Evolver trance sounds?

Evolver trance sounds?

2006-03-26 by jarmo06

Hello everyone,

I haven't still bought the Evolver, I'm between it and Waldorf Micro
Q. Micro Q sounds a bit digital, but still good (been listening to
Manuel Schleis patches). I know Evolver can sound both analog and
digital, and thus has a lot of potential for different sounds. But so
far all the Evolver sound demos I've heard have been electro'ish
beeps, fxs, or nasty distortion sounds (some nice basses though). But
as I'm sure this synth has potential for trance sounds also, I would
love to hear demos. Anyone can help me?

What exactly is a "trance" sound as opposed to electro? I'm not trying to berate, I just want an understanding so I will be better equiped to answer your question.

Think 'smooth' 'thick' and or 'lush'.... perhaps 'sweet' in a way.
Think of a long evolving pad, or (especially) a sound that could play
a melodic arpeggio for a couple of minutes without sounding harsh or
boring. Also trance sounds must usually play well alongside a couple
of other synth sounds in the mix.

In comparison, synth sounds in electro are often more 'harsh' 'punchy'
'bassy' 'riffy' 'squelchy' or used as 'stabs'.

So we are talking pad or soft rythm line vs acid line3 & bass. Well then why yes! It can do that, of course. I'll try to construct a pad and maybe an arp and post a demo somewhere this weekend. So far, I'd say the evolver is pretty much capable of just about everything since it uses subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, and wavetable synthesis.

In the meantime, you have to ask yourself, how much time are you willing to program a particular sound? Will you start from scratch or work off of an existing patch?

I prefer to wipe all presets off of my synth and start from scratch. How do you program?

Hi,
If the micro sounds too digital and you had a chance to check out the evolver as well. That ought to say something. I got the poly keyboard. prior to it's release, I was skeptical as I'm old school and don't care for rack-sizers. I only wish DSI introduced the board version earlier. As to whether it can do trance or electro I feel is just a matter of sculpting your sound. This board has something for all players. depending on your exacting distinction between trance and electro compare the boards in question and go from there. I think you'll appreciate the Poly Evolver and its one of them boards that you keep!!!

Hi

I know Jim etc have said 'Yes' and whilst this is correct, I would not say it is a perfect match; certainly not for all the classic arpeggiated string/lead sounds. This is particularly true if you are considering one of the mono Evolvers.

I think your average Trance track relys on lots of poly and lots of super saw type waves. A very obvious and common choice is the Access Virus.

Having said all of this, the fact that the Evolver synths are not obvious first choices will give your tracks an edge over the competition.

Let us know if you have more questions or if you make a decision..

Thanks to all that have replied!

Yes, Graemes comparison between trance/electro sounds was quite
accurate. I am considering the mono Evolver, with it you're of course
more limited than with Poly. But it still has 4 oscillators and the
digital ones aren't limited to standard waveforms. To answer Jims
questions, I'm willing to program a sound as long as it takes to get
it where I want it ;) If you would be kind enough to make a demo for
me (others can participate too!), to get a better idea of trance
sounds in general you could listen to this soundset for Waldorf
MicroQ, made by Manuel Schleis:

20Trilogy%20vol%201%20-%20Q-MicroQ%20Soundset%20by%20Manuel%20Schleis.

I'm especially interested in plucked kind of sounds (which I believe
the analog filter can do nicely).

This must be the most intelligent/even-handed discussion of trance vs.
electro vs. analog vs. digital vs. virus etc that I've ever seen on
the net. Usually such threads turn to sh*** within 2 or 3 posts. <grin>

Thats because there is almost no point in mentioning the fact that Trance
sucks anymore as it is now so widely accepted. Indeed, if you look up
'sucks' in a dictionary it simply states: see 'Trance'..

Only joking of course.. As we all know, every genre has it's gems. Sure,
slightly more illusive within Trance but the gems are there..

No, I haven't had the pleasure of checking them out. Otherwise I
probably wouldn't be asking for certain kind of sound clips, which was
the reason I joined this group. If I end up buying the Evolver, I'll
contribute with patches and help others when I can. But as I don't
have the change to tweak Evolvers knobs, I would appreciate someone
doing it for me.

The MicroQ sounds a bit too much like a softsynth (which it basically
is). I would like something analog to bring texture to my sounds. For
the price of Evolver, there isn't anything (even nearly) as versatile
with analog oscillators.

Hi,
Regarding your post. I own the Polyevolver keyboard not the rackmount
evolver. I'd be glad upload some samples using the PEK. Same voice architecture
except 3 additional voices plus more knobs and a board. dedicated knobs and keys
make a difference for me. It would be best for a member with an evolver to
upload some clips as per your request. If no one uploads a clip, I'll provide
some. Not much of a home recordist so, without getting too technical let me
know what you want hear and I'll put some patches together in an attempt to
answer your questions.

Well, I would like to hear some "lush" pads (warm, evolving, JD800
style) and thick, rich plucked sounds. And though I'm not much into
supersaw anymore, I would still like to hear if Evolver is cabable of
doing it.

There's some sound examples (too much supersaws though):

My humble Evo Pad offerings are here:

I think they're "lush"... :D

Yeah. I'm aware of this.

I mean.

Yes ;) Though I have been a bit misleading with my posts. I'm more
into progressive than melodic trance. If I was strictly after
supersaws then I wouldn't be thinking about Evolver. But as I really
like plucked sounds, I think Evolver can do those nicely. Not raw
electro'ish pluck sounds, but thick trancey pluck sounds (damn it's
hard to describe a sound).

That would be highly appreciated. The key word here is "thick", in
contrast to raw oscillator sounds.
