CZ101, CZ5000, VZ1, though I hate to admit I haven't used them lately (last
few months).

I have a PG380 and it *used* to function but no longer....

I also have a long-dysfunctional DH1.

And I wish I still had the MT68 I used to have.

Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

2008-08-12 by synergeezer

I have an MG-500 (the oddly-shaped MIDI guitar without the built-in
synth) which died early enough that I could still get the electronics
replaced. I have since learned that the original capacitors are the
usual culprits in the death of Casio MIDI guitars. It shouldn't be
hard to find a technician to replace the caps with functional
equivalents, without a schematic.
Recently, I got a Godin xtSA MIDI guitar. It tracks immensely better
than the Casio, so, I guess technology has improved in the past couple
of decades! My favorite synth to use with it is the Casio VZ-8M, so,
I guess that not everything has improved in the past couple of decades
(see the "music economics" thread ;)
The MG-500 is still an excellent guitar! I love the subtlety of the
whammy bar.

And, with regard to the list of Casios that started this thread -
WOW!! - I don't even know what half of that stuff is!

That's pretty impressive! Here's my list:

HT-6000, MT-68, PT-80, SA-5 (bent), SK-1, SK-8, TB-1 (MIDI switcher thing), VA-10 (currently modifying), VZ-10M, Concertmate 690 (bent)

Formerly owned: SK-5

I think my collection is pretty much complete, though I might like to add a CZ-something, MT-40, MT-60, MT-70, MT-540, PT-30, etc. at some point.

Previous Casios:
CZ-1 (bought second-hand 2000; £70; got stolen 2006)
CPS-101 electronic piano with MIDI (bought second-hand 1988; £100; Freecycled 2006)
CZ-101 (bought new 1986; £150; stopped working 1999)

Interesting (about capacitors being problematic in the Casio MIDI
guitars)!! I have seen alot about the capacitors being the culprit in
causing the infamous Digital Horn (DH) squeal. (I used the DH-100
with the VZ-8M.)

BTW, I am thinking of selling some of my VZ-8Ms. Has anyone seem
prices for them lately? I have't seen any on e-bay in quite a while.
--Steve

PS: Some people sell fixes for the DHs on e-bay. Also, I have seen
fixes posted on the internet. (Try searching Casio DH fix or repair.)
If the guitar problem is indeed a problem with the capacitors,
perhaps the people who fix the horns can help. If the caps can be
identified, it might be good if we can get pix of them in the files
section.

Apologies if this is OT, but a number of Casio CZ/VZ owners also have
Casio non-keyboard controllers. ;-)

It's one capacitor and it's an extremely easy fix. You do not need to
take it to a shop. Anyone can do it with a $5 soldering iron using the
information provided at the sites you mentioned.

SV: [CZsynth] Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

reason why i have som many is that i'm so curious... and of course stupid (not intelligent) reasons like these:

