Failing PSU survey anyone?

Failing PSU survey anyone?

2004-12-28 by [cYcLoThYmIqUe]

From what we can read on this very list or on various forums over the
internet, it seems there's a batch of Command Stations that shipped with
a fragile PSU.

Since IIRC Aaron himself admitted the last produced XX-7 were a bit
flaky (hence the dramatic cut in price one would say), I wonder if we
could start a survey based on serial numbers and country of production,
to ID and track down potentially defective units on the 2nd hand market?

My XL-7 aka model #7750 is as follows:
#040202618 - shipped with OS 1.31 - Made in China - Bought 09/2002

Works okay last time I tried, but maybe it's just luck. :)

Sebastien,

I tried switching to gum but couldn't keep it lit.

I own an xl7 made in China and never had any problem with the power supply. I hope that will continue. Somebody tell me there were a particular attention to cut the current by another feature ( a multi plug with a button on/off will be a got alternative instead of disconnect your device all the time you don't play with ).

Thanks for all your posts and advices.

Presets resetting themselves to 000 0 (png:Transformed)?

2004-12-30 by Chris

Hello,

Today i've exerienced my first Problem with my mp-7.

All of a sudden a few presets of my patterns resetted themselves to
Preset 000 0 (png:Transformed). This mainly happened to the bassdrums of
my songs, but also some other instruments were affected.

Of course it'd be a little annoying (if not impossible) to search
through all presets, to find the right ones again for almost every song.

I currently only have the original ROM installed, so the error couldn't
come from i.e. a missing ROM or so..

Did this happen to someone else before?

cheers Chris

I think it's not a bug but may you have duplicated an original pattern many times. And it's possible you've made a program change in this pattern and so this change is remembered every time tou use this duplicated pattern. You say that happened on your bassdrums ( so on the channel 1 i think ): go to the pattern edit menu and see if there is a program change in the event screen ( on C1A ).
If it's just that, efface this program change and it will works normal.
I haven't other idea , but i hope that will help you.
Happy new year.

2004-12-30 by Chris

thanks for your reply adrien, but that's not the case..

i haven't duplicated any pattern since the last time i used the mp-7
when everything was working correctly.. also this happened to different
channels (sometimes on channel 1, sometimes on ch3, and sometimes even
on multiple channels within the same pattern), so it couldn't have
anything to do with the program change settings

this really appeared out of nowhere.. it was working correctly, i then
shut the mp-7 down, started it again the same evening and everything was
messed up (and nobody else had the keys to my appartment, so there was
no one else messing around with it)

but thanks anyways

Is it possible that you have save a multisetup config on this pattern with preset 000 on this channels and so when you're coming back to this pattern the multi is remembered. The only other cause is that if you 've got the program change set to off on these channel ( in midi menu ).
I can't help you more Chris. But you can try to go to emu website for help.

RE: [xl7] Presets resetting themselves to 000 0 (png:Transformed)?

2004-12-30 by Chris

Thanks again for your reply..

no it has nothing to do with a multisetup and i have never changed the
presets for these channels, that's why it is so strange (as mentioned on
one pattern channel 3 is affected, on another one channel 3 is fine but
channel 6 is affected etc, so i doubt it would be a problem of any
global setting)

fortunately only about 20 of my patterns are affected and for most of
them i managed to find the proper instruments again (and of course i
downloaded the patterns via e-loader right away for backup)

the idea regarding the program change setting to "off" wasn't bad, but
after re-entering the right preset and saving the pattern, it was
working correctly again (at least this single pattern)..

thanks again for your help, but it's more or less ok for now (and i once
again realized how important it is to do backups every once in a while
;))
cheers
Chris

My question is to know if these failures happens when the XX7 are used
in 110V power. Do all the failures that happened happened in countries
where the power is 220V ? Any US user who had similar problem ?
Also the problem seems not related to the china/usa different
manufactures, since reports of made in USA command stations are numerous.
Maybe if we know that 110v is better, we simply have to buy a 220-110v
adaptator.
My 2 cents...

Re: Failing PSU survey anyone?

HI
I run my XL-7 off a 110v step down transformer from 240v here in the
UK.
I ran it for a while on 240v but it did seem to get rather hot..
With no fan in there something will fail eventually in the PSU.
It runs a lot cooler on 110v
I have a Lexicon MPX1 thats the same.. PSU's can fail in those as
well.
Maybe a fan mod (quite one..) is in order :o)
Regards
Gonz

just to let any UK XL/MP/PX owners know, I have now been waiting 12
weeks for a replacement power supply. if I had power that would be
shocking. <ok, its a joke in both senses> - this is truly a useless
situation that emu has left its customers with. thanks for selling
out to creative, emu. in future, I'll stick to roland/yamaha or korg.

I don\ufffdt know if this helps, but maybe you may try to let fix the power
supply. Mine was done (i guess they changed a/some transistor/s) in Buenos
Aires (expensive in electronic matters) for 40$US by a generator supplier.
It tooked about 10 days.

Peace

situation that emu has left its customers with. thanks for selling
out to creative, emu. in future, I'll stick to roland/yamaha or korg.

Re: Failing PSU survey anyone? (running on 110 V)

2007-06-21 by Blaz

I tried running my MP-7 on a converter (transformator that halves the
voltage - 240 to 120, 220 to 110,...) but the case gets hot anyways. I
only measured with my hand, but the temperature seems the same (about
50 degrees Celsius) - that's right under the PSU. I'll see if I can
install a fan somewhere. The Command Stations are definitely not
laptop machines... Maybe in the Arctic ;)

I'm a 240v person, and haven't had a problem with it.

Cooling fan for the command station power supply (PSU)

2007-06-21 by Blaz

I've solved the overheating problem with my MP7: I installed two small
fans on the side of the powersupply (glued them on), so they blow air
through the PSU and outside the holes on the right side (I don't have
the plastic sides on). I soldered them to the power connector (+5V & GND).

Now the temperature at the bottom of the MP7 is about 20 degrees lower :)

It's funny Emu didn't include a fan in the first place, since the
command stations are about on the level of their Ultra samplers - fast
CPU, 128 polyphony, up to 128 Mb of sounds, 2 FX units, PLUS a
sequencer...

Two words: silent operation. =)
