Re: MIDI

Re: MIDI

Well, I've tried the MIDI dump to my PC and guess
what?
Nothing.
I did a bulk dump of all the data with a lead hooked
up from the MIDI Out to the PC. This lead works fine
with my Evolution MK-149 master keyboard coz I have a
little MIDI monitor app. that shows all the data
coming in. But with the DTXpress, no data came pouring
in. Maybe it's because it doesn't have the standard
format (y'know Note On, Note Off etc.). Chris, did you
mention that you'd played along to some jazz MIDI
files you'd d/loaded? How did you set it all up?
I think I might need a HOST lead (serial to mini 8-pin
DIN) instead. The manual only reckons you need the
MIDI Out cable for bulk dumps to the Yamaha MDF3 and
doesn't mention using that method for spouting data
out to a PC. Any thoughts?

On the subject of problems - trying Yamaha might be an
idea. Anyone know the tech. support number or email
address? Is it right to contact our friend Dave at
Yamaha?

See ya.

Not sure about your setup, Giles, but I've got my DTXpress wired straight
into the computer. To play with the MIDI files, I just opened my sequencer,
set all of the track outputs to the MIDI out, muted the drum track and
played along. The sequencer sends the data to the GM part of the brain. The
sounds are quite good. If you have other MIDI instruments between the
DTXpress and the computer, that complicates things but it should still be
workable. I believe you can set each instrument to a different transmit and
receive channel number.

Re: MIDI

Well done with the Sysex Manager! I'll start uploading
files soon...

My MIDI setup is simple at the moment. I have one
cable going from MIDI Out to the MIDI/joystick
connector on the soundcard (AWE32). This is fine for
pushing MIDI notes into the PC from my keyboard.
However, connecting this cable on the DTXpress MIDI
Out and hitting drums produces nothing on the
soundcard. I guess I need the PC-HOST connector for
that. It figures that the MIDI Out jack is really only
useful for bulk dumps. Strange...there should be no
reason why you can't just hit pads and get a MIDI Note
On/Off message sent to your soundcard on Ch10 (or
whatever). MIDI In/Out is really all you need. You can
still send Sysex messages thru these. The fact that
there's this "other" PC-HOST socket is annoying. Have
you got one of these, Chris? How do you wire it up? I
understand it should go in the serial or parallel port
on the PC. How do you get MIDI to/from there?

See ya'll

Actually, last week I had a lot of trouble getting the MIDI notes to
trigger. I was close to pulling all of my hair out. It turns out that I
had a MIDI "routing" program running in the background. Instead of trying
to tweak it and get the settings right, I just killed it and got notes to
trigger. I didn't experiment any more than that. Thus, I'm sure you don't
need a special connection. Check to see if that is the case with you. MIDI
software settings can get a little hairy. Just when you think you've done
everything you can, you find one thing you overlooked.

My next hurdle is to figure out how to send the timing data from the
sequencer to the DTXpress so that the click on the DTXpress matches the
sequencer. If anyone gets that one, please post!

MIDI

2001-10-23 by rbaehr@hotmail.com

Hi again all,

OK, so if playing along with CD's is one option, and most of the
songs on the DTX are kinda lame, is a MIDI device the way to go? Like
the MDF3? Is that the way to get good practice material? And since
it also records, it will back up the DTX brain as well. I have to
admit, I know absolutely nothing about this MIDI stuff. I'm trying
to find everything I can to read to learn more about it and how to
utilize it. Are folks here using MIDI devices and feeding it into the
DTX for practice, and using those for recording as well? Can somebody
point me to good reading material on how to utilize one with the
Xpress set?

Any recommendations on devices to consider? The manual suggests (of
course) their MDF3. And are there lots of MIDI files available for
download somewhere to use? My brother-in-law has a JS-5 Jam
station... is there a way to take the pre-recorded tunes off of that
and put it onto a MIDI device like the MDF3? And during playback,
can you mute the drum parts with the DTX like you can with their pre-
recorded songs, or do you have to dump that onto the DTX and save it
as one of the "user" songs before you have that kind of control?

Sorry for all the questions folks. It just seems like it's time to
take the next step with this thing (which might be a MIDI module of
some sort...or am I wrong)?

Thanks in advance for any help/pointers you all can send my way. I'm
off searching the web again for more reading material on the subject.