VL-tone1: two of my friends had one each when i had my Yamaha HS-200 in 1983, i have both big and small display versions ;=)
VL-tone5: it looked so cool
M-10: it's used on human league album "dare" from 1981 (second instrument from casio)
PT-20: mum got one for x-mas present in 1984, i got a fucking acoustic guitar
PT-30: improved PT-20
PT-31: a brown PT-30 it's a must have
MT-30: one of the first casiotones, i have the 'walnut' version. creamwhite are more common
MT-31: a MT-40/41 without accompaniment
MT-40: i always wanted a white MT-41
MT-41: my first casio instrument in 1983-84, i have missed it since then
MT-52: unusual drums sounds, cool chord patterns.... one of the best in MT range, white version have an lovely colour scheme, strange colour choice of switches and buttons
MT-55: did'nt like it, one of the later in MT-range
MT-60: rare odd thing
MT-68: best keyboard in the MT-rage
MT-65: you got to have an white MT-68
CT-201: the first casiotone ever made, of course you just have own one. i have the 'rosewood' version, 'velvet black' are also avaible
CT-202: i played it first in 1983 and i remember how cool it sounded (i have 'valnut' version (mint) and the more usual "silver"
CT-401: first casio with accompaniment
CT-403: i have both "velvet black" and "rosewood" versions, big key version of MT-60
CT-405: big key version of MT-65/68
CT-410V: a casio with analog filters..... oh my... a must have of course
CT-501: big key version of MT-70
CT-610: heavy beast, analog drums, typical early electro casio tones
CT-620: plastic lightweight version of CT-610
CT-650: PCM sounds with midi, nice piano patch!
CT-701: biggest 'walnut' casio, odd digital tones(MT-70/CT-501), analog drums.... i'm hunting for a very rare 'velvet black' of CT-701
CT-1000P: programmable sounds of MT-70,CT-501 and CT-701, strange arpeggiator
CT-6000: typical early electro casio sound with midi, rhythm syncs to midiclock and ain't PCM sounding as they say in the brochure, drums sounds very electronic.
CT-7000: it's huge and beautiful, in 1A mint condition
CT-8000: rare and last in CT range, unusual instruments

Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

2008-08-12 by Ian Webster

I have pretty much owned all the casio synths/keyboards in my time, but
currently I have:

CT1000P, CT202(silver), HT6000, GZ-50M, VZ-8M and a WK3000 as
a 'family' keyboard and just for noodling on. I would really like to
add a CZ to my collection (either a 5000 or CZ1) so I scour e-bay for
any bargains

Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

2008-08-13 by synergeezer

Replace the capacitor in your DH-100 (or DH-200). It's pretty easy!
If you don't use a soldering iron, you probably know someone who's
good enough with one to make this fix. My DH-100 and DH-200 both had
the squeal. Here's how:
http://www.btinternet.com/~dorian.rose/

I started playing the CZ-101 in 1984 or 1985 (multi-timbrality [sp?]
was a requirement for me, in those days. So you've got me by at least
3 years! My first synth was the SCI Six-Trak (6-part multi-timbral).

Let me be clear, here. I have not personally experienced the re-cap
fix on the MIDI guitars, but only read about it. When mine broke it
had the entire main board replaced by a local repair shop.

But the DH horns are a real easy fix!

RE: SV: [CZsynth] Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

2008-08-13 by Scott Nordlund

I've found that curiosity can be a bit dangerous where this is concerned. Of course there are many obscure instruments to pique my interest, and I always find myself imagining that they can do something really interesting and exotic. If something ever comes up on ebay, my excitement can get the better of me, and before long I've got another rare but useless thing collecting dust. But then I think that if I didn't buy that Keytek CTS-2000 or Wersi MK-1 (for instance), I'd probably still be kicking myself for missing out on the opportunity, even if the excitement wears off relatively quickly.

It could be worse I guess, at least the physical bulk is a bigger concern than the money spent. Anyway I'd like to think that I'm done with that sort of thing for now (unless I find a Breakaway Vocalizer 1000 or Seiko DS-whatever, of course).

Got any samples (or in-depth technical description) of the CT-701/6000/7000/8000 so that I don't have to want one anymore?

Subject: SV: [CZsynth] Re: our casio instruments, as well as others

reason why i have som many is that i'm so curious... and of course stupid (not intelligent) reasons like these:

2008-08-14 by synergeezer

I'm not very good as a keyboard player. But I'm much better on MIDI
guitar, Akai EVI, Akai EWI, and Casio MIDI Horns.
One technique I use on keyboards is to use a VL-1, or VL-5, and this:
http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/~araki/amazingmidi/
It converts wav files to MIDI files. I program a sequence into the VL
(with its meager sounds), and play it back with the step sequences
through "Amazing MIDI". This software converts .wav files to MIDI,
and flute sounds work best as input for me. I'm drawn to the
interpretation as oboes and English horns, but that's me (maybe
because I can play brass, but not double reeds!).
It's cheating, so sue me! Or find a new way to have fun!
