Kick Pad problem

Kick Pad problem

2001-12-07 by sorbaduck

Hello all, has anyone had any problems with their kick pad??

I have been having problems with mine. Mine seems to go in and out. I
am not sure if there is a short or what. I am using the KP60 kick pad
that came with the set.

If I end up purchasing a new one, do you have any sugestions on an
upgraded or better model?

Thanks

Tim H.

Yes, the kick pad seems to crap out. I was getting double triggering on mine for a while before it finally died. I would recomend getting a quality trigger like a Pintech.
On a related note, I broke two beaters on the damn KP60. Maybe I was just too hard on the little bugger... ;)

My drummer and I played a gig earlier this year, and it rained... and
rained. His kick pad got wet before we played, and wouldn't work at all.
The next day, I took it apart and found the membrane sensor had gotten
wet. I tried everything to bring it back to life, but wound up buying
another membrane from Yamaha. It's easy to replace, and I think it wound
up around $25 including shipping.

Not much in the kick pad, so it's probably the sensor or a bad
connection on the 1/4" jack.

Good luck.

Hey everybody. I'm new to the group, and will soon be buying my first electronic kit. I'm really starting to lean toward the DTXpress, but all these kick pad problems are starting to freak me out a little. I really don't wanna be in the middle of a gig, and have the thing start acting up. Our Band plays anywhere from 2-5 gigs a week, so reliability is a serious issue here. Dose yamaha make a better kick pad then the KP60? Another question...Are you folks that are having problems having trouble with the older DTXpress kick, or is this happening to the newer upgraded version also? Any info will be put to good use, so thanks in advance.

Re: [DTXpress] Kick Pad problem

Hi Brian (and everyone else),

I do not know if this will help or not, but when I
picked up my kit, the KP60 had been modified. Someone
had removed the polarity switch and gain control,
basically wiring the trigger right to the output jack.
  I can't say that I have noticed any mis-triggers
from it at all, and it responds very well with both
soft and hard hits. Is there a chance that the
mis-triggers are caused by the use of cheap pots and
switches? I haven't missed not having either a
polarity switch or a gain control on the pedal at all.
Any of you electronic types reading this want to
weigh in on this theory?
On your other question on pedals, Yamaha does make an
upgraded version which is a KP80S. I have a Pintech
Vertikik as my other kick pad, and it works well too.

I guess thats the kind of stuff I need to hear before I buy this kit.
Just as a general poll to everybody out there. Of those of you that
already own this kit, How many of you have had problems with the kick
pad, and how long have you owned your DTXpress? I'm not reading about
any other problems with the tom or snare pads, so I'm not as worried
about that. I'm thinking of ordering the kit from my local shop, so
maybe I can just tell the guy to have yamaha ship it to them with the
KP80S instead of the KP60. It would involve an extra charge, but
probably worth it.

Kick Pad Question

2001-12-09 by sorbaduck

I have had my kit for about a year and a half and use it only for
pleasure and stress relief. Everything has been great with the
exception of the kick pad. Maybe I just kick to hard.

I have one additional question regaurding an upgrade. I checked out
the Pintech Vertikik on the internet and it looks pretty cool but, what
about Pintech's CK-V ConcertKik Upright Kick Trigger? Will it work on
the DTxpress??

Thanks again to all who replied you have been very helpfull thus far.

Tim H.

No problems at all with my kick pad, except that the screws on the back need tightening now and then to reduce noise. I've had the kit for about 2 years (I think!). No gigging, but fairly regular use. It's a great setup and easily upgradeable if you need to.

Man, I hate to stop you from buying your kit, but I bought mine in June, and it ;really sometimes isn't worth the grand I spent. Already I had to to send each cymbal pad to the manufacterer, the kick pad just started to not work, and the snare doesn't pick up even eighth notes on some snares sometimes. For gigging, I have never used it. I do play hard, so maybe that might help. I'm Out

2001-12-10 by Philion Brent

I've personally naver had a problem with the
electornics of it.

