Which kit uses the KP80 Kick Tower

Which kit uses the KP80 Kick Tower

2004-12-01 by zapaxe

I thought the DTXprss kits use a KP60 or KP65? I looked in my manual
and I can't see.
This KP80 has Yahama letters written sideways vertically in the back
and the back is covered all the way from top to bottom, where as my
DTXpree I kit have just the Yamaha logo at the top rear, and the
back is covered only at the top where the Logo is..

I ask because I'm looking at buying a spare.

Thanks, Steve

Sorry for the late response, I just saw this one.

My DTX V1 kit (not a DTXpress) came with a KP80...

Thanks Tom,

I take it that the DTX V1 kit is the kit that came out about the
same time as the DXTpress kits did and had the flat table top style
brain/modules instead of the DTXpress mini rack style modules...?

In either case, I had been looking at this on ebay and was outbid :/

The DTX v1 module/kit is the earliest of the Yamaha e-drum entries.
Its eventual position was intermediate between the DTXpress and the
first DTXtreme, which shared the KP-80 with it. Its module was far
more elaborate than that of the DTXpress, with an interface that was
larger, more elaborate, and easier to use than the DTXpress. Many
thought this module to be the feather in Yamaha's cap--particularly,
the v2.0--all things considered. It was much closer in looks and
features to the first DTXtreme module than to the baby of the bunch.
You see it on ebay now and then for around $200. It can certainly
function as a second module, and arguably as a first despite its age.

Thanks again Ed:)

I had been wondering about those flat table-top modules I've been
seeing on ebay, many of them saying DTX Ver 2. This is good to know.

This was going to be a future question I was planning on
asking..that is if they were better than the DTXpress modules, in
drum samples or otherwise.

Steve,

The technology hasn't changed immensely since the heyday of the DTX
v2.0. Someone on a budget would do well with the module even now; it
puts the DTXPU to shame so far as ergonomics and features are
concerned. But it is limited by its inability to handle the newer
Yamaha three-sound pads, and it is not a great match with all of the
various mesh heads on the market today, though it may be an okay
match for some of them, as I have learned during the last few months.
Pete Corona, who is a terrific drummer and a member here and at DTX,
has been using the v2.0 for years. Only lately, when he's had a mind
to change to different pads, has he run into trouble finding suitable
replacements. If I were looking for a second module to fill in some
gaps, I might well pick up a DTX, but I'd be a little scared to rely
on it now as my main source unless I could be happy a little behind
the times, or the price could compensate for it not being up to
date.

Great to know! Well I don't have any mesh heads or 3 zone heads. I
DO have the DTXpress 3 module which I 'think' accepts a 3 zone snare
yes? I 'may' get a 3 zone head for that some day...?
I 'may' be in the market for additional modules and extra gum rubber
pads (which I'm happy with)for my ever expanding system:)
I have the DTXpress 1 & 3 modules as well as a DM Pro, but it's very
hard to figure the DM Pro out (unlike the DTXpress's), so it's just
sitting in my studio :/ ..If I can't figure it out, I'll sell it off
and search for the Yamaha DTX etc's....

Yes, the DTX V1 and V2 "brains" are the table top style.

I'm not sure, but I think the DTX V1 came out a while before the
DTXpress.

I've had mine since the fall of '98. At the time I got it, it had been
in storage at a local music store for almost a year.

Cool thanks Tom,

Maybe worth looking out for a good deal one for sale used on ebay.
On that note I just bid and won a used KP80 Kick Tower from ebay
today..As a spare of double kick set up...? Hmmm...just realized I
need another kick pedal too!:o

Yeah, I ran into the need for a second kick pedal real quick - but for a
different reason.

I got into a situation where I was using both my acoustic kit and my
electronic kit at different locations. I got real tired of shuttling the
one kick pedal I had back and forth. So I bought a second pedal.

I haven't been able to bring myself to put my Yamaha pedal on the Ludwig
acoustic kit, and the vintage Ludwig Speed King on the Yamaha electronic
kit :-)

How does the double kick pedal sound and work on the DTxpress III. Can you
setup a second kick pedal and pad or is the double beater on the one pad
work ok?

I've had my DTXTIIS for two weeks and *already* am afflicted with
Chronic Spasmodic Upgrade-itis! I'd also love to hear from users who
play a double bass kit regarding equipment, setup, ... anything and
everything. Thx!

For the DTxpress III you have 2 options, one being a lot easier than
the other.

1. Get a double bass pedal. I think just about any standard double
pedal will work. I did run into some problems with the Axis pedals'
beaters being a little too far apart and to the left, but at least
with DW's, Gibraltars and Rogers, all have worked on the KP65. I'm
sure the same is for Yamaha's, Tama's, etc. That's the easy option...

2. Add a second kick pad and pedal. On this one you'll have to swap
input 1 to 9/10 which is explained in the manual. The hard part is
that for some unexplained reason, the kickR voice on every single kit
is set to a cowbell sound (???). This means every single standard
kit you want to use will have to be resaved as a user kit with a bass
sound for kickR. Not impossible, but more work than it's worth to me.

My advice would be to go with the double bass pedal.

If you feel adventurous, then add a pad to input 10 (cymbal or 4th
tom). You will still have to to some pad revoicing for the kits you
want though...

I myself have not yet received the KP80 kick trigger, nor obtained a
2nd kick pedal...My OWN plan is to simply use my 2nd DTXpress module
(or my DM Pro module) for it's kick trigger input. So I'll have one
kick pedal & trigger unit to each module. At this time I don't have
any plans for a dedicated double kick pedal unit.

Just went through this, so here's what I did.

I'm using Axis Longboard Double Pedals. These are the absolute best
pedals I have ever used. However, I ran into a problem trying to fit
them on my KP65 because of how the Axis' are made (offset to the
left). Ed at Drumbalaya hooked me up with a KP120 (real head family)
with a mesh head. It works great. Great response and great feel.
It's 12 inches diameter so the beaters fit comfortably.

Since you have upgrade-itis, let me throw a couple of sticks in the
fire...

I added RHP120 as a second snare to the left of the HH and assigned
some timbale sounds to it. I picked the RHP because it's true 2-
zone. Love it...

Also added a BP-80 bar with percussion sounds.

Finally, added an extra PCY130.

Also, as soon as I figure out where to physically place it, I'm
adding another pedal on the leftover KP65 so I can have an alternate
bass drum sound.

By the way, kudos again to Ed and his staff at Drumbalaya. They
answered every question I had and are truly the best edrum dealers.

I suggest working with two separate KP-65's, rather than one, with a twin. It's too tough getting the pad to pick up both beaters, which are tough to place, with certain pedals.
