Opps! Hit the wrong key and may have double posted. Excuse me. Anyway, having read on this forum about the C84 for around $8 after rebates, and being without defenses against any deal that even remotely looks good, I went to Office Depot and did get a C84 but the clerk couldn't figure out one of the two $20 rebates. The $50 rebate and the other $20 rebate posed no problems. Since even $28 for a good printer isn't outrageous, I bought one home. My wife, who believes what she reads when it means $20 got on the phone to the Epson rebate center and soon got the other $20. So, I'm $8.00 poorer and a C84 richer. Joe D

So, what is so exciting about this printer that everybody [or at least a whole lot of people on this group] wants one?? Personally I wouldn't get one even if it's free, if I would have a decent printer at home... Am I missing something here? Man, I was thinking all of this news about C84 was really wild until last night. After a long day at work yesterday I stopped by my friendly neighborhood pub to have a beer, mind you I just had one beer, and headed home before it got too late, must have been around 1 am. On the way home I decided to take a long short-cut home to relax; mind you this is out in the middle of nowhere. When all of a sudden I saw these bright lights come out from no where. The light got so big and bright I had to pull over until it passed. As it pass I noticed that it was a big giant Epson C84 printer, man was it BIG. On the back I noticed a sign that said, "Epson rules, an Epson printer in every household". When I got home the FBI was waiting for me; they told me they had been conducting some holographic experiements in the area and that anything I might have seen was strickly an illusion and that I should go to bed a forget the whole matter. When I went in and logged on to the internet, I started getting all of these pop-up messages on unreal deals for Epson C84 printers, even though I have software that is supposed to prevent such things. Well it has been a long day, think I better go get some sleep. Randy Sorry if I strayed from the topic of this forum, please forgive the diversion. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Ernst Dinkla <E.Dinkla@c...> wrote: > Joe Davajon wrote: > > Opps! Hi! Well, I read your mail and thought US$8 for a fairly good inkjet is great! I thought of buying one myself. Even with shipping costs and all, I thought it might be worth buying it through Office Depot! However, I cannot understand all the rebates you are talking about; I mean 50+20+20 is great, but how and by what means? Could you shed some light on that one for me?! Also, can you guide me as to how I can get it through Office Depot the way you got it? Sorry for bothering you. Awaiting Help! :-). Thanking You With Regards Paresh Pandit Mumbai, IN Wednesday, June 09, 2004 _____

For monochrome, quad printing (I believe limited to 8"x10"), yes I would think the C84 would be equal to the higher-end Epson photo printers, such as the 1280 or 2200. IMHO, the higher-end printers (with 6 or more colors), are superior for color work. The lowly (and discontinued) Epson 1160 (4-color) is still a favorite for monochrome printing. ...Ben

I can't speak from experience yet. Hopefully soon! Let me repost something I saved from this forum, posted by Matthew Born: BEGIN REPOST: I picked up a C82 when Paul first made the EZ ink set. My plan then was to use it for the occasional glossy print using the photo K ink. I'd been using UT in my 1280 for matte prints, my primary need, for a while. Paul then reported he'd gotten nice prints in the C82 using the EZ color inks along with the original Epson 'durabrite' black ink. These prints would be less archival, of course (vs. the full EZ set), but I had no intention of selling prints off this machine, so I was intrigued. (And in truth the durabrite inks should be a big step up from regular dyes anyway -- I'd expect these prints to last a while under proper circumstances.) I figured it wouldn't cost anything to try this combo and -- if it worked -- I'd have a nifty little printer that could print on both glossy and matte. (Of course, this has all been superceded by UT2 and Paul's curves which permit printing on both surfaces with the Eboni black anyway...thus, my C82 is almost never used anymore). However, I gotta say -- that combination in the C82 produces mind-bogglingly good prints. To think Epson claimed the 2200 would make B&W prints out of the box...the C82 with that ink combination kicks it to the curb, calls it names, and pours hot coffee over its head. In fact, I can only just barely see the difference between it and the 1280, at least with the durabrite K in there. All for about $125, including the EZ ink purchase. And with zero experimentation on my part. I've thought about trying the media setting changes to see if I can detect any dmax difference on the C82 (re: under printing w/color) but have not done so. I'll try it today. Of course, I am still using the durabrite K in there, so I dunno how my results are skewed anyway. If I recall the conversations back then correctly, I'm getting a little better dmax from the durabrite black as it is. As for other papers, the only things I've run through it are EEM, photo rag, Epson Premium semigloss, and Ilford pearl. All have fed and printed perfectly. And even though it sits literally for two or three weeks without use it never clogs. IMHO, this should absolutely be the break-in way to digital B&W for almost everyone. For lots and lots of people they'll never need anything more. It's painfully easy and the results are amazing -- no qualifications, either -- just plain first-rate. And I must once again thank Paul Roark for his tireless work and astonishing generosity. The joy of photography has returned for me because the digital workflow actually works now...I shoot film, process it, scan it, and print using UT inks. Step four had been the obstacle for a long time. No longer is A&I siphoning off my son's college fund... Matthew Born

The hextone printers have somewhat less dense dots than the C82 or C84. That is, the hextone printers are very slightly smoother in the highlights. The C82 & C84 have smoothness that is essentially the same as the high-end UltraChrome printers (2200, 7600 and 9600) using the Image Print RIP, according to my tests. Not bad for a $70 (plus or minus whatever) printer. No printer can make a more archival print than the C82 or C84 using the MIS EZ inks and a good cotton paper, like Epson PremierArt matte Scrapbook paper. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

FWIW, I went to one of my local Office Depots this afternoon to get a Canon inkjet (i560) with their $20 and $50 off deals. Their web site says they're out of stock and you can't add one to the cart on line, but the store had a half dozen of them on hand and gave me $20 off at the register with the coupon code number posted early on in this thread. The store also had several of the Epson C84 printers on hand, but since I wasn't sure that the $50 rebate was available on that one (the store clerk checked their on line rebate database from his terminal and said the C84 was NOT included, as I had been told by customer service yesterday on their 1-800 number - I do understand others have received the opposite advice from Office Depot) I went with the Canon. Net cost to me will be about $34, about $6 of which is sales tax. It will go to college with my daughter in the fall. I will be able to fill C, M and Y cartridges with Goodies ink and save her a bit on the color inks, but the black is a special pigmented ink in a fat cart that we will probably have to replace retail. Oh well . . . If I could have been sure that the C84 would qualify for the $90 of total discounts and rebates I would have bought one just to play with the MIS EZ inks, but since I already have Lyson Quads in a Canon 9000 and MIS UT Eboni in an Epson 860 to play with black only, I didn't feel like spending over $60 for another printer. Maybe somebody else will run a super special on it sometime again. Cheers, Kip At 6/9/2004 07:45 PM -0700, you wrote: >It is through officedeopt.com. to bad that office >depot does not list that printer on their web site.

Don,
I have a c82 and appreciate your remarks. However, I do not feel
that I could acheive your results without additional info. I have seen
many posts on this subject here and am still unclear what to order,
what ink slots to put it in.
Do you feel your prints are "dotless" enough given the drop size of
the C82 vs newer printers?
Can you please tell us precisely how you run the C82 to get these
results.
1. What inks do you put in each position
2. The precise names of the non-Epson papers you use
3. What you do to get your screen to match the print using, I presume,
Photoshop CS
4. What if any settings you change when you change papers
Thank you,
Stuart
