http://www.synthmusic.info/ under "music" under "2003" you will find a track called "Evolving Sequence". The little tune is build out of five Evolver tracks. Isn't this machine awsome? Boele

Yes. Every lushy sound you hear on Oxygene and Enquinox is going through a Smallstone :-) Even the Minipops drummachine. Jarre's technician, Michael Geiss, invented that trick with the phaser. He took a signal (for instance a stringsound), leaded it into the phaser, the he splitted the output signal of the phaser into two paths. One went directly into the mixer, panned fully left, the other went through a delay (completely wet!, about 0,5 to 1 second delay) into the mixer, panned fully right. This gives is very nice swirly filtersweep effect. You should try it. But first buy a Smallstone. The sound of that phaser is too unique to emulate. :-)) > trying to find a phaser that sounds "sweet" on my > tr-606...had a moogfooger for a while but that was > more suited for synthsounds(or guitars)..it sounded > better on bass freqs. As so many times, it is really a matter of experimenting. Regards,Boele

Great track once again Boele, keep it up and you will have to sell

Don't tell Waldorf! :-) Son't forget that the Q+ has 16 excellent analog filters...

No I have that Phaser as an Effect hanging on the mixingdesk. And I use two dedicated channels on the mixer to achieve the Jarre-trick (see the other mail). I use the smallstone a lot, not always very obvious, but it can bring just that little more organic sound into a mix. In this particular case I did NOT use it though :-)

Well, as far as using delays concerned: NEVER sync delays to midi clock. I always make delay-settings with my ears, and they always end up JUST a little different from the midiclock. It brings way more liveness in a sound when the delays drift a little away from the tempo.
Have a nice sleep :-))

Makes sequences sound more complex and interesting. Also, use a highpass filter on the delay effect so that the bass does not get too muddy. Use light amounts of reverb (so that you can't really hear it as reverb) to thicken up a sound or even an entire mix.

Well how about that... another EX5 owner with an Evolver too! :) What's up, Sayer? Good suggestions regarding the sequences and delays, of course. So when are you going to whip out some great tracks using the Evolver, Sayer? I remember you being quite capable of putting together some great electronic music. BTW, if you make some Evolver patches/sequences be sure to post them for the User Forum Sounds set (details in the forum thread at EX5Tech). Way OT here, but what do you think of your new OB12, especially compared to your Virus and your AN1x? The OB-12 is very different sounding than the AN1x or Virus. It has a more relaxed sound with a rather unique character. The interface is absolutely wonderful. I used it to control the MKS-80 (rack version of Roland Juptier) with great results. The OB12 is one of the casualties of my current studio reconfigure, along with the Quasimidi 309, FutureRetro 777, JP-8080 (most likely), and several others. I'm hoping to trade one of those for a Nord Rack 2 and sell the rest. Then I will also have room and money for an Evolver! ;-) Well... that's the plan anyway. Once I do get the Evlover I'll be sure to create and share some patches, although they won't match up to what Boele and Stephan are doing! The EX5R will be with me forever though! Sayer