My kick pad DOES occasianally act up usually i found
its related to the position of the bass drum beater in
relation to thr sensor
my pedal has a habit of letting the beater come loose
and work its way up and since not 100% of the pad is
trigger when i start hearing missed notes its Always
that been the beater position

2001-12-10 by miguel morales

Well...

I have had some problems too. Some times it triggers after a hit (trrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrr). It's not too loud, a soft "trrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrrtrr" like a cat.
I haven't gigged yet so I don\ufffdt know what to do about it.

I recommend you (if you can at your local store) to try to assign in the shop a bass-drum sound to the hi-hat pedal and change of place (place it at your right foot). I tell you this because a friend of mine, who has really big feet can not make quick doubles with a standard pedal (cause his foot doesn't fit) but he can with this pedal. And it makes no noise!!! And if you want double bass drumming (as you can use hi-hat pedal for another bass-drum) it will do feel more confortable if you want the two pedals feel the same. Think about it. If you want spend a little more, buy one for me!!!

I have a tip for Giles (it may be silly...). You can have hi-hat and bass-drum, all in one (Janus pedal, men...). If you assign V1 hi-hat closed and V2 bass drum, when you step soft you make "chik-chik-chik" and when you hit hard you get "bup-bup-bup" and you can do what I have read in modern drummer (step simultaneouslly hi-hat and bass-drum pedal) if you get the "spot" where they sound two at the same time.
Well, it's a shit tip or what (I can play jazz stepping softly and get a double bassdrum pattern to fuck up the song... it's funny)

Also try V1 as some effect (sounding like "beep") for snare drum ghost notes... You can get funny beats!!

Bye

Re: Kick Pad problem

2001-12-11 by hairytrigger

I have owned my DTxpress for a year. I play every weekend, Friday and
Saturday nights. I have had no problems with any thing about my kit.
The kick tower is a little noisy mechanically, but with the on-stage
volume, it is never a problem. It never misses a beat! And I do some
double-bass kind of stuff with just one foot, so it has to track
perfectly. I use a tom pad for ride cymbal, it tracks much better than
the cymbal pads. (Although the cymbal pads work great for crashes.
And I use a pintech concertcast for snare, so I can't comment on the
tp60 for snare. But I love my kit. I beat the hell out of it and it
has never failed me. Even the 'flimsy' rack and clamps have withstood
all the gigs and travel with no breakdowns.....Scott

Man, when I first got my kit that Hihat drove me insane. What you have to do, well this is what I did, is just get used to the hihat. When you play on it for like 10 hours youll get the fell for its ups and downs. Until then, just wait.

He recommended a Roland V kick pad with the mesh head. Any comments about that from anybody? Or is there a cheaper option that works as well. I know that some pintech stuff has been mentioned, but he's not a pintech dealer, and doesn't order from them. On the bright side of things.... I sat down at the music shops older DTXpress, and messed around for about 2 hours..I loved it. It tracked very well, and was pretty sensitive. Didn't seem to track real well at VERY light playing, but if I understand what I've read on here, then that's an adjustment matter?? What about the Hi hat pedal?.... It didn't seem to open and close as well as I'd hoped. Can the pedal be adjusted to operate a little smoother? The kick drum didn't seem to be very loud either. Everything else was loud and clear, but the kick just seemed a little low to me. Again...thats probably an adjustment thing. Anyway... I loved it, and plan on buying the newer model, with a couple of upgrades. Thanks for all the comments folks...It's very helpful to us new people that know nothing about electronic kits.

