New member needs VZ-1 patch help

New member needs VZ-1 patch help

2005-01-14 by fritzidachl

Hi everyone. It's great to finally find a group of people as crazy
about CZs and VZs as me (since 1980 something!)

I have just bought a VZ-1 (to add to my beautiful CZ101) and I was
wondering how to upload patches to it. I know I sound pretty stupid
but up to now I have always made my own patches on CZs and used a
Kawai seq. The VZ-1 looks MUCH more complicated!

Do I have to set something on the VZ-1 to receive patches or will it
accept them from Cubase automatically? Are there any tricks?

Cheers - I feel as if I have finally found my home :o)

Hi Fritzi,

you have to turn on sysex (Menu3 page4. Exclusive = ENA) and set the VZ in
Receive mode (Menu3 Page2) before sending the patches...

I think that's all...

Back in September [see archives] a few of us talked about
collectively creating a bank of VZ patches. There was also a
discussion of VZ, sysex, and bulk data transfers.

If you get into creating VZ patches, I hope you will consider
sharing them.

PS: I still have some of my VZ patches (designed on the VZ-8m) over
at the spillover site:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZ-VZ-Files/files/

They are in a folder called VZ Users Patch Bank Project (or
something like that).

There are also some VZ patches in the files section of this list...

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/files/VZ%20-%20Sounds/

I moved some of the wallpapers to the CZ/VZ files List, since I found
the patches to be more important...

Re: New member needs VZ-1 patch help

Thanks, I've done that but I just don't know how to get them from my
desktop "into" Cubase. I've tried dragging and dropping etc. but
nothing works. Any idea how I access the desktop files from Cubase?

I also tried to save my VZ-1 voices to Cubase (or so the VZ-1 believes
- "save OK") but Cubase doesn't show the SysX info. I'm probably just
stupid but Cubase is so damned complicated...

Is there a simpler way of transferring patches, avoiding Cubase etc.
altogether?

Thanks again.

When it comes to Cubase, make sure to turn off the sysex filter,
otherwise recording will not work. Depending on the version, this
should be located the MIDI settings as part of the option menue.
After recorded, those sysex data can be exported as midi files from
within Cubase.
To work with sysex files I'd rather recommend to download the MIDI-OX
Software from http://www.midiox.com/

did somebody said vz ;)
fritzi, did you checked out the "VZ Docs" here in the files section?
there are some tutorials about sysex transfer. the archive messages
might help you too. I never did transfer with cubase. Try out
Midi-OX.... i used it, but sometimes had strange problems with it.
Now i have soundquest which works nice - as a libarian too.

cheers

Re: New member needs VZ-1 patch help

Over the years I have used Cakewalk software for sysex. Back in
September (2004) I tried Midi-Ox and that worked, too (if I remember
correctly). I have no experience with Cubase.

As I understand it, Midi-ox is free for non-commercial use. So, if
the terms of the license apply to you, check it out. I thought it
was quite handy (although I am accustomed to handling sysex with
Cakewalk).

Summa, thanks for moving the wallpapers and making space here for
the VZ patches. I am not sure I checked out the ones you posted
before, but I look forward to (re-)hearing them. (Currently, my VZ-
8m is not set up.)

Also, a few months ago someone posted a link to a cool new age disco
[techno?] tune that featured custom VZ percussion and VZ bass
patches. Any chance we can get some of those presets posted here?

yes, i tried sysex transfer with cakewalk too and it worked for me to
send patches to the vz. I would try out midi-ox anyway, since it´s
free (for non commercial use) and i find it also very easy and useful
for other gear.

Indeed, it would be cool when others upload some more patches here..
If i remember we have a patchbank project going on ;) I will maybe
upload some more stuff in a few weeks. Just got a ram-card from ebay,
which was pretty cheap - so i have patch-memory to fill soon ...

Thanks guys (and gals) for all your support. Still can't figure the
hell out of Cubase but I've downloaded Midi-OX and will try it out on
my PC in the office, where my VZ-1 is hidden from my wife - have to
sell the DX7 and XP10 quick now so I can admit I bought the Casio ;)

In any event, all my troubles have encouraged me to download "Power
Play VZ" and program some VZ-1 patches myself. It can't be so much
harder than the CZ101 ... can it? LOL

Have a great weekend!

If you get along with the DX7 you should download my far from ready
VZ tutorial, it'd quite helpfull to translate DX settings to the
VZ...

Re: VZ programming ...