Details and links for the "Demo Loops" can be found at EX5Tech in the thread titled "DSI Evolver Demo Loops - Now available at Samplelibrary" here: http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi? ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000444 (Note: As usual, if your email client or the Yahoo group splits the link above onto two lines, you may need to copy/paste the link into your browser address bar.) If you have the bandwidth and disk space, I *highly* recommend getting the .WAV versions, rather than the mp3's, for the reasons stated in the forum thread. WRT price... I haven't seen anything lower than $469. For only $30 difference, I'd probably be inclined to order direct from Dave, anyway. Sayer, you already listened to the "Demo Loops"?! Wow, that was fast. Thanks for the kind words. Beta testing... Yes, I had beta unit s/n 0002, but I'd hesitate to say that I was a "beta tester". I got the unit pretty late in the development cycle, and I really just had it for the purpose of cranking out a lot of patches/sequences in a short period of time. I sent Dave a grand total of 140 patches/sequences. Of those 140, about 120 were (and are) used as presets in the shipping production units. I like to call them my "After Midnight" collection, because that's when they were all programmed, after some very long days at work! ;) I have to admit that I have some "stinkers" in there as a result! It was a lot of fun to work with the beta unit, because the Evolver is such an exciting little machine, and because it was an honor to work with Dave. It was also pretty gratifying to see the Evolver get such a great review in Keyboard mag, too (see http://www.keyboardmag.com/r2.htm). Ken Hughes is a pretty respectable reviewer, which made it all the better. However, I was a little disappointed that Ken didn't talk a bit more about the quality of the presets (or lack thereof! ;) ). On the positive side, of the four presets he did mention, two were mine (the Bell patch and preset 13 sequence "Evolver Song"). He was wrong about the Bell using FM, though... it's just some nice subtle modulation of some VS Bell waveforms. Been meaning to email Ken about that one! ;) Mellotron... Wow, I'd love to get a copy of Boele's samples! I don't know if I could do another MEL-LABS, though... geez, that was a project and a half! I guess I shouldn't say anything, though, because the current "S3" project (orchestral strings, wind, & percussion) is nearly as big. The combined EX5/Evolver project with 128 little custom waveforms is a pretty good project, too. Sayer - Your questions answered below... Q. Wow! So how did you get tasked with creating all of those presets? A. I'm a glutton for punishment! ;) No, I loved it, of course. I just wish my job wasn't so demanding, such that I would have had additional time to work on more and better patches/sequences. I was VERY interested in the Evolver when I first read about it, and for a while it was looking like the Evolver might ship with some of it's 386 patch memory slots empty. This probably sounds stupid, but I really didn't want to see that happen. I'm excited about the fact that Dave Smith and Bob Moog and a few others are now making American synths again, and I hope they all remain successful. Anyway, as it is, there are still quite a few presets in the Evolver that are nothing more than slightly tweaked copies of other presets. There are also some patches/sequences that are less than stellar by almost anyone's judgement (and like I said, some of those are mine). Dave has talked about upgrading the factory presets, and I expect that will happen before too long. I'm hoping to get the "User Forum Soundset" rolling again (see http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi? ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000009 ) by making the end of this month the cutoff for submissions. I'd like to see some of our group and forum members' submissions make it into the presets! Q. I've not been to the forum much lately, this is the first I've heard of either project. I'm not sure what you mean by S3. I'm racking my feeble little mind but cannot figure it out. A. "S3" is just the NAME of the EX5 orchestral project. Details are here: http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi? ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000450 Some details on the EX5/Evolver project can be found in various posts in the group here (if you have the patience to search), and on the forums in the following thread: http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi? ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000010 There's also info on a couple of other great little projects by Vincent and Zinoff in that thread. (Note: As always, if your email client or the Yahoo group splits any of the links above onto two lines, you may need to copy/paste the link into your browser address bar.) One last thing regarding the lowest price for an Evolver that we failed to consider in our last post: Dave's price of $499 USD includes shipping. Does your quote of $469 include shipping? Now... go get at least the first set of .WAV versions of the "Demo Loops"! :) I think you'll like the better quality, and the ability to play them looped. Shoot, use them in some of your music if they work for you! Yeah, but the Evolver's actually rather rare in that it has quite a few truly awesome presets -- soooo many great synths come _completely_ filled up with presets that make them sound horrible (and it usually doesn't seem to take more than about 10 minutes of tweaking to make something better). Anyway, I'm grateful for the less-than-stellar ones, as it's always a bit hard to delete a great preset to make room for one of my own lame patches... > Dave has talked about upgrading the factory presets, and I expect that > will happen before too long. Uh-oh, my lame patches are cowering... -miles -- Saa, shall we dance? (from a dance-class advertisement)

Excellent points, Miles. I feel better! ;) You're right, even when I think of only the presets I *didn't* program (so as not to be biased in my judgement), the Evolver really DOES have a very high "gems to junkers" ratio. I think that having a large number of poor presets has killed the popularity and sales of a number of synths, including the OBĀ·12.
