TP65S vs TP100

TP65S vs TP100

2009-10-17 by Jagdeesh Subramanian

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my kit. I recently stopped by a music store and played on the TP100. It was a used kit with the module missing, so on my request they put the TP100 pad on a DTXplorer display model that had the brain. From previous posts, I have realized the red knob won't work on DTXpress 3 or earlier models. And I have a DTxplorer rack and pad system with DTXpress 3 brain, so its not going to be any different in terms of the red know capability for me.

I did feel more comfortable and confident in some ways while playing the snare on the TP100 as compared to the TP65 I currently have. But just curious, in terms of triggers, sensitivity is there any other difference between the two? I also know the rim shot area is separated into 2 equal zones in the TP65S while the breakup in TP100 is more like 1/4, 3/4. I am an amateur drummer so any comments in terms of ease of use is welcome.

Also my intention is buy a TP100 with the clamp so that I can move the snare TP65 pad and instead use it as a ride. Definitely not the ideal arrangement but I will have an extra pad and I don't think there's any space in the lower tom arm of the rack for an additional tom. So can I use the TP65 as a cymbal? I now have the PCY65 as a crash and ride and I can add another crash for sure in the DTXpress 3 brain.

If the performance is questionable in using the TP65 as a cymbal I might invest on a PCY65S, however the PCY130, 35, 55's are pretty expensive even used.

Jags,

You will have no problems using the TP100 on the DTXpress - I have been using one for several years. I use mine on a snare stand, rather than on the rack. Make sure you buy a stand suitable for such a small snare (often a tom stand may be a better bet), although I manage with a cheap snare stand from Thomann. The volume control on the TP100 is useful, even if the red knob won't do anything.

You can use the TP65 for a cymbal with no problem. Again, I did that for a while until I bought some extra cymbals - now it is back to being a tom. In fact the DTXpress comes with a TP65 as a hi-hat as I recall (I never liked that so have always used a PCY65 for the hi-hat).

Keith.

Thanks Keith,

I did surrender to the temptation of ordering a TP100 from ebay over the weekend. Should get it sometime this week. I don't have a snare/tom stand but I will probably visit the thrift store to see if they have one.

I cannot agree with you more on the hi-hat using TP65, it does feel unreal if I can say that. But that has to wait now :(

Personally except for the snare, for my playing capability, all other toms and hi-hat could be single zones. I don't think even in an acoustic set, I have ever consciously used 2 zones on the drum skins while playing them. The ride however yes, using the bell, edge etc is a common thing. So I might get myself a PCY65S soon to support the 2 PCY65 crashes I have else if there is a good deal on a 135 or 130S may go for it. The old TP65 can become an extra pad, although its going to be squished in the rack no matter where I put it.
