What Host?

What Host?

2001-04-22 by Jules Freeman

The DTXpress includes a PC & Mac host interface. This is based upon RS232 serial technology.
OK, I have no problem with this, I run a Korg X5D that uses a very similar host interface.
However, regarding the DTXpress, Where is the driver?
I am sure that this type of hook up requires a suitable driver, may be there is some new technology
here that I am not accustomed to. But if I am correct, this seems to be Yamaha's best kept secret!
Has anyone got the host interface working, can you help with a driver?

The driver is usually contained in your sequencing software. You should be able to select serial port as one of your MIDI In - Out Devices. If not, you can download Roland's Serial driver from their web site. It should interface with your sequencing software and appear in your Midi mapper under windows.
Good luck

PS - by the way, if you have a sound card, most of them have a built in MIDI interface that is part of the "game controller port". You can get a cable that allows you to attach both standard MIDI cables and a game controller to the port at the same time.

Hi,
Thanks for replying, I have my Korg X5D connected to one of the serial ports but I had to install
the Korg driver before my system could see it as a MIDI interface. I am using Cubase VST 5/32
as my sequencer, but that only shows a list of available ports that are configured for MIDI, i.e the sound
card MPU401 port, the Korg PCIF port. The MPU401 which you mentioned earlier is already in use
by my sampler. It would seem to me that you have come up with a solution in the Roland Driver, I
will try that.
Thanks for taking the time to write to me,
Cheers

Thanks Vivien,
That's exactly what I needed. I cant understand why the

Thanks again.

It's just a badly written manual! Seriously, it would be great to have the manuals available as a searchable .pdf , downloadable from Yamaha (or us). Perhaps midi-savy members could then add simple directions for getting connected. I've toyed with the midi thing but didn't get far due to the lack of real detail in the Yamaha manuals.

Re: [DTXpress] What Host?

2001-04-24 by Jules Freeman

Hi Mark,
Now that I have the driver that Vivien suggested I will be able to get the host
serial interface working. I will try when I have some time in a couple of days and
let you know how it goes.
I have experimented with some home made pads, They work great but the feel is
not as good as the genuine Yammy ones. I reckon that I will easily be able to rig
up a rim pad on the snare pad to produce rim shots! Also the set up cries out for
an extra cymbal pad. I may make this to save cash. When I get it sorted I will email
the details. I am using what I learnt from making triggers for my Roland SPD20, the same
system seems to work fine with the DTXpress.
Catch you later,
Jules Freeman (Ourgate Studios)
