Which amp?

Which amp?

2005-03-25 by Mark

What's the latest verdict on a good amp to hook these little beasties up to?
Ideally I'd like something which is compact, capable of reproducing all
frequencies without distortion . . . and last but not least, won't break the bank.
I'd like to use an amplified setup in rehearsal situations and possibly gigs as
well - so it should be able to compete with the usual wall to wall guitar levels
without getting lost. When used with an amp should I have my settings on 'live'
or 'practice' - is there any difference? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Well... a Behringer KX1200 wont break the bank too bad at about $200.00 but
does have some distortion at moderate sound levels and i have heard of a few
failures. I own one and so far I like it, as it's doing it's job. I use it
for practice at home.

I have heard more people say they love the Peavey KB4 than any other amp but
it's also twice the price of the behringer. If you want rock solid
performance get the KB4. If price matters and you not using it to gig but
for home practice and monitoring, maybe give the KX1200 a try.

I'm sure others will recommend other amps also.

My 2 cents........

I've been using headphones and listening to the list discussion on the
amp issue. This
MF ad link came the other day, B stock (refurbed) units going at $150.
The site says
they come with the standard 1-year warranty. Theoretically you aren't
buying at any
greater risk than new products and I am postulating that the B stocks
have actually had
a better going-over than the new ones ;-)

I went for a BX1200 ($150) along with a KX to pair up for extra bottom
end ( as well
as bass practice ). They are out of the BX1200s at the moment but look
like they are
expecting more at the same price. $150 looks good for the KX1200 on
it's own since
other vendors are still asking around $200 new. If you want to pair
them like I plan to,
you can try ordering the BX now at the B-stock price and see if you get one.

For stage, get the larger Peavey keyboard amp. Can't go wrong with Peavey.

I wondering about the he Behringer KX1200 and MusciansFriend (AXL) 60W Keyboard/Bass Amp.

I was thinking of using two MF 60W Amps (right & left channels) versus one Behringer KX1200. It seems like you would get better sound by using Stereo rather than one large mono. Not True?

Any experiences/thoughts would be help. Thanks.

Forgot to add: I can't ever get good sound from my DTX 2.0 by just running out from the left channel, so that's why I'm leary of getting one Amp.

Hello Jerald.

I have the KX1200 myself, and I've had this amp for over a year now. I really
like this amp, as it's loud, solid, and tight. It's a true 3-way amp with a
strong power supply that controls that subwoofer tightly and accurately. I
looked at a 12" Roland amp priced at the same level and found it couldn't handle
the lower frequencies without "bottoming out" (voice coil clanging on the magnet
in the back). The 15" Roland amp I saw didn't seem quite as punchy, even though
at a hgher price. Warning, though - the KX-1200 is a heavy amp for its size to
carry around.

Jerald,

My guess is that the 60W AXL will fail you in the bass frequencies,
at least--especially the transients that toms and kick will send
their way. I haven't seen any specs on the amp, but if it rolls off
too steeply, your lower tones may not sound too convincing. If it
doesn't, they may distort like crazy at high volume. The power rating
is awfully low.

Going stereo is preferable to mono for soundstage purposes, but one
good amp capable of doing justice to the frequency response and
dynamic range of the kit is a much better bet than two that can't
cope. Steph's judgment is trustworthy. She's had her Behringer for
some time. It delivers, and it hasn't broken down. I think that OGD
uses it, too, at least sometimes.

So this week I bought myself a 2nd one so I can play in stereo. It
arrived thursday and what a difference playing in stereo! I would
recomend the KB1200 to any e-drummer or gate opener. As for the 60
watt model beheringer it has lots of pre sets and effects that I
would never use. In short I like my BX1200's You will need a strong
back with These's units Kinda Heavy. LOL Lazz