Re: Kick Pad problem

2001-12-12 by hairytrigger

There are several adjustments for the hihat pedal. One is a mechanical
adjustment at the pedal itself (see booklet that came with pedal)
There is a sensitivity switch on the pedal.
There are several adjustments in the brain itself. Some in the trigger
setup menu and some in the utility menu. A little tweeking should get
you very close to the response you like, but as Plastic said, you have
to get used to it. No matter what you do, it is not the same as
acoustic. After a while, It will be great. Some hh patches don't offer
a full range of open, partly closed, and closed sounds. For the ones
that do, you will need to adjust the decay time to get a realistic
transition between closed and just open. Try a longer decay on the
closed and a shorter decay on the open. The longer the decay on the
open makes a marvelous sustain on the hats, but the first partly open
sound will be too open! The same goes for the closed sound. A short
decay gives a nice 'chick' sound, but won't transition well to partly
open.
As for the kick volume, it probably needs to be turned up. In 'live'
mode(in the utility menu)the click volume turns up the kick. If it is
not in 'live' mode press 'shift' while turning the 'click' volume to
adjust the kick. but the low volume could have been the fault of the
amplifying system. Most headphones don't do the bass justice, and you
need a good amp and speakers to really hear it the way it should be.
There is no substitute for a good amp or PA!!!....Scott

cheaper option that works as well. I know that some pintech stuff has

older DTXpress, and messed around for about 2 hours..I loved it. It
tracked very well, and was pretty sensitive. Didn't seem to track real
well at VERY light playing, but if I understand what I've read on
here, then that's an adjustment matter?? What about the Hi hat
pedal?.... It didn't seem to open and close as well as I'd hoped. Can
the pedal be adjusted to operate a little smoother? The kick drum
didn't seem to be very loud either. Everything else was loud and
clear, but the kick just seemed a little low to me. Again...thats
probably an adjustment thing. Anyway... I loved it, and plan on buying
the newer model, with a couple of upgrades. Thanks for all the
comments folks...It's very helpful to us new people that know nothing
about electronic kits.

Re: Kick Pad problem

2001-12-12 by wgardus

Hi Again Brian,

If your dealer doesn't carry some of the components you want, there
are lots of places that do. The Roland is probably very nice, for
$250 for the V-Custom or $350 for the V-Pro, it should be nice. I
would recommend looking at the options before you spend that much for
your bass trigger. If it turns out to be what you want, then go for
it!

As for the High Hat pedal, the HH60 that comes standard is one of
those pedals that has open closed and somewhere in between, as opposed
to one that has a range between open and closed. I upgraded to its
big brother, the HH80 and haven't missed the HH60 at all. Maybe the
play for you here is to use the HH60 as your bass pedal, then buy an
HH80 to use for your high hat?

If you want to look at other places for prices, Drumbalaya has both
new and used components (www.drumbalaya.com), but not new Roland or
Yamaha stuff. I have found Midwest Percussion very competitive for
new Yamaha components, but haven't looked that closely at their Roland
prices.

Re: [DTXpress] Kick Pad Question

Pretty much all of their stuff should work with the DTXpress. I have the ErgoKick with the inverted beater, and it's awesome.

Thanks for all the help again everybody....I feel like I can go to my drum guy and actually know a little about what I'm looking for. After that last post of mine, I went to musicians friend, and found that roland V kick for around $300...No thanks...LOL. I also checked on the pintech vertikick. It was only $89 I think, and comes with a lifetime replacement deal. I think I heard somebody out there say they had the same thing(can't remember for sure) If so...How has that worked out for you?

Hi Brian,

I'm guilty again, I have a Vertikik and it works great
- despite it not having lead a sheltered life! Walt

Re: Kick Pad problem

2001-12-15 by hairytrigger

Regarding the hihat voices:
The voices for open, closed and all in between are in the brain, not
the pedal. Many of the hihat voices have a range of semi-open sounds
between closed and fully open. Some do not.(the GM voices in
particular.) But the ones that do even with the hh60 pedal you can get
a very realistic hihat response. The trick is in the ratio of
sustain(decay) of the closed to open sounds. You can get a smooth
transition between tightly closed to just open, and then several
phases in between til completely open. The closed sound has to have
slightly more sustain, and the open sound needs to have slightly less
sustain. The only downside is that you don't get as much sustain on a
fully open hihat, like for a crash or swell effect. Its a tradeoff for
the smooth transition. I need the smmoth transition more. Scott
