Sequencer Questions

Sequencer Questions

2003-02-04 by rickyannotta <rickyannotta@yahoo.com>

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted sequencer tips
but I have a few specific questions (they are REALLY basic!):

1) My sequencer speed stays the same after I change programs. Use Pgm
Tempo is set to on, how can this happen?

2) When I attempt to use a midi keyboard to program pitch changes
into the sequencer, only note-on is reconized not pitch change. When
I go out of sequencer mode the pitch change is reconized. (i followed
directions on pg. 16 of the manual)

3) Even if I wanted to program a basic melody into the evolver
without a keyboard, where would I start? I don't see where pitch
changes are programmed for each step.

I would love to delve into all the great features in this box, but I
have learn to crawl before I can walk!

  Thanks,
Rick

I'll answer your questions in order below...

1) My sequencer speed stays the same after I change programs. Use Pgm
Tempo is set to on, how can this happen?

>>> If you're switching between patches that have sequences with
different tempos, it *shouldn't* happen. My best guess is that
either a) the sequences you're switching between just happen to have
the same tempo, or b) you need to double check the "Use Program Temp"
setting.

2) When I attempt to use a midi keyboard to program pitch changes
into the sequencer, only note-on is reconized not pitch change. When
I go out of sequencer mode the pitch change is reconized. (i followed
directions on pg. 16 of the manual)

>>> I hesitate to say "never" or "can't", but I really don't think
there's any way to program pitch changes into the sequencer by using
a MIDI keyboard. You have to use the knobs to dial in the desired
sequencer step values, whether the sequence is being used to modulate
pitch, filter, waveshape, etc. You may also want to pay attention to
the "Key Off/Xpose" parameter in each patch.

3) Even if I wanted to program a basic melody into the evolver
without a keyboard, where would I start? I don't see where pitch
changes are programmed for each step.

>>> In "normal" mode, you first have to set one or more "Seq Dest"
(in row 8) to control pitch. Then, in "sequence edit mode", simply
select the row for the appropriate sequence track, and twist the
knobs to set the pitch of each step. As I said in my sequencer post
in the EX5Tech Evolver forum, it's handy to have a keyboard synth
nearby as an audible pitch reference.

Re: Sequencer Questions

Thanks ski,

That helps me immensely especially the answer to the 3rd question. I
had a feeling it had something to do with seq destination. But for
question #2, the manual, (i don't have in front of me, i'm at work)
specifically mentions being able to use a midi keyboard to program
the step sequencer and I remember it referred to pitch change as well
as gating.

Thanks again

You can edit while a sequence is playing, but if you save the
sequence will stop.

Yes you can use an external midi keyboard to enter `pitch events' (that is,
note values) into the sequencer (just hold down the sequence key). Maybe the
previous poster was referring to something else.

Thanks for straigtening me out on that one, Miles! You are of course
correct. Pretty embarrassing, and I don't know how I missed that
one! ;) Just another reason to never say "never" or "can't" with a
good synth like the Evolver.

Colin, to answer your other question, each patch has its own sequence
data. It's rather a novel approach, but a very good one... there is
no separation between patches and sequences. You don't have to worry
about "saving sounds wih the sequence", because the sequences are all
stored with the patches!

Here's my take on number 1: Is midi clock internal or external?

I'll answer your questions in order below...

1) My sequencer speed stays the same after I change programs. Use Pgm

2) When I attempt to use a midi keyboard to program pitch changes
into the sequencer, only note-on is reconized not pitch change. When
I go out of sequencer mode the pitch change is reconized. (i followed
directions on pg. 16 of the manual)

>>> I hesitate to say "never" or "can't", but I really don't think
there's any way to program pitch changes into the sequencer by using

select the row for the appropriate sequence track, and twist the
knobs to set the pitch of each step. As I said in my sequencer post
in the EX5Tech Evolver forum, it's handy to have a keyboard synth
