Black Lines (not banding) on 3000 - HELP

Black Lines (not banding) on 3000 - HELP

2002-09-28 by ricm95901

One of my 3000s has developed a black striping problem. This
may have been discussed in the past but I did a search and
found nothing.

I'm getting an unevenly spaced, intermittent dark black line that
starts within the image and extends into and beyond the left
border. It's being printed slightly in front of the actual printing
area. The output will be fine for an inch or so and then the
intermittent black line will kick in anywhere from a single line to
an inch or so and then disappear.

Other than the black striping the output is fine as are the nozzle
checks, head alignment, etc. I thought maybe it was a dirty head
so I did an under the head cleaning/blotted the ink pads several
times but it looks as if the lines are sharply defined, linear nozzle
bursts vs. smears.

I'm running Piezo/MIS FS with EAM and PRS and the tension
lever in the + position. It's been fine up until now.

Could this be the beginng of the end for the print head?

Any ideas?

By the way - does anyone know what the black lever on the right
hand side of the print head is?

Thanks,

Rick Murai

Rick,

Is this happening with one particular image, or with everything? There have
been a couple of reports of mystery problems with Piezo that were only
solved by starting over with a fresh scan of the image.

I'm having a similar problem with my 3000. Very fine black lines going the
width of the print. Sometimes they extend past the left or right margin of the
actual image. Under a loupe they are fairly consistent dots, not smears. My
issue is not specific to a certain scan and happens in Piezo or straight printing
from PS7.

I'm afraid it is the printhead or possibly a controller board.

Jason,

This is happening with multiple images.

I thought of a driver reinstall but the more I study the problem the more it
seems like a printer/mechanical problem. Although the lines vary in spacing
they are dead on straight and parallel. The output is fine except for the
lines. And it seems to be getting worse.

Plus my other 3000 works fine with the same cpu/driver/cable.

I really wonder if it may be the death knell for the printhead??

Keith,

Sounds like exactly what I'm getting except my lines extend only into and
beyond the left margins and I'm using OS9.2. I'm thinking that it's a
printer/mechanical problem vs. driver/software corruption.

Have you checked your 3000 in to Epson Service?

Thanks

[Digital BW] Re: Black Lines (not banding) on 3000 - HELP

2002-09-28 by Alan P. Hayes

I've have a very similar problem with my 3000. Fine black or magenta
lines 1/2 inch wider on both sides than the printed area, parallel to
the printhead travel, unevenly spaced. This is from Pshop 6 with the
Epson driver and Epson inks. It only happens when printing at 1440
dpi however. Other settings (microweave Super, specifically) seem not
to affect this.

I'm printing from an older Mac with a G3 upgrade via a serial connection.

Rick,

I'm almost certain that it is a printer/mechanical issue as this same
printer has exhibited the lines from two different Macs. One was a G4
desktop running OS9.1 and PS6 the other a G3 powerbook running OS9.2
and both PS6 and PS7. The only consistency was the printer itself and
the Epson USB to Parallel cable.

I was able to lessen the occurrence of the lines with several
cleaning cycles. But after one 6"x6" print with no lines they have
returned. I'm running the original Piezo inks so I'm not absolutely
sure which jet is causing the problem.

I'm planning on ordering a service manual but does anyone have
recomendations for a service center in the Washington, DC area?

Keith,

Same here.

It's seems that the lines starts about 1/2" into the image and then
sporadically after that. I tried different print sizes and encountered the
same problem. Interesting thing is that the lines continue about a 1/2"
BEYOND the end of the image area.

Please let me know what you discover and (cringe) the repair estimate.

This was a similar problem we experienced with our Epson 3000 at work. After
several calls to Epson and their tech department for assistance to no avail,
we finally sent it in for service. Now it works fines.
