New Polyevolver user

2005-03-25 by keyboardgod2000

Hi All

I haven't posted before but have lurked for some time.I have just
bought a Polyevolver after having had(and foolishly sold ) a
regular evolver.
I'm wondering if I can hard reset or initialize the unit at all.In
program mode I'm noticing 2 voices being triggered instead of
one at a time with cycling.
I also have a problem with the headphone output.Apart from
being a little noisy it won't go below a certain level. If you turn it
anticlockwise it reaches a point where it just shuts off instead of
fading to nothing.Anyone else experienced this?
Also finally i'd love to hear peoples thoughts on the 2 units.I can
already see that I miss the hands on editing of the evolver and
the happy accidents it produces.I can see myself going back to
the monophonic unit actually.
Anyway happy easter and keep evolving.

I'm also curious -- how do current polyevolver owners work with it?
Do you use a mono evolver as a control unit? Is this a convenient and
seamless way to work, or are there annoyances?

I have a mono evolver, and while I'm salivating over the upcoming
keyboard, the polyevolver rack seems a bit scary with the lack of
controls, even if a mono E were attached...

The Evolver rack ships with an editor software.
I can't imagine to work without it, especially when it comes to editing
the multimode parameters.

Hmmm, I don't use ms-windows on my computer, and I assume that's the
only thing supported. [I usually consider "ships with an editor"
advertised with a synth as a negative point because (1) it very likely
won't work for me, and (2) it means they thought it was necessary...
:-]

Anyone out there use the poly-evolver _without_ the computer editor?

Thanks,

Do you own any 1u rack synths?

Well, it being a RACK and missing more than half the buttons and knobs
than the desktop, it is inherently more difficult to program. This goes
for most any 1u rackmount synths, like Access Virus racks for example.
It's world's different and difficult versus a full desktop version.
Heck, I use the editor with the silgle Evolver version b/c it's quicker
and easier to navigate. Just like I do with the Virus and it's included
editor.

Plus the editor is both mac/pc,

I say the fellow who thought about going backto the regular evolver is
making a big mistake. Having the eight knobs isn't worth it to me. And
if tactile editing is a must, I say save a few more pennies and get the
keys version. Don't go back to single voice evolver just yet, play
with the editor.

I was thinking more of the mono evolver as a controller, not the front
panel of the rack -- should be more or less possible, given that the
evolver can transmit all control movements. What I'm wondering is
whether it's "more" or "less" (e.g., whether having to use the rack's
controls to manage various non-voice-editing tasks completely ruins
the experience or not).

I use linux ... :-)

I rather like the mono evolver's interface -- it's not really the 8
knobs (though they help), it's the way they and the buttons are are
positioned around a large friendly diagram. Very intuitive really.
With a larger display and a nicer shift-key setup I'd be happy as a
clam.

Of course the kb version looks like a dream come true...

Thanks,

Yeh I’ll persevere for a bit. That was an initial impression.I couldn’t believe how much I fiddled with the sequencer on the original Evolver...in front of the TV or whatever....I was very surprised. It wasn’t just the knobs...it was the whole layout....I just liked it.It seems to me that the real essence of the instrument is in the sequencer, not polyphony and playing chords etc.
I can hear much of the original Evolver in the Poly and questioned whether I can do without the extra notes.Question of money too.

Any thoughts on the headphone issue and intializing the unit?

Thanks

A synthesizer that can be edited without software is either very
expensive because of an incredible number of knobs and buttons or it is
outdated ;-)
An up to date synthesizer should have a number of editible parameters
that can't be covered with knobs.

Er, well the mono evolver seems to disprove that ....

It's not really how many knobs you have past some point, it's how you use them.

BTW, I might mention that the evolver sounds you have in the MP3s on
your (Er, I mean Trippler, in case it's not clear) website are really
nice, so that might be "exhibit A" in the case for computer editors
... :-)

Yep, the matrix UI of the mono Evolver is a good compromise.
