2101 LCD is blank, unit is frozen, not responding to buttons

2101 LCD is blank, unit is frozen, not responding to buttons

2005-08-21 by gruntermoo

I bought my GSP new back in the mid 90's and have never had much of a
problem with it. Several years ago, I replaced the tubes and added a
second disc processor. I believe I am running 2.01.01. I do not have
the "artist version/3.0"

Yesterday, when I turned on the power the following happened:
Initially everything was fine then the lcd started to dim and went
completely blank. I shut off the power and started in back up. The
green lcd screen is blank and the program number is reading 8.8.8.,
the clip is red at 0db, and the input, gain1, eq, level, ovr, byp are
all red, link and edit are not lit. I have tried powering up with the
utility bottom pushed in with no success. Also, I have tried a
factory reset by holding the function 1 button in while powering up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a bad power supply. There are 3 voltage regulator IC's
in the 2101 (on the back side, connected to the heat sink) and very
often one of them will die due to old age. Your symptoms described are
consistent with this problem. If you're competent with a soldering
iron, you can easily replace the component yourself.

We are an independent service facility that handles ADA, Digitech,
Roland, Yamaha, etc, and we'll be happy to do the work for you. We
specialize in 2101's and always have a small stash of loaner 2101's on
hand if you can't be without one while you send yours in for service.

Good luck!

Like everyone else. Same thing happened to me. I work at a TV station so
I had one of our tech guys look at it. He said the Voltage regulatoors in
there were cheap and he replaced it with an industrial strength one. I did
the soldering though. You have to be careful but wasn't that tough to do.

Do you know what part no. to look for the voltage
regulators? And are the 3 the same?

First in order to find out which one is bad you need a volt meter and know
what the voltages are supposed to be at the different points. That's kind
of a hassle and you need a good volt meter to do that. Instead I would
just replace them all (since they are the cheaper variety) and replace them
all with some better ones.
Even the really good ones are fairly cheap. I will try to describe where
they are. Go to this webpage.

http://home.arcor.de/pirat28/sites/gsp2101upgrade.htm

Look at the picture at the top. In the upper left part of the 2101 right
behind the black external heat sync.. You'll see a silver bar with two
black screws there. That's the heat sync that's on top of the voltage
regulators (I'm 95% sure about this. It has been awhile and my 2101 is not
apart). If you take the silver heat sync off you should be able to read
the numbers on the regulators. hope this helps.

And that big brown ugly thing is the transformer. Replace that if your whole
unit dies suddenly (available at digitech's website).

Thanks for all the helpful feedback! It's great to know there are
people out there actively using and knowledgable about the 2101. The
2101 has always been one of my favorite pieces of gear. Special thanks
to Tod Brueske for the helpful info.

One last question. I'm planning on replacing all 3 regulators. Where
is the best place to buy some of the better voltage regulators. I was
able to Google the model numbers on the existing voltage regulators and
found two of them on the internet.

Unfortunately I can't help you there. I used some old high spec regulators
that were laying around. You might consider calling the radio or TV
stations around your area and ask what store around town they go to for
parts if they need to. If it's a good store, you can ask them what a good
high quality regulator is. Again they're relatively cheap so get the
best. At the very least, forget Radio Shack.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: 2101 LCD is blank, unit is frozen, not responding to buttons

2005-10-10 by Nelson Nelson

A couple of months ago a topic about replacing the 3
voltage regulators...

I replaced the 3 voltage regulators and now the unit
powers on but after booting up it starts to flicker
and ultimately the LCD goes blank. Should I also
change the power supply? Any other info would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Nelson
