Casio CZ 3000 & RA3 Ram cartridge

Casio CZ 3000 & RA3 Ram cartridge

2010-09-28 by Michael

Hi all, happy to be part of this discussion group.
I bought the CZ 3000 in 1986, played a couple of times, and kept it under the bed for over two decades! Came across some friends who rekindled my interest and so here i am!
Just wanted to check if it is still possible to buy the RA-3 ram cartridge?
Another silly question: there is a compartment for 3 AA batteries under the keyboard...is this to keep the memory sounds which will be erased when the batteries are removed?
Thanks in advance!

Regards
Mike

The RA-3 shows up from time to time on Ebay - not sure if the batts backup the memory - my CZ230s/1000/101 all have no batteries and seem to hold the memory as long as there is power of some sort - the 1000 which I unplug loses the memory contents and has to be reset. So possibly the batteries help - I think they usually exploit "residual current" which can be from batteries or PSU.

My CZ-1000 has a compartment for a bunch of big D cell batteries.
I think there's a capacitor that will preserve the memory for a short time while you change them.
I remember that the random patches generated when the batteries got low were interesting and sometimes useful. Sometimes they read values different than what you could actually enter from the front panel.

Best,
Nathan

If the 3 batteries don't power the keyboard (I doubt they do) then they must
be to keep the patches. My cz101 can hold patches for a few minutes, but
without a connection to power or batteries in it the patches do get erased.

I've modified mine to hold a single 9v, instead of 6D batteries because it
is just cheaper and is more efficient. I installed a 9v clip inside the
cartridge slot, and it looks pretty professional. I hate hodge podge mods.
I shouldn't run the keyboard on batteries any longer, but I'm fine with
that.

There's a mod to double the patch storage that's pretty easy, and I want to
add a front light on the display. But that's all whenever I find some time.

I concur- when the 1000 starts from scratch- the pitch bend goes out of the normal range - and figures appear in the LCD that are not part of the usual set.
