QTR, GIMP-PRINT resolution

QTR, GIMP-PRINT resolution

2003-10-31 by ejohn182002

does anyone out there familiar with GIMP-PRINT know when the resolution issues will
be corrected? when printing to a 2200 with a resolution higher than 1440X720 GIMP/
QTR floods the page with ink. my problem lies in that printing 1440x720 sometimes
reveals a slight horizontal banding, its not awful but its there, and its worse on some
papers than others. when i print color i find that the slight banding, if any, is always
cured printing 2880x1440. i also like the added detail of 2880, its subtle but
noticeable. any thoughts or info?
thanks

John,

I made some QTR profiles for printing at high resolution (2880x1440)
with the 2200 using the MIS Ultratones. Ink limits had to be cut way
back to avoid the flooding problem, but they do give very smooth prints
without artifacts. Major problem is that printing is extremely slow,
so I don't use them. Now that the dot size weighting has been adjusted
for the 2200 I find that 1440x720 HQ gives equally smooth prints at
higher printing speed and also no banding or other artifacts.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR, GIMP-PRINT resolution

Carl

Thanks, I actually ordered the UT grey carts a couple
days ago, my thinking is to use those in conjunction
with Epson black and the UC colors for any toning. I
figure the more OEM I can use, the less chance for
problems and the less cartridges to change out. I
print a lot of color too so that is a mild concern.
Here is my question: I use QTR version 2 beta 8, is
that the one with the dot weighing corrections or is
it something you integrated into your curves? I was
thinking I would use your curves as a starting place
to tune and linearize my printer and paper combo if
that's where the dot weighing comes in. I am still
kinda sussing out QTR so pardon me if this sounds
stupid.

(By the way I used your basic EEM OEM curves last
night on the Entrada Natural 300 paper and the Premier
Fine Art paper just to get an idea of what these
papers offered and I got very promising results. The
Entrada is nice but the Premier looks great. I see no
reason for people to buy a RIP when QTR works this
well with OEM ink.)

Thanks

Ultratone, OEM ink switching on 2200

2003-10-31 by John Merrill

Are there problems switching back and forth between MIS Ultratones and
Epson OEMs on the 2200? Sorry if this has been asked before...

John,

The dot size weighting adjustment for the 2200 required a patch and I
don't know if this patch has been applied to the QTR version currently
on Roy's download page. Perhaps Roy can clarify this point. The matte
paper profiles on my filesharing site are for the QTR version without
the dot size weighting adjustment. I've re-linearized the EEM and
Premier profiles for the QTR version with the dot size weighting
adjustment, but I haven't uploaded them yet.

Re: [Digital BW] Ultratone, OEM ink switching on 2200

2003-10-31 by Carl Schofield

I've switched twice so far without any major problems. I did have some
bad nozzle checks the first time that I think were caused by air in the
carts, but a few cleaning cycles fixed that. Going from OEM color inks
to the UT inks does require printing a few purge prints to get the
yellow ink out of the light gray in that ink position.

The beta8 version is the older version that matches the old profiles.
A new release coordinated with the corresponding new profiles needs to done.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR, GIMP-PRINT resolution

Hi Roy
Any idea when this update might be posted? not trying
to be pushy i guess i'm just excited. now that
ultatone carts for the 2200 are available it opens up
a new world. i also use a 1200 dedicated to black and
white that i am currently getting set up in QTR so
that's gonna take a bit of time. but i am feeling more
and more that my 2200 is going to replace the 1200 as
it simply prints better than the 1200.
Thanks

It's also possible to run the Ultratones using the standard Epson driver
and my modified 1290 curves. I usually print this way, although I have a
working QTR setup, since the Epson driver prints so much faster than
QTR.

Using the Ultratones with the Epson driver requires a different setup of
the ink positions however:

Black position: Eboni Black
Light Black position:	Archival 7600 Light Black
Cyan position: Ultratone Cyan
Light Cyan position:	Ultratone Light Cyan
Magenta position: Ultratone Magenta
Light Magenta position:	Ultratone Light Magenta
Yellow position: Ultratone Yellow

I would return the printer. You shouldn't see any banding at 1440.

Or maybe a manual head cleaning with Windex. It's possible that a nozzle is
squirting at an angle.

hi mark
the printer is fine, its just using QTR in some
configurations has very slight banding. i figured the
problem was either a paper thickness issue, ie maybe i
should have set the letter to envelope rather than
plain paper, or it was an issue with GIMP-PRINT. GP
4.2.5 has known problems printing above 1440X720 so I
thought maybe when it was fixed to print 1440X1440 or
2880X1440 that that might solve the problem as well.
Otherwise my 2200 has been a complete dream.

John,

Were you seeing banding at "1440x720 Highest Quality" or just at the
plain 1440x720 setting? I've been using the 1440x720 Highest Quality
setting with QTR and see no banding. I use the letter paper thickness
setting when printing EEM through the sheet feeder and the envelope
setting for heavier papers via rear feed manual slot.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QTR, GIMP-PRINT resolution

2003-10-31 by john eckenrode

carl
i was using highest quality.
then this morning i had "I coulda had a V8" moment and
realised I had set the paper to the plain setting on
all my tests. looked at my eem/museum digital
art/concord rag samples-no banding, looked at my
premier fine art samples which are on thicker
paper-very slight banding, looked at my entrada
samples, thicker still-most banding. so my paper
setting oversight appears to be the problem.
i hope thats all it was
i am going to make that simple adjustment and recheck
tonight.
