Just played it back, I haven't done a good job on equalising it, if you dare play it, please make sure the volume is turned down to protect your ears and any passing cats. All dogs shoulld be provided with ear defenders.

Any helpful comments would be appreciated, the E above middle C is particularly troublesome, I can only get it to play reliably with the pinch roller screwed almost all the way down, I'm hoping that a new pinch roller will sort that.

Otherwise I need a new motor controller card and possibly a new motor, the new tape frame is being held hostage by NZ customs, its:

A) Split choir
B) Mark II flute
C) M300a 2 violins

It sounds quite good. As an user of MTron software, I agree that yours
sounds better. I have on one of my tape sets the MKII Strings and I get to
hear them for the first time in 8 days when I pick up my completely restored
M400 #872 at the Mellotron Ranch- Yahoo!!

Mark, it sounds good to me, very smooth. Are you trying to replicate
Woolly's sound via EQ? Do you like the sound of the un-EQ'd strings?

Can you upload a clip of the split choir? I'm mainly curious about the

Strings are 3 violins played on my MK VI.  The tune is Always The Sun
(chorus) by The Stranglers.

3 Violins on the MK VI sound very bright with the tone control at 10.
 (Especially through a good keyboard amp or studio monitor).  I
usually set the tone control at 3 or 4.  I think that the MK VI 3V
tapes are copied from the MK II 3V master tapes, so that will make a
difference too.

Whatever the case, ya gotta press the right keys at the right time or
it will sound like shit.

Mark,
I suspect that you have either a problem with your tone pot or your 
pre-amp.  The tone control on my M400 has a very noticeable effect on 
the sound output.

The tone control on my M400 has a noticeable difference up to about 
11:00, then it doesn't seem to make much difference...or maybe my 
ears are just too shot to tell the difference. I usually set the tone 
control around 8:00-9:00 and I run my amplifier and mixer with the 
tone controls flat.

Hey Mark-
   I had the same problem with my tone control; it had no effect.  I looked for a replacement, but couldn't find the right pot (with a 2-inch shaft) locally.  Using needle-nose pliers, I pried the control apart, and found some built-up gunk on the wiper.  After cleaning, buffing & re-tensioning the wiper, and cleaning the carbon pot surface, I carefully re-assembled it.  It now works fine (so far).
   You have to be careful when prying up the retention tabs on the pot housing.  They may only survive one bending cycle before breaking.  And, not all pots can disassembled to the point of repair.  Sealed pots work better, and mine is not sealed (so it will probably fail again).
    I don't have the info at hand, but I believe the original pot is a 25K ohm audio-taper.  I do remember reading in this forum that some have substituted a 10K pot, and it gave them a bit more control of the tone effect over the full travel of the knob (at the expense of loosing a little of the top-end).  10K pots are easier to find.

(listed as R4) is a 25k Log, not audio taper.  The volume pot (R1) is

log(arithmic) and audio taper are the same thing. I was able to find  
original (in the box and unused) 10k, 15k and 25k pots on line and I bought a  bunch 
of them. The shafts need to be cut to 1". Only the 50k pitch pot is  linear. 
Both Streetly and Markus offer quality replacements if needed as well. I  have 
substituted a 15k pot for volume with no problems whatsoever.

    Perhaps it is a linear taper.  During repair I measured the resistance change as I turned the control, and seem to remember it as acting like a log-taper pot.  Memories are a funny thing, though, and I'm probably wrong.  But, a linear-taper pot might be easier to find in an electronics shop parts bin.

thanks...just a quickie that showed off the tron a bit. 

 It also features the Tacoma papoose, which gets a LOT of use.? I finally realized I prefer small guitars.? I'm on the hunt now for a 3/4 Stella/Harmony. Someone at work has one and I just love it.? They're all over ebay and usually less than 80 bucks.? Small price to pay for a superior sounding guitar.

Not a mandolin, but a Tacoma Papoose, an A-tuned (up a 4th) small body guitar.? It is my current favorite box.? Found it at an antique store in the Poconos for? $100 and it was part of the first years run....handmade!!

Longer Doddy composition...nah.? It smells too much like the lovely Icelandic band (or even the Album Leaf) for a longer version.? It is what it is....

They were named in response to the "sad strings"...sort of.? Those who know me know I'm innately cute and cuddly but like most musicians I am angry on the inside.? It also took me four attempts at recording a new string patch for the tron before I finally got something remotely usable. That exercise is enough to make anyone ill tempered :>)

fritz-? beer is reverb for my angry side, I'm a happy drunk.

Thanks Janet, I was quite pleased with the sound I got there as well (a bit 'boomy', but it's not a million miles from how the 'tron on that track sounds on the first Matching Mole album, I was aiming for a semi-reasonable approximation). 

I know what you mean about the springs though, but then again that'll be the dodgy mic on my phone's camera making them sound 10 times louder!

And yes, I can confirm that they are indeed MkII violins.

I've had the Micro X for a few months and I love it, it's basically an improved X 50 with a 25 note keyboard, I normally use a large midi keyboard to control it. I think it complements the tron quite well.

A little off topic but can anybody recommend an inexpensive midi keyboard with weighted action? Playing synth action keyboards is not helping me with my piano lessons. I have promised my wife this will be my last keyboard purchase but she doesn't believe me.

That's why I like to use Mike Dickson's music. He has yet to threaten legal 
 action. Of course if I ad one single note he will sick the solicitors on 
me, I'm  sure.
 
In this video, I actually do use published music about half way through.  
You tube and Sony have let it go. It is an older tune, though.

Sad person I am, I was on the Genesis-music.com forum for a few years until they recently closed it down. When I first did this a couple of years ago, a number of the guys actually downloaded it to replace the original on their copies of the album, which was pleasing.
I was still a relative youngster when "Duke" was released, and I remember being mortified that TB had ditched the tron completely for that album. There was a tiny bit on ATTWT but barely audible against the rest of the backdrop.
I could actually hear "Heathaze" in my mind as I really wanted it to be. Disappointed, really disappointed in what actually appeared on the LP. So it's been good to now actually hear it in all it's glory! 
Sadoes like me will also notice the added Taurus 1 pedals rumbling away down in the dungeon of the mix, which again was another surprising omission, given that they were still in regular use by the band.
I do, however feel a tad guilty about interfering with history/ distorting someone else's art etc. I feel as though I've decimated someone's grave or something. Stupid I know.
So I wouldn't recommend this form of Mellotron Karaoke as being the norm. Use in extreme emergencies only!

Aw.. C'mon guys...They're my favourite band! ....There, I've said it and I know now that I will be viewed here in the same light as Hitler, Saddam etc by saying such. 
But even those of you really hate everything about them, must concede that at their best, their music has some beautiful moments, their very best seemed to be when Hackett was in the band. But just occasionally, like these two songs from Duke they were capable of tingling the ol spine.
