Trade away my 2200 for a 1280? Help!!!!

Trade away my 2200 for a 1280? Help!!!!

2004-11-09 by dinolini

I've mostly lurked on the site and let me thank all of you for the time, energy & advice you
so freely give. It's truly appreciated by those like me who might really benefit from your
efforts. Thanks,thanks,thanks.

my dillema:

I print 95+% b&w. I have a 2200 w/OEM inks and use the Wilkerson (Wilkinson?) profiles. I
consistently get a decided magenta cast and to estimate +green is inconsistent and paper/
ink costly. I'm (as you can guess) very frustrated and reluctant to spend another $500 for
RIP sw of the MIS or similar ink setup. Any advice to cure this situation and encourage me
to keep the 2200 is certainly welcome.

possible (logical?) workarounds:

1) spend $200 (the price of a used 1280 that I'd be willing to spend) and get Epson RIP
2) sell my 2200,get a 1280 and print BO
3) sell the 2200,get the 1280 and use Lyson Ink set

any other ideas?

your perspective on all this will be greatly appreciated. IE: what would *you* do?

Thanks again,

Robert

Get a grip; buy a RIP. I have the Epson 2200, a
ColorBurst RIP ($495) and perfectly neutral prints,
under any light source. Don't go back in time. Onward
and upward! :-)

1st thing I'd ask is how are you printing? Are you printing a
grayscale image rather than rgb mode? Are you printing from photoshop
using the epson driver using "print with preview"? Are you printing
black only or using the full ink spread? Are you using a proper paper
profile? An most importantly are you clicking the box marked "NO COLOR
ADJUSTMENT"? The last bit is big, if it's not checked the system does
double profiling and you will often get magenta prints. Other than
that have you tried Roy Harrington's Quad Tone Rip?

OK Ron,
my deathgrip on the extra $300 is loosening as we speak, and after only two replies!.I
guess I figured that was where I'd be heading.

I went to the Colorburst site, though, and 1)all the SW for OSX is also $800 and not listed
for the 2200,so I'm a little confused. If you're working on a Mac,are you using OSX,or
printing in 9? 2) What program did you get for $495? That's the price for LE-4000,but
that's made for OS9. X-Photo is at $700 and OSX but is listed for the 4000 only.
so...which one did you buy? ( I'll be working on a Mac,with Photoshop CS-requires
Postscript?)

I'm not as obsessed w/ price as it sounds-I'll probably spend the dough, but now to find
the "right" RIP to GRIP.

Thanks,
Robert

Steve's suggestion of imagePrint is an $800 solution-fair enough, but I'd rather not.--- In

Josh,

I've been trying to pay attn to what's been suggested here. Yup, RGB mode,Epson
Driver,Print w/Preview,Full Ink spread,right profile and NCA-and I *still* get a magenta
cast-really tough,because I'm trying to get neutral-ultra neutral,perhaps,as i like my prints
on the cool side...

I'll check out Harrington's....thanks (any tips for using it,other than what's on the site?)---

Get QTR with the QTRgui, costs only 50$ and works like a charm.

Have you tried printing Black Only? It's the preferable method for
many. Many of us tried all the MIS inksets, and found we liked BO with
Eboni best. And, it sure is the easiest and cheapest option. It's not
liked by everyone, but I suspect some just believe it's too simple to
work well and believe they must have a more complex solution.

It's very well documented by Clayton Jones at

As always I agree with Hans. I just answered a nearly identical
question in the Qimage group. My answer was that I too thought about
IP at one stage for much the same reasons. I then discovered QTR &
QTRGui for B&W work, which solved the problem of getting neutral B&W
prints from a 2200 using UC inks. When used in conjuntion with Qimage
for page layout, you've virtually got a B&W equivalent of IP for much
less. Given this, I wasn't convinced that the extra money for IP was
worth it for my humble requirements.

By all means, if you need IP's functionality, buy it, but if your
interest is mostly in B&W, then personally I'd regard it as a little
crazy if you didn't at least try QTR(Gui) first.

Download QTR at:

http://www.harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html

QTR is excellent for B+W and toned images.

For color you still use the Epson driver.

sounds good-I've been to the site (Roy Harrington's) and found the QTR download. Where
(and what) is the GUI part of the equation.-I'm working in Panther and the Gimp-Print site
says I don't need it (Gimp-Print). Do I still need the EPS Ghostprint? A bit confusing as to
what's needed to make this work.

Thanks for your help..

Robert

The GUI part is only for windows...so you don't need it.

QTR will install all the Gimp files that you need.

After QTR is installed go Profiles folder and open 2200-UT Folder. Double cliick the
Install2200.

After that I'd recomend doing a Repair Disk Permissions via the Disk Utility app.

You don't need anything Roy's instructions don't say you need.
Read anthing and everything that comes with QTR.
