Glossy Paper Heavy Weight

Glossy Paper Heavy Weight

2004-03-20 by Paul Roark

Epson "Glossy Paper Heavy Weight" is a paper that has some interesting
characteristics. It is said to be archival, prints artifact-free (no
bronzing or differential reflect characteristics) with UT7. As such it does
not need spraying. While spraying would protect the surface, the Glossy HW
surface appears to be much tougher than, for example, the Premium Semigloss;
the Glossy HW does not show every little scratch. Glossy HW looks much like
the cheaper Epson Glossy Photo Paper.

At $98 for a 65.5 foot roll it is more expensive than the Premium Semimatte,
which goes for about that same amount for 100 feet at www.Atlex.com
<http://www.atlex.com/> . Neither paper is available in cut sheets.

I'm printing it with the 2200. Using an "Eboni-glossy" curve that allows
the Eboni to stay installed in the printer, I'm getting dmax of 1.9+. To
do this, however, requires the 2200's "color density" driver adjustment.
The 7600 also has such an adjustment. Hopefully the 4000 will also.

(I'm finding the 2200's unique abilities are very helpful. I've found with
both Arches Hot Press, which greatly benefits from the light black, and this
paper, which benefits from the ability to vary the ink load, I could not get
equal quality from my older printers.)

Epson's statements about the product include the following:

"EPSON Glossy Paper Heavyweight is the best media for users requiring a
longer lasting non yellowing print with photographic image quality.
Applications include photographs, promotional pieces, layouts, portfolio
images, proofs, indoor displays and posters."

.

"Non-yellowing coating for long lasting bright whites"

.

"Good Archivability"

At only 190 gsm & 9 mil it is not what I'd call "heavy weight," but it's all
relative. Premium Semigloss is 10 mil.

This roll paper was designed for the 7000 and 9000. Epson does not
recommend it for its pigments, but it appears to work extremely well with
the Ultra Tone pigs. It is one of the papers I'll be fade testing for the
next month of so. It'll be interesting to see how it does compared to
Premium Semigloss and others.

Paul,

Does the Glossy Heavyweight get wavy with heavy ink loads like the
photo paper does?

Carl,

Yes. It will benefit from dry mounting. I think it will end up taking on
some of the texture of the underlying mat board, which may not be so bad.

After further testing with the Abbey acid test pen, I no longer believe this
Epson paper is archival. While the surface is acid-free the interior fibers
do not appear to be. Too bad.

Paul I have been reading the group posting for about six months. What
papers would you suggest for archival printing? I use an Epson 2200 with Image
Print andf a PC. I have use both EEM and Luster, but if they are not archival,
maybe I should use something else.

I wonder why Epson does not recommend either the glossy HW or epson
photo paper for use with pigment inks. These are the only two soft
gloss papers I know of that yield prints without bronzing and gloss
differential artifacts with the UT and UT2 inks. I assume that both of
these papers have cast coated surfaces as opposed to the newer
microporus ceramic coatings that are recommended for pigment inks.
Although the latter technology may improve print longevity the bronzing
these papers exhibit is too distracting.

RE: [Digital BW] Glossy Paper Heavy Weight

Carl,

>gloss papers I know of that yield prints without bronzing and gloss
>differential artifacts with the UT and UT2 inks.

I believe I tested the Epson Glossy Photo paper with Epson UltraChrome Photo
black and got a dmax of only 1.4. This is as opposed to the 1.9 - 2.0 that
I can get with the UT2/7 with the "Eboni-glossy" curves that use the midtone
gray inks. So, I think there may be something about the Epson coated black
pigment that limits the dmax. Note that with the C84 that uses a hybrid
black, Glossy Photo Paper is back on the list of papers.

>I assume that both of

>Although the latter technology may improve print longevity the bronzing

I have both the old and new glossy paper types in the fader now, so we'll
see in a month or so whether the microporous coating aids longevity.

It's strange that the Glossy Paper Heavy Weight interior paper initially
tested neutral and now tests as acidic. What may be going on is that the
alkaline coating kept the whole roll neutral when it was in a roll, but the
paper actually has no buffering in it. So, after being unrolled for a while
the residual lignin turned the paper (not the surface) acidic. This may
also suggest that the paper is thin enough that the non-penetrating
deacidification spray from Preservation Technologies on the back would keep
the lignin in check and make the paper archival. However, unless the paper
does much better in the fade test, I'm not sure I want to bother with more
processing.

Re: [Digital BW] Glossy Paper Heavy Weight

2004-03-24 by Carl Schofield

Paul,

I'm getting a dmax of about 2.1 with the MIS PK and UT1 inkset for the
2200 on Epson Photo paper and a dmax of about 1.9 with the UT2 inks (no
black, just grey inks) in my 1270 with Epson photo paper. I really
like the appearance of these prints and wish that Epson or some other
company would put the same coating on a thicker, acid free paper base.

RE: [Digital BW] Glossy Paper Heavy Weight

John,

>maybe I should use something else.

I use EEM for display and non-archival uses. It's a great paper and value
for many purposes. However, the risk is, even with snapshots, for example,
that I make one not thinking about archival uses, but it turns out to be the
best image of an important person down the road years from now.

So, how to balance longevity with other important criteria can be tough.
But I increasingly use cotton-based matte papers even for snapshots.

There are a number of cotton-based inkjet papers. PhotoRag is probably the
most popular, in part because it has the best dmax of any of the current
papers. (Permajet Alpha will likely match it when released.) However,
PhotoRag has a sensitive surface. It and most cotton-based papers have
problems with flaking (small bits of coating coming off) that is a nuisance
to deal with, but can be largely eliminated by brushing or wiping the
surface off before printing. The surface is also very easy to damage by
abrasion and is sensitive to some chemicals.

I am occasionally invited to give talks to groups about archival printing
and old photo restoration. To these groups, I recommend Epson Scrapbook
paper (also sold by PremierArt as Fine Art Hot Press and by Epson in rolls
as UltraSmooth). It is a cotton-based paper with a surface that does not
flake significantly. It also has no optical brighteners in it. These make
a paper look whiter, but they burn out and make the paper look relatively
yellow after being exposed to light for long periods. The byproducts of the
brighteners breaking down are very reactive and were apparently the cause of
some of the original RC paper problems. Whether they will cause trouble in
long term storage or display of inkjet prints is unknown, but I favor papers
with no optical brighteners for long term display or storage.

(Actually, with the 2200 and UT7 [perhaps with LC in the LM spot], Arches
Hot Press 90 may be the ultimate matte paper for longevity. However, I
don't know how it prints with Image Print, and I doubt most will want to
deal with an uncoated paper. It's in fade testing now.)

For glossy paper, Premium Luster very likely is archival. The entire Epson
Premium line of papers (Semigloss, Gloss, Luster, & Semimatte) are the only
glossy papers that I've tested that have a buffered paper interior and print
well with pigments. Wilhelm rates them at ">200 years" of dark storage.
This is the same rating he gives the best cotton papers. However, so many
of us photographers got burned by RC photo papers in the past that I think
there will be a lot of distrust of this type of paper in terms of it's long
term stability.

Hope this helps.

Carl,

Have you tried going into the "Ink Config" area (bottom left of the 2200
Properties box) and increasing the "Color Density" 20%? It increased the
dmax for me with Epson Glossy Photo paper and the Glossy HW paper. I'm not
sure what you'd get with the UT1 and PK.

I agree. I'm going to test the spray buffer to see if that works. That
would take care of half of the problem.
