bass drum probs

bass drum probs

2008-09-22 by Mitch Kramer

I have a 8 yr old DT Express kit. This problem has been around for many years now and I'm either to ignorant about the settings or something is majorly wrong. I've replace the orignal kick pad with a Roland pad but still having issues. Connections have been changed as well. The problem is that some "hits' are there and some are not. I'm not sure which setting needs tweaking. Any suggestions? I appreciate any advice/help in advance.
Thanks....

This seems to be a common problem, but not one I've had. There was a
thread recently about it here

My own suggestion would be to reduce all rejection setting on the kick
to zero (SelfRej, Rej and SPCRej). You are then likely to get some
double triggering. If it is from the kick on its own (i.e. when you
only play the kick you get extra beats) increase the SelfRej setting.
If it only when you hit a certain pad, e.g. the snare, then use the
SPCRej to reject that a little. If it is generally from any pad, use
the Rej parameter.

Keith.

Keith,
Thanks for the quick reply. The referenced article seems to point to a hardware problem. That may be the case, even though I replace my original kick pad with a roland one. It seems the mesh ones may be the answer. I'll try your suggestions before I go further down the hardware path, though. I appreciate the info and I'll let you know if it worked.

Hi Mitch
I was having this missing beat problem with an osp kick and a yamaha DTX1... I replaced the kick with a pintech one and I don't get that problem anymore! And, the pintech tom's and snare are really nice too!

Mitch,

I think it is a difficult one to track down because I don't think the
same problem applies to everyone. The earlier kick pads (KP55 rather
than KP65 I think) were a bit unreliable anyway. Even the new ones
break down, particularly if you are a heavy kicker. The foam breaks
down, the rubber becomes deformed, the connections break. My reject
settings are SelfrEJ=5, Rej=2 SpcRej=0 and I've never had any problems
but I am not a heavy hitter.

Thanks Keith.... I'll experiment with those settings. I appreciate the help.
