you your money back.

There are lots of good and reasonably priced 2101s on the used market.
Don't settle for junk.

Anyway, my $.02 from having been in your shoes once and learning the hard
way. Best of luck.

Dude I'm telling you it's more than likely the freaking battery. The same one your PC has. You know that button battery about the size of a quarter? They are less than two bucks. Replace the battery and do a factory reset. At the worst you'll be out $1.50. I can guarentee you that any 2101 that you get will need a new battery by now even if it sat in the original box opened, unless it has been changed in the last couple years. A lithium battery has a shelf life of around 10 years...do the math.

Hi Kevin:

I was looking through some old email messages this evening and came across
your message of about two months ago.

Did you ever get your GSP-2101 up and running?

We just finished a new version of our MIDIWizard software that performs
GSP-2101 System Backup and Restore as well as some other pretty useful
features. If you're interested in a free copy, let me know and I'll send
you one.

Hope you and your GSP-2101 are staying healthy.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
Graham Pearson

Hi Graham,
I saw your post to Kevin, and I would be interested in backup software for my 2101. I'm running windows XP. Can it work with this?
Thanks,

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: My New 2101

2004-06-20 by Graham Pearson

Hi Vick:

The problem could be with your pedal. Is there any way you can try your
pedal with a different processor to see if the problem carries over with the
pedal? I am not aware of a problem with Version 1.03.02 software relating
to pedal input.

By the way, if you're not sure of what software version you have, it is
displayed during the GSP-2101 power-up sequence. Make special note of
whether or not the lower case "a" follows the software version. I suspect
that, in your case, it does not and this means you're running a 10MHz clock
rather than the newer 20MHz clock. If this is the case and you want to
upgrade your software to the latest version 3.00, you'll need to return your
GSP-2101 to the DOD factory in Sandy Utah so they can install the new clock
for you. Unless you live near Dieter Waechter in Germany. He can probably
install the new clock for you in his sleep.

Upgrading your GSP-2101 to Version 3.00 firmware is not a bad idea. You'll
get lots of new features for the price of the two chips. They auction on
eBay regularly for less than $25. Version 3.00 also allows you to use
various software packages available for remotely controlling your GSP-2101
should you be interested in that avenue.

Best Regards,
Graham Pearson

RE: [gsp-2101] Re: My New 2101

2004-06-20 by MM

I had some erratic behavior on a certain patch where I had a flanger
with the lfo depth setting set to zero. For some reason my 2101 doesn't
like this. Even scrolling past this patch would cause the unit to become
inoperable (led's and display showing garbage values, sound corrupt).
Turning the unit on and off would fix it until the offending patch was
accessed again. A factory reset eliminated the problem. Point I'm trying
to make, a corrupt patch(es) might cause the problem. Have you tried to
backup your data and then do a reset? Also to anyone else on the list, I
have a bad master volume pot (one channel 'goes out' or has a lower
volume). I know it's a stereo/dual pot or something from previous posts.
Anyone know where to obtain a replacement, what type it is and how to
put it in?

Thanks

First of all, the firmware upgrade and the 20MHz upgrade are two
separate things. Dieter wrote a detailed procedure for the 20MHz
upgrade. It's one of the files in the other GSP-2101 group:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/GSP2101/

You can find the procedure for the firmware upgrade (2 EPROMs) on
Dieter's website:
http://home.arcor.de/pirat28/sites/gsp2101main.htm

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
