Slightly OT, Pedals? Which one?

Slightly OT, Pedals? Which one?

2001-09-26 by andy@gooboworks.com

Ok, Ok, well so I ordered an 850 Pedal Interface. The next thing I
need is a pedal to go with it. I know nothing about pedals. I
scanned the archives and did not find what I was looking for. I do
have a pedal that came with my Kurzweil SP-88 used for sustain, can
that be used with the 850?

Questions for the list. What pedals are available? Are they
expensive? What are the features of the different pedals? Does
anyone have any opinions on which pedal is good to buy?

Andy

Sustain "pedals" are a switch, and will not work.

This *should* be in archives, but......

Yamaha FC-5
Yamaha FC-7
Yamaha FC-9
Roland EV-5

are all tested and approved. I'm sure there are others. If you find a
different one, let me know. Basically, we are
looking for 'resistive' pedals with a 3-wire (stereo) plug, or a CV Out
pedal (has a battery inside).

Lots available. I have a Peavey CV1 which is good for control-voltage
purposes:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1468179947

Also, check out the Rolls RFX402p which is a stereo expression pedal that
works for control voltages as well ($45 direct from them, less at some
dealers like Guitar Center):

http://www.rolls.com

As far as pedal switches go, the Fatar and Roland are good.  Check eBay;
again, most music stores stock these. Be sure to check if the switch is
normally open or closed.

Roland EV5 pedal $54.95 at Zzounds.com:

There's one on ebay right now for $61! Stay away. :)

Yamaha FC7 pedal $39.95 at Zzounds.com:

Cheers,

You can also use a guitar volume pedal with a custom cable to convert
the stereo phone plug at the 850 end to two mono phone plugs. I use
an Ernie Ball pedal in this way. It has a weird response since it's
an audio taper pot inside the pedal, but it works. I'd only recommend
going this route if you have such a pedal laying around idle.

I will comment on the "usability" of these on the list that I have
experience with. I use exclusively the Yamaha FC-7 but have never actually
seen the other Yamaha pedals. I have also used the Roland EV-5.

If you want a nice long throw the Yamaha FC-7 is excellent. It is fully
rubber coated, quiet and smooth operating. Additionally, the throw angle is
adjustable, optimized for a standing or seated position.

The Roland EV-5 is a more cheaply made and does not feel as substantial
IMHO. However, if you want something with a "short" throw, the EV-5 fits
the bill.

I was playing with the pedal interface, using it for a wah-wah pedal
controlling MOTM filters. I found that the throw on the FC-7 was a little
long and the EV-5 was easier to use in that particular case. But, overall,
I like the FC-7 much better as you have much more accurate control with the
longer throw.

So, who knows the difference in the various Yamaha models?

Do you know about the Big Briar EP-1 Expression Pedal?

How else can you get a Moog for $40?

Re: [motm] Re: Slightly OT, Pedals? Which one?

Well, the pedal interface is "optimized" for 3 different sizes of resistive
pots. 8.5K (Roland EV-5), 50K Yamaha FC-7 and others, and 100 K (generic).
A single jumper on the board selects the appropriate range. So, if the Moog
is one of those three, it will work perfectly. However, if not, you can
change one resistor and still have three selections - the Roland the Yamaha
and something else (the Moog). I have not seen or used the Moog pedal, so I
cannot say anything about it. Does someone know the pot size? The R/T/S
wiring arrangement does not matter. The pedal interface accepts both.

But, really, you cannot expect the Moog pedal to appear on the official
list.... :)

Well, then it will work without any modification. Just dumb luck.
