Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-20 by Alan Zimmerman

I just started using MIS cartridge inks on Epson 1280. Printer had worked flawlessly with Epson dye based inks previously. Within one day, with the Mis Black cartridge I experienced banding on a grayscale file with Black only, (no gray or quad cartridge on line).. I then did 3 nozzle cleans and banding diminished but still visible with 15x loupe. next print same story. as of this second day, and after 10 nozzle cleanings no relief. Any one have any suggestions?
BTW, the same image file printed on Epson black only cartridge and Epson dye had much less visible banding under 15x loupe.?
Would are COne system Piezzo inks less likely to clog-----

Ugh got a real bad clog on my 1160. CIS Black ink.
Have tried all the usual solutions. Both liquid and mechanical. Cones
tips and tried ammonia and alcohol. Also some strange cleaning fluid
from that company in Las Vegas. Did not work.
I hardly get any ink coming out of that nozzle, the numbers don't even
  print.

I suppose I have to get it serviced.

One last idea was to get an original Epson black cartridge and see if that
ink will open up the nozzles. Does anyone think that is a good idea or are
there some new ideas for cleaning . I have not looked around for cleaning
  ideas since last summer.

I need to start making some new B&W print quadtones. By the way this clog
  is with MIS inks!!!

Hello Alan,

I use an epson 1280 also, and when I get any banding; it appears to
be air bubbles insted of a clogged nozzle. What I do to solve the
problem is to tape over all the vent holes on the top of the
cartridge and use a 60CC syringe to suck out all the ink and foam
that has collected in the chamber. I reuse the ink and foam. The
foam is just ink with air in it, which goes away and return to solid
ink again. Then i refill the cartridge with ink and leave it sitting
overnight. The next day everything works just fine. Try this one
time and I think you will be surprised how quickly the banding goes
away. If you try to print too soon, you may get pooling on the
print; and you may still get pooling if you print at high speed
anyway.

Johnny, thanks for the response, Since I don't refill my own cartridges, guess I'll need to get a syringe then a small bottle to temporarily store. Are you using the inidvidual cart. or the refill system. My cart. came direct from MIS already filled. I'm surprised they would have air build up but I'm willing to try anything.
thanks,

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-21 by jim hayes

My own problems with MIS pre-filled carts was: I only bought one set,
and one of the inks in the color cart ran out when the counter still
read 1/4 full. After that, I vacuum filled my own virgin carts for
half the price (after buying the syringes, kit, etc) and my only
problem was ink pooling every so often on installation- which I solved
by running three cleaning cycles upon installation of a new cart.

I think I still have a pdf on the cart vacuum filling procedure in the
files section of this list (sorry no pix).

I haven't heard of Alan's technique before, but it sounds like an
combo of the recovery method for CFS carts and the bottom fill method
for carts. Anyway, brilliant idea.

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-21 by Johnny Eades

Hello alan,

I bought two virgin cartridges that had never had ink inside and
filled them myself with the syringe and bottles of ink for the
proper chamber. The price comparison is unbelievable. A cartridge
for hextone inksets runs about $30.00 and an 8 ounce bottle of ink
runs $16.00. If each chamber of the six chambers is filled with 7CC
of ink, then an 8 ounce bottle will fill each chamber about 16
times. If you had to purchase a new cartridge when one chamber was
empty then 16 X $30 is $480 and the price for 6 bottles of ink at
$16 is $96 dollars. Which seems reasonable to you and me???

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-21 by Alan Zimmerman

Johnny, thanks again, The math favoring self filling is convincing to say the least.
Since the last emails I have finally gotten a clean nozzle check but still a visible banding on MIS Black only cart. Is there a workflow for Black only, I seem to have seen a proponent of that on line, but can't locate again.
When my quattones arrive, I plan to switch, knowing the quads are superior in smooth tonality. However, in the meantime, I have a print deadline within two days so I will have to find a black only cart workflow. Any suggestions or links would be most appreciated.

I'm having trouble understanding. Each chamber takes 18cc for an 1280,
not 7cc.

When I vacuum filled virgin carts I usually could get up to 6 fills
from a bottle (you have roughly half a carts worth left). Sometimes
you have to be careful with the last fill that it doesn't suck air
when drawing it up.

