1280 Problem

1280 Problem

2003-03-31 by Thomas Keesling

My 1280 w/ CIS quit working today. I was out of the room at the time, but it
looks like the tubing got caught under the printhead. This is my second CIS
and this hasn't happened since I installed it months ago. It happened a
couple of times with my first CIS, but I never had a problem getting the
printer reset and printing again when it occurred.

This time, after I turn the printer off and back on after a few minutes, it
runs for a second and then the red maintenance light comes on. After going
through this process 4-5 times, I noticed a brass-colored bushing in the
middle of the bar that the printhead rides on. It slides along the bar and
I'm guessing it's part of the printhead assembly.

Does anyone know enough about the 1280 to know if there's anything I can try
in order to get this operational again? Or is it likely that I'll have to
take it in for maintenance? It's out of warranty (over two years old) and
has worked like a champ all along 'til now.

Thanks for any suggestions.

have you looked at www.fixyourownprinter.com ? It's seems chock full
of good information and sale of repair kits and parts. I saw it
recommended somewhere, maybe on Keith Krebs Epson user discussion group.

Can't help with the repair bur I am willing to bet that every time
you print head tripped on the tubing you were printing a relatively
small image or one that allowed the print head to rapidly change
directions. When the print head is making short rapid directional
changes there is an occilation set up in the tubing which can lead
to the "tripping." To avoid this I installed a short piece of mat
board (1-1/2"} extending out towards the left side of the printer on
top of the K cartridge. This modification has eliminated the
problem. The mat board was attached using double sided tape. Good
luck.

Actually, that wasn't the case. The prints were at least 8" wide.
With the original CIS, the tubing was just a little too long and I
solved the problem with a piece of ½" dowel taped to the side of the
black cart. Same effect as you achieved via your solution.

Yesterday, the print again was 8" wide. And the arm wasn't sagging.
I'm not sure why I suddenly had the problem again after so many
months of operations without experiencing it.

1280 Problem

2003-12-20 by Val Brunell

I'm running the 1280 with CIS and Piezotone inks. The lights on the
printer started flashing (red and green alternating) which is
supposed to indicate low ink. Although the Epson software
shows "both carts full", I tried pressing the yellow button to move
the cartrige carrier to the left, thinking I would remove and
reinsert the CIS carts to fool the machine into thinking I was
replacing the carts. The carrier will not move.

Any ideas? Could it just be the yellow button isn't working?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide...Val

1280 Problem

2004-03-15 by Ericka Menchen

I'm printing along just fine with my 1280 and then these weird black
dots show up on the right hand edge of some printouts. Then there got
to be these faint black lines through the middle of the page as well,
and depending on the paper, sometimes random splatters of black.
Anyone experienced this? Do I just need to clean something? I'm using
the standard epson black cartridge right now. I will try to contact
Epson, but I thought since there were so many 1280 users here you
guys might know. Feel free to reply off list if you wish.

Thanks,
Ericka Menchen

Have you tried a different cartridge? The Epson carts seem fairly
bulletproof, but every time I've experienced a problem like this (with
non-Epson carts), it was in the carts not the heads.

Everyone hates to throw away a good cart full of ink but still I'd try
that to see if if solves your problem. If it doesn't, you can still
use the other cart later once you solve the problem. If it does solve
the problem, be happy.

Re: [Digital BW] 1280 Problem

2004-03-15 by Jeff Magidson

Ericka;

Every once in a while I have had this problem.

Somehow once in a while a "blob" of ink drips out of the heads and on
to the rollers inside the printer causing the black dots that you
describe. If you pop the lid on your 1280 and look at the grey rollers
that come in contact with your paper I bet you will see some in
droppings. Also you might notice some ink on the long white nylon part
that holds the rollers in place.

I get out a clean cotton rag and soak a wadded end with Film Cleaner
(other solvents will also work). I then clean away any ink laden areas.
I finish this off by spraying the cleaned area with some canned air.

This procedure has always worked for me!
