Epson 4870

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Epson 4870. I had been wanting
to get a scanner that would also permit me to scan medium format
negs. The CoolScan 9000 seems to be way overpriced. A thousand
dollars difference between it and the 500, just to scan larger negs.
The 4870 looks like a reasonable compromise.

Hi Bob,

Since you mentioned the CoolScan 9000 I'm assuming you're interested
in scanning medium format negatives and slides. Having an interest
in doing the same, I picked-up a 4870 about 2 weeks ago and am very
pleased with the results. I have a 35mm neg/slide scanner, so I'm
using it almost exclusively for medium format, however, with a fair
amount of Unsharp mask in Photoshop it does a satisfactory job with
35mm slides as well. DigitalICE is phenominal and has already saved
me several hours of clean-up in Photoshop. Overall, a great scanner
at a great price!

In case you haven't seen it - here's a really good 4870 review:

I haven't had the 4870 for long.
I can say that it is much improved from the 3200.
I scanned numerous 4x5 chromes this week. The real optical resolution
is probably not much better than my 3200, but that ICE sure is nice :-)
The larger film scanner area will be a real timesaver i.e. two 4x5 at
once instead of just one.
Sorry, no B&W negs yet. However, I will report on that soon.

Bob, Here is a good link for the Epson 4870 scanner. It is quite
extensive staring with opening the box all the way to making scans.

My 4870 just arrived this week so I have not given it a complete shake
down as yet. First impressions are very good though. The 120 film
holders are still poorly designed but Doug Fisher has made what appears
to be a very good one for this scanner and 120 film. I just ordered
them from him. His email is filmholder@....
