Monitor Calibration

Monitor Calibration

2004-02-24 by Ericka Menchen

I print both b/w and color images, and I'm considering a "spyder" or
similar monitor calibration device. Has anyone had experience with
these devices for b/w printing or have any suggestions?
Thanks,

based on recommendations on this thread, I recently purchased the
Eye-One Display calibration hardware and software from GretagMacBeth.

http://www.i1color.com/products/i1_display.asp

It was easy to install and use, and the results are very good. I have an
el Cheapo LCD monitor and for the life of me I could never get it
calibrated. I actually thought that with my monitor it wasn't going to
be possible to see distinction in each of the steps on the 21 step
grayscale wedge.

After running the Eye-One "Match" software (which comes with the
"Display" package), I am now seeing clear distinction between each step
on the wedge, and my color and B&W images on my monitor look 100 times
"better" (I know.... "better" is a hard word to quantify)...

As an aside.. I don't know which packaging came first, the Apple iPod or
the GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display... but whichever one came second
should be ashamed of itself.

I don't know how much of a recommendation I'm really giving here, but
my friend brought his Monaco Systems thing over and calibrated my
monitor and it came out quite good, especially for b&w. I have to
get him out again to build a "night" profile for me as well. No
matter how dark you think your digital darkroom is, the chances are
that there are differences between day and night. No matter what you
use make sure you make at least two profiles... it will save you a
lot of headaches to do it right away.

Ericka, I use the SpyderPro and it works fine. Easy to use and it showed
that my "visual" calibration was off about a mile. I thought I had a fair
match with the Pantone color formula guide, but it was a cruel joke.
Phosphors and reflected light just don't equate. All told, a very
well-spent $229. I don't have an LCD monitor, except one that I use on
another PC for bizness, but a quick read of the manual indicates a number of
the advanced functions don't work on LCD's. Someone else may be able to
comment more fully on this.

With Simulate Paper White checked BOTH papers will match without changing
white point - if your white point matches the viewing conditions. This is
the whole point of it. You don't change your white point for the paper but
for the viewing condition.

I have a Dell 17 inch flat panal analog monitor. That is what Dell
calls it in my paperwork. Am I correct that this is not LCD? Do I
calibrate this with Huey or Express 2? I want to get the right thing
and get a good calibration. Thanks.

An LCD monitor is only an inch or two thick. The only other monitor
type is a CRT, which is larger.

It is a LCD but not a digital LCD.

I can't speak to the color calibration but if your
monitor is more than a 3" or 4" thick it definitely is
not an LCD.

You may find the model number on the back of the monitor. You could
then look up the specs on the Dell website's support pages.

I also have an older Dell flat panel monitor -- a Model 1704FVP. It is
an LCD. I calibrated it with a Pantone Spyder sensor, which is a very
handy thing to have.

All the best,

It's a LCD but it runs on the VGA analogue signal, not the superior DVI digital signal.