I don't know if you are suggesting refilling each chamber as it needs
it by pulling cart out, etc. I wouldn't think so, but if you are this
would be false economy as you would have to do a refill using bottom
filling since seal would be broken. And when you bottom fill, the
filter in bottom of cart doesn't get a chance to strain out the big
globs of bad stuff- hence your printhead may clog eventually in that
position.

It could very well be I'm mis-understanding.

Anyway when I went over the math a few times I always came up with
carts costing about $26 (BOTH k + color) when vacuum filled yourself.

The biggest chunk was the virgin carts and the ink. Except for a
dollar or two for misc stuff like paper towels and distilled water for
cleanup, and the rubber balls for plugging top holes, chip replacement
on occasion, etc.

This does not include re-usables like the vacuum fill kit, chip resetters.

The carts from MIS I think were about $54 set then.

Phil, thanks for the lead. this site and interview was helpful but not the one I had seen. It had a workflow listed but now lost.

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-22 by Johnny Eades

Hello Alan,
It's me again. There is a good site to go to for any information on
black only printing. http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

This really makes it simple to get a good idea of what an image
looks like before using up the expensive hextone inks. I followed
the information on the website and printed it out for later
reference. This was during the time I used a Canon S750 printer for
printing my images. It was not a good printer for doing that.

Quick outline of black only printing.
1. Edit>Color settings>check Advanced mode.
2. Gray>Gray Gamma 2.2
3. RGB>Preserve Embedded Profiles CMYK>Preserve embedded Profiles
Gray>Preserve Embedded Profiles
4. Profile Mismatches Check all these
5. Conversion Options Engine>Adobe(ACE) Intent>Perceptual check Use
black Point Compensation and Use Dither (8-bit/channel images)
6. Save this as your default workspace under Adobe Photoshop.
7. After working up your image in RGB assign it the profile of
grayscale and make it a 16 bit image only for printing Black Only.
8. Control-P to bring up print menu. Indicate Black ink only to be
used and not color mode. Use 1440 DPI setting and High Speed. I know
others say do not use High Speed, but I have found that if I don't
use it, I get microbanding in the lighter portions of the image.
True, it may create more foam in the cartridge, but I can suck that
and the ink out and refill will less stress than seeing an image go
down the tubes because of the banding issue.

This is a condensed method of doing it, the detailed version is on
Clayton Jones' Black Only Printing website.

The only reason I use hextone inks is the neutral color to the image
rather than the slightly brown natural carbon pigment color.

Hope this gets you started out OK.

Your friend in Photography

Johnny Eades

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-22 by Johnny Eades

Hello Jim,

I use the cartridge that corresponds to the Epson T008 which on the
sheet with the refill kit says the virgin cartridge hold 10CC
initially and 7CC on refilling. I can't get more than the 7CC in
there even when I suck our all of the ink and foam before refilling.
I might want to look into seeing if I can use the T009 which does
have the capacities you mention below. Thanks for the information.

Johnny,

Okay that unconfuses it somewhat for me. I never knew that the T008
would pop into an 1280. I've had this printer for nearly 1 1/2 years
and all I've been using is T009/T007. Thank you for that tidbit of info.

Hello Jim,

I'm glad you let me know that the T0009 holds much more than the one
I bought from MIS Associates. I think I'll order one of those too
and I won't have to fill so often. You wouldn't believe how much I'm
printing during this learning process.

Johnny

Before you go luaching off to buy carts that you can't use ... and I
hope I'm not teaching anyone to suck eggs here ...

The T009s are designed for the 1270/80/90 printers, whereas the T008s
are for the 870/90 and a few other A4 printers. The T009s won't fit
in a T008 machine - they're much longer.

I don't know if even the T008s will fit snugly in a T009 slot (once
properly fixed down etc) but I wouldn't like to try.

Re: [Digital BW]Epson cartridge MIS black clog won't go away on epson 1280

2003-05-24 by Johnny Eades

Hello K2chttin,

I assumed (incorrectly) that I had an Epson T0008 becaue of the
chart that came with the inkset from MIS Associates. When I filled
the cartridge (virgin) the first time, it took the number of CCs
that matched the amount of the T0008. When I read that the T0009
held so much more; that's what piqued my interest in getting a
larger cartridge capacity. The cartridge I have is not marked in any
way to indicate just what it is. The Epson monitor sees it as a
T0009. I'll leave it at that. I'm using it and it works and I'll
leave well enough alone (for once in my life).
