Drum Set Crash Course

Drum Set Crash Course

2002-02-18 by chitsman

I have received Russ Miller's Drum Set Crash Course for the DTXpress,
installed the drivers and the sequencing software and purchased the
cable to connect my module to my computer. When I play any of the
midi files, non of the drum parts are coming through my module??? I
get piano, synths, etc. but no drums? I have checked every utility
option that I could think of, but nothing.

Has anyone used this book and the accompanying CD? Can you give me
any help? Are there supposed to be any audio tracks on the CD that
play examples of the exercises in the book?

I'm in the dark and getting very frustrated. Any help that you can
offer would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks, Cary H.

i haven't personally used the crash course products you've
described ,but i have had a similar problem when using my module on
my pc. i run into my pc for the general midi voices on the module(for
use with my keyboard),and i know that when i'm doing this this
way ,that i have to push the song button on my module then page over
once, then select over once to the v= ..then i have to make sure it's
on meldy, and not drumv,so you may want to check yours out ,and see if
by switching this setting to drumv, instead of meldy ,and maybe it
would gain you access to the drum voices instead...i'm not sure if
this will solve your problem, but i figured i'd pass on the info..

hope this helps,

Sam-

I apologize. I haven't had an opportunity to test your suggestion
yet. I will try to do it this week. I have a two year old who makes
it hard to explore these options when all he wants to do is play with
Bob the Builder. Also, my computer and DTXpress are not in the same
location.

I'll let you know what happens this week. Thanks for following up!

cool , yeah kids can be a handful at times when you try to do
something other than what they want...i know when my neices and
nephews are all at my house at the same time, they all want to play my
drumkit so i have to use the pull a number out of a hat rorutine so
they all get a fair chance to let loose their chops,my neice is 5
yrs. old and allready is quite the drummer(pretty cool)she prides her
playing on her abilty to keep the timing consistant....

Re: Drum Set Crash Course

2002-02-26 by chitsman

Sam-

I brought my module into where my computer is and hooked up the
serial cable to the To Host port. I tried the setting you suggested
on a user kit (#98), still no sound. I have the swithch on the back
on PC2 because I have the smaller pin connectors. I've installed the
drivers that came with the book CD and the XGLite sequencer software.
I can't figure out how to get any sounds out.

I also have a midi cabel that connects to my PC from the game port.
The cable has midi in and out. Using a different program, Band in a
Box, I can play preprogramed or original songs via midi to my module
and the sounds work fine. I can change drum kits while the general
midi sounds stay consistent.

So... I don't know why I can't get the Drum Set Crash Course CD to
work? Perhaps Warner Bro.s or Yamaha has some support and can help me?

If you have any other ideas let me know. If anyone else has any
experience with this problem, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks Sam and everyone else in the group!

Cary

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Drum Set Crash Course

Chitsman,

I don't have my unit with me at work, however I'm pretty
sure in the utilies menu on the DTXpress there is an option to
switch from GMidi to Navive which I would guess is XG. This might be
worth a try.

Carey,

I've only read a bit about your problem. It would seem
to me that this might relate to drum sounds typically
being assigned to channel 10 (of 16) on most midi
instruments. I could be WAY off base, but if all the
other sounds are being transmitted EXCEPT the drum
sounds, it would be worth investigating.

GOOD LUCK

Here is the latest update.

1. After re-reading the manual, I noticed that it states that the
serial cable can be 1.8 meters (6 feet) max. The cable I've been
trying to use is 10 feet. Perhaps this is the problem with my serial
connection??

2. With my module connected to my computer, via the game port to
midi, and using the MPU410 driver, I can now play the Crash Crouse
midi files with the Yamaha XGLite software. The midi changes the drum
patches and plays other general midi tones for the play-a-long
sections. It sounds very good.

Now my only problem is that my computer is in my office and my
DTXpress is in my garage. So perhaps getting the stand Crash Course
would have been a better decision so that I would have an audio CD to
use through the modules aux in???

I will keep my eyes open for the 6 ft. serial cable for kit dumps,
etc.

Re: Drum Set Crash Course

Leon,

The Drum Set Crash Course is a drum set instructional book that is
authored by Russ Miller and distributed by Warner Bros. It comes in
two versions, one for the usual drummer and it comes with an audio CD
with exercise examples, and the second is designed specifically for
the DTXpress user and it it comes with midi files that you load on
your computer and then play through your DTXpress.

Hope that helps!
