First of all - it is not allowed to talk about how the list should be runned
on the list...
If you've been around this list for a long time you should know this - and
if you haven't stick around for a couple of months before you start
lecturing others...

This mailinglist has been around for a lot of years and it has been working
very fine.
There are currently over 2000 subscribers to the list.

A lot of people have gotten a lot of help here and there is a lot of people
here that helps out other people just because they are generous enough to do
so.

We have already tried a newsgroup, but the people on it agreed the it was
best to have all the resources on one place - namely here. It has been a
long journey to get the list to where it is at the moment.

Web based list are IMHO the worst.
Internetsurfing is not free everywhere in the world and things take time
with the speed that is currently available around the world.

I'm not dicussing this on the list anymore.
If you want to discuss it anymore - let's take it to the OT-list.

Hi,

Wow, this sounds... dangerous. :-)
You're free to talk about it, but apparently I have been misunderstood last time
I gave my opinion: we've been looking into all possible solutions several times
and everything that a newgroup can do, can be done by a good email client as
well (except for one thing: you have to download all emails while in a newsgroup
that's not necessary). The email system offers many advantages over newsgroups
though!!!

What I meant is this: it's ok to give your opinion about it, but it's useless to
have huge threads about it because it's not going to change anyway. If
newsgroups got better functionality to protect the subscribers from spamming
etc, then we could consider it, but right now email clients still offer more
functionality.

So please no big threads about it... but I'm always interested in opinions so
feel free to email me privately about it (for example, when new technologies
become available, I'd love to be informed about them so we can keep an eye on
all possible alternatives)

> There are currently over 2000 subscribers to the list.

2600 to be precise.

Correct.

Very good idea indeed!!!!

But you can filter on 'Subjects' in an email client just like with a news
reader can't you? I don't see the difference here. The only disadvantage
with newsgroups is that not every provider gives you access to all
newsgroups. And that's not so with email.
Btw, this Onelist mailinglist can be used as a newsgroup; if log on on the
web, you can read a selection of messages just like with newsgroups.

We've already got a kind of newsgroup! We've got the best of both worlds.
It's just that people need to know the possibilities with this mailinglist
at Onelist. Plus, we've got possibilities to search for messages, try that
with a newsreader. We've even got chatrooms, announcement possibilities,
possibilities to how you want to read your mail, possibilities to post
important URLs and storage space. Do you have that with newsgroups?

Hey, this list(the OT one) is pretty silent. So maybe we can get some of the
noise from the LUG over here. Makes things a bit more manageble for those
reading the LUG.

Yeah, and it will continue to grow.

Well, with web based lists you need to have the time to go on the web to
read them. For people who have a constant online connection it's no problem.
But for people who have to dail in it can become quite pricey.
Hope we can discuss this and about the 'Nude Platinum Chick' in here, :-),

Hi,

This is how I read the LUG, of course keep in mind that I have to "moderate"
where necessary and therefore I read it in a strange way:
- first I sort on subject lines: that way I can easily see mails that don't have
a subject line or mails that have the typical "re:digest xxxx" subject line.
Also I read the subject lines to see the threads: if there are threads that
cause problems, I can choose to read them sorted by subject line, or sorted by
thread. When there are things that interest me, then I read them here as well.
- then I sort on sender: it's easy to keep an eye on some senders that way and
to read emails from Emagic people etc.
- then I sort by thread and read the rest. That way I have all mails and replies
to a mail sorted in a nice way and it's easy to scan the mails for offending
stuff as well.

And of course I forgot to mention that all mails with [LUG] in the subject line
are automatically put in a separate folder which I named, well guess... LUG. :-)

All of this is done on a free Netscape 4.71 Win platform.

Indeed! Email guarantees compatibility with everyone, except for two Australian
ISP's that block Onelist because their email servers can't handle the amount of
mail. I'm currently still discussing the options with them (read: trying to make
them upgrade their servers ;-).

> Plus, we've got possibilities to search for messages, try that
> with a newsreader.

Yeah, but this is still a minor point at Onelist: try the search function: it
just doesn't do it for me. Hopefully they'll change that soon. If you keep all
the messages, then of course email clients like Netscape allow you to find any
words in any mail or any folder.

Exactly, but how can we convince them to take it to this list? I've tried, but
didn't manage to make this list succesful yet. with only 100+ subscribers, this
is still a very small list when compared to the LUG (2600+ subscribers)

> Hope we can discuss this and about the 'Nude Platinum Chick' in here, :-),

Indeed... I didn't want to reply to that thread because a friend of mine just
sent me the big Emagic poster with that chick on it. :-))))