I just read the powerplay guide the first time and found some useful
tips there - like modwheel pan, positional crossfades etc. If someone
would give some other useful tips, this would be nice for me too!

I own my vz10m for 2 years now - so i´m still learning - especially
about programming OP-MEMs. It´s sometimes a bit confusing tho :]
I mostly concentrated my vz programmings on voice synthesis sofar. For
example i like to use velocity for controling envelope times. I wish i
could use the modwheel a bit more for controlling sounds (only have
one on my masterkeys) ...

Phono, Do you still have the full set of presents I e-mailed you?
If so, I tought I gave you voices + op-mems. If I am recalling
correctly, those should help you as models to follow.

Also, below is a copy of a text file I posted on the VZ Patch Bank
Project. I was writing it so people who posted patches (voices and
op-mems) could let users know what special effects the patches used.
Some are Normal Mode effects; some are Op-Mode effects.

If you have my complete voice + Op-mem bank, the text document
should give you examples of what's possible.

Hope this helps.

2004-11-07:

It looks like the plans for a VZ Users bank is either on hold or has
fizzled entirely.
For the time being I will leave my VZ sounds here.

The VZ patches were designed for the Casio VZ line around 1990-1991.
They were placed here as part of a project by members of the CZ-VZ
Yahoo Group
to collaborate on a bank of orinal VZ sounds designed by group
members.

(1) Op-Mems which use these voices will be posted once the entire VZ
User Group bank is defined.
(2) The following table of design features and performance tips is
currently being developed/revised.

design/performance notes:
DESIGN FEATURES:
(1) uses long envelop effect as follows:
----(a) long attack/sustain/decay [so hold the key down]
----(b) long release

(2) uses mod wheel effect as follows:
----(a) amp/timbre loudness/brightness
----(b) tremolo depth

(3) makes special use of global voice parameter as follows:
----(a) Tremolo

PERFORMANCE TIPS:
(40) best played as an arpeggio as follows:
----(a) wide (eg: Perfect 4ths, 5ths, 8ths)
----(b) narrow (eg: close triads)

(41) play mod wheel for accenting beats/for creating rhythm

MODES:
(97) best used in multichannel mode

(98) may be used as Normal or as Op-Mem

(99) used in several Op-Mems as follows:
----(a) Combination: layer
----(b) Combination: keysplit
----(c) combination: layer/keysplit
----(d) combination: all 3 types

=====================================================================
=========
Addendum:

(1) To send single patches into VZ:
----MIDI DATA EXCLUSIVE = ENA [enabled]
----MIDI CHANNEL = 1
----NORMAL

(2) Data will be sent to VZ temporary sound [compare/recall] area.
They will not overwrite presets in memory. (You can leave MEM
PROTECT INTERNAL = ON.)

(3) Comments on the above presets:
----The "Spacey" patches work in normal mode, even though I have Op-
Mem's designed for them.
----My CZ patches are ones I converted (manually) from my custom CZ
patches.
----"Sci-Fi"work in normal mode. They are optimized for the
keyboard's high register.
----I am 99 44/100% sure Toy Piano 1 is my original. (I was
dissatisfied with factory Toy Pianos.)
----IMPORTANT: "PingPong" patches need Op-Mems to get the proper
effects.
-------I will post them once the bank of patches is completed.

Hi! This evening i made some expresive patches and recorded them on
4min mp3. VZ10 only - no edits or fx. It put it at the CZ/VZ-Files!
group for a short time. I was more on the experimental way, while
programming the veezee ...

Steve, i found your OPmem file. Very nice programming. actually it
gives me some good ideas. thanks a lot for sharing. When i remember
buying this tank, there was only those factory patches coming out.
Now, after a little while using it, i have a different view on vz.
complicated synth but worth it programming it! ...have to continue
making my own factory patches now ;)

phono.

I will check out your mp3. Thanks for posting it.

Glad you found the op-mem file. Hope it inspires you to create your
own effects and sounds. I hope the keysplit/modwheel/autopan effects
work on your gear. I seem to recvall that the VZ-8m had some
features that the earlier VZs didn't have. I am not sure if autopan
is in all VZs, but I had fun playing with it.

WOW!!! My kinda sounds!!!!!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!! Very expressive
indeed. Keep them coming. I don't have my VZ-8m set up, but you
sounds inspire me to set it up!

the vz10m does not have autopan, as far i can see. but you can achieve
same results with inverted tremolo on a "stereo combo"

phono.
