OT Upgrading OSX->10.3 and printing

OT Upgrading OSX->10.3 and printing

2004-03-18 by px3n120x

I did an upgrade to OSX 10.3 and printing (SP 1280) is broken. What happens is that
when I chose Print I don't have all the options I used to on OSX 10.2, I can't choose
paper, dpi, etc. or QTR. I did a clean install but didn't help. I installed on a firewire
drive but I doubt installing on the Mac's hard drive would make a difference, basically
I want to make sure things work before I mess up with my current setup on the HD.
I'm searching the web for clues, any help would be appreciated.

You need to install the real Epson driver. The driver you are seeing
is a GimpPrint driver installed by Panther. Some people are finding it
necessary to uninstall the GimpPrint drivers by going to the GimpPrint
site, downloading the uninstaller, running it.
Either way you must instal the latest official Epson driver from the
Epson website.
I don't know what Apple was thinking, obviously a deal was made.

Andu,

OS X 10.3 has quite a few print drivers and it's likely you don't have the one
you are used to. I'm not sure which one you really want. The SP 1280 is
the standard Epson driver. In Print Setup Utility when you Add a printer
make sure you use the "EPSON USB" pull down to find that driver. If you are
going to also use QTR you'll need to use <option> Add and the Advanced
pulldown.

Also Epson just released new drivers for both the 1280 and 2200 for OSX.

I tried Epson's new driver for SP 1280 but no improvement. Same with GP, QTR. Here's
what I have in the bottom pull-down menu of the Print dialog:
Copies & pages
Layout
Scheduler
Paper handling
Colorsync
Summary
which looks to me like a generic setup to which each printer adds its particular features.

I'm wondering if these options are part of a config file I can check and/or edit.

I've seen that happen once too. You are right that the set of options you
see is just the generic setup. Its been a while so I don't remember the
exact circumstances, but I think it was a matter of restarting either the
program i.e. Quit and Restart Photoshop or possibly logging out and back in.
Deleting the printer and Re-Adding with no other programs running might
also help.

Happened here too. As well as Roy's suggestions try going to page setup
and selecting it there first, then make sure paper source is right, or
try a different setting. Then go back and try the driver.

Turns out the Print dialog behaves properly if used by other users *but* root s it was a
ownership/permissions problem which couldn't be fixed by available utilities and since I'm
not sure which files are involved I'm not gonna fix it.
