I've seen a lot of talk of the new Ultratone inks during my occassional
lurking, and am very excited to hear that these inks will soon be available
in pre-filled carts for the 1280!! (I don't print enough or have the
inclination to mess around with filling my own cartridges or using one of
those CFS system things - I'm lazy like that)
During the aforementioned lurking activities, I took mental notes and I
think this is where I am:
1) I should get blacker blacks on matte papers (due to new Eboni ink I
believe)
2) I will have the ability to print on SOME glossy papers, or perhaps just
some semi-gloss papers. The question is: which papers? I've seen posts
about Epson Pro Glossy not being so good, and also perhaps the Premium
Luster. How about Pro Semi-gloss, or other papers that I probably haven't
even heard of?
I find the look of a matte print OK, but there's just something I like more
in a semi-gloss print. Don't know what it is - perhaps it just looks more
like a photograph to me, as opposed to a very nice quality "computer print".
I'm absolutely going to buy some cartridges as soon as they're available,
but would appreciate a general summary from those that have tried these inks
during the experimental phase.
Thanks!
Matthew

Aren't 1280 and 1270 carts the same thing? Regards, David

This will not be the case with the Eboni. You will have to have the Photo Black to print on gloss or semi-gloss. Perhaps the Universal Black may be the one you are thinking about as to being able to print on matte, gloss and semi-gloss. A good place to start, would be reading the info on the MIS site about which inks are for which surfaces. I believe they also reference papers thet Mr. Roark has tested with the UT's. KeithR

Matthew, >... >1) I should get blacker blacks on matte papers >(due to new Eboni ink I believe) On EEM/EAM Eboni is darker than the older VM black. Eboni is a pure pigment ink, so it will not reach the depths of the dye or hybrid inks, but it is extremely stable and black enough for me. >2) I will have the ability to print on SOME glossy papers, or perhaps just >some semi-gloss papers. The question is: which papers? ... I don't think any of the RC papers are perfect or even where I'd want to use them for most of my printing. However, like the Epson UltraChrome inks, the MIS Ultra-Tone B&W inks will adhere to the RC surfaces. I don't think either inkset does as well on RC papers as the dye inksets. There are artifacts of one sort or another on almost all of the papers. Usually one can see some "bronzing" or other reflective artifact. I've seen some slight dusting on a few papers with the UT inkset. The only paper that I've seen that doesn't seem to have any artifacts is the Epson Glossy Photo Paper (which I bought at Costco). However, with this paper the dmax is a modest 1.8. Better than matte papers, but not up to the 2.0+ that some papers can get. I found the Ilford Smooth Pearl to be one of the better papers so far, and it's not as expensive as many of the supposedly top tier RC papers. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com

Is anyone here using this combination, especially with Mediastreet's version of Ultrachrome inks? I would appreciate any comments (problems, pro's or cons, etc) from users or directions where I can look. I have not seen anything mentioned here, but maybe I missed it. Murray Z.
