Input 9/10?

Input 9/10?

2002-05-15 by sboehmer

I remember some time back a discussion about the use of the 9/10 input to be
able to trigger 2 seperate sounds. I added a PCY80s and would like to use
the 9/10 inout to set up 2 seperate cymbal sounds on the original PCY60's.

When I plugged in the two cymbals on a stereo Y cable I am still getting the
same sound out of both and it is only registering input 9.

Any suggestions?

Scott,

There is an option on the module to reroute pad 1 to pad 9/10, so where you
would normally use pad 1 for kick, you now have to use pad 9 for kick. If you
look back at the original thread I think I might have given the solution, but
just in case ....

I changed the setting on the module to swap pad 1 and pad 9/10 (you'll find
this under the TRIG section, I think??).
I then plugged the mono kick cable into input 9/10, and the stereo TP80S cable
into input 1.
Then I set up the triggers and voices for input 1 according to my TP80S ....

And that's it.

Since input 1 is stereo (pad 1 + rim 1), you can use your PCY60S in the same
way I set up the TP80S.

If you have any problems setting this up, drop me an email and I'll check the
exact procedure on my system and relate whatever I did, and where you need to
find the settings.

Oops, made a boo-boo in the last email by referring to a PCY60 - I meant PCY80S
:)

You may be on to something there ... the only Y cable I could find at Radio
Shack was a stereo headphone cable. It does not split the signal out to
right and left.

I will try and find a cable that will do what I need. Anyone have
suggestions on where they found a true splitter cable?

As always thanks for the help, I think we all would go crazy trying to
figure this stuff out on our own :)

Hi Scott,

You will not be able to get two sounds from a PCY80s if you use inputs
9/10. The PCY80S has a stereo trigger system, and inputs 9/10 are for
dual trigger pads. Don't feel alone on this topic, as it is one that
we all encounter. For an explaination of the difference read post #
1597 in this group. Walt

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Input 9/10?

2002-05-16 by Brandon Paluzzi

Look for a cable called a "return" cable at any music store. It's used in
with a mixing board to send and return a mono signal to effects processing
gear.

In that application it works something like this:
TIP (and pigtail 1) -> send
RING (and pigtail 2) -> receive
SLEEVE -> ground

For what we need it for, it works like this:
TIP (and pigtail 1) -> Input 9
RING (and pigtail 2) -> Input 10
SLEEVE -> ground

Hope this helps,
Brandon

Let me clarify ... I have a PCY80s plugged into the input 7 or whatever the
crash input number is. What I am trying to do is use the cymbal pads that
came with the kit and have two seperate voices/sounds from the pads.

The PCY80s works great with no real extra configuration on my part.

It is good to be in like company!

Here is another question while every one is being so helpful: What do you
all think of the TP80s dual zone pad? I played one at the music store and it
seemed to me the rim trigger was at the 12:00 position on the pad and hard
to hit for rim shots ect ...

Is there a better dual zone pad?

Re: Input 9/10?

2002-05-17 by okant

I had the very same problem with my DTXV2.
9 and 10 seemed to be linked together and
whenever I'd change the voice using VOICE
menu for 9; 10 was also changing.

I later found out that I needed to change
the assigned note number using TRIGGER menu
and that fixed the problem. Apparently it wasn't
a problem, but just a weird feature :)

I don't know if that applies to DTXpress as well,
but it's worth checking.

Hi Okan,
I also have a DTX 2.0 kit and I'd like to access
the "other" channel in 9/10. Could you "walk me
through" setting this up in the trigger menu? Will I
be able to reassign for all of my kits at once or only
one at a time? I'm using a Hart Dynamics Accupad for
snare drum and a Hart Mondo trigger for bass drum. I'm
currently "wasting" my first tom channel for snare
drum rim sounds, running the head trigger into the
snare channel and the rim trigger into tom 1. What I'd
like to do is run the rim trigger into 9/10 along with
the bass drum and trigger two independent sounds. I'd
like to be able to access ALL of my trigger
channels,if at all possible.
                         Thanks in advance, Brian

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Input 9/10 have the same sounds?

2002-05-25 by Walt

Hi Brain,

I don't know why Yamahga assigned the same MIDI note
to both inputs, but anyway it is not too hard. Before
we start, here's how it works. When you strike a pad,
the signal comes in on a specific input number. In
the trigger settings for that input is (among other
things) a MIDI note number (you can have up to 5 per
input for the mono inputs). Using that MIDI note
number, the brain then scans its voices to see what
sound is assigned to that MIDI note. Then it plays
that sound.

In Trigger edit mode what you need to change (on one
of the other of inputs 9 or 10)is called the MIDI
Note. The MIDI note ( as we said above) is assigned
to a particular voice through the Voice Edit function.
You have to be careful in selecting a MIDI note
number that is not already assigned to another
trigger. In the back of the manual there is a table
that lists the note assignments for each of the
preassigned kits. Since the base for the user kits,
in most cases is a preassigned kit, you can uaually
find what you need. For example, user kit 1 is based
on preassigned kit 33, which ia Acoustic.
Once you've got the MIDI notes fixed in the trigger
menu, then you can go into the Voice edit function and
assign the voice you want for that note number. When
you're in the voice edit function - advance over the
the field that has the pad number in it and change it
to the MIDI note number you assigned to the trigger -
then pick the voice and tweak it parameters. Thats
all there is to it...

Hi Walt,
No biggie on the name, you're the only one who's
ever caught the mis-spelling, I don't even notice it
anymore as I've dealt with it my whole(literate)life.
I used to have stage names like BrianDamage (in my
Heavy Metal/Punk days) and I still use Brian Storm on
occasion. Brian Mantia (of Buckethead,Praxis,and
Primus fame) just goes by "Brain" now.
Thanks a million for going the extra mile in
explaining the solution for my problem. I will work on
this tonite! I have been leaving my module "on"
because the RAM battery is low. I've been waiting for
a used DTXpress module to come in at Drumbalaya, so I
can still play/rehearse while this is being done. I
might be entering the forbidden zone with this one:
Has anyone here attempted or succeeded in replace this
battery themselves?

Briaan,

I've just read this - sorry I rarely check group at weekends - and
noticed Walt already answered this. I'm only writing this to make
sure I haven't 'disregard' you :) In any case, Walt is a much better
resource than me; but still if you have any further questions just
let me know (and I'm sure Walt'll answer much earlier than me).
