For Paul/creating a gamma curve for soft proofing

For Paul/creating a gamma curve for soft proofing

2005-02-08 by Marcus

Paul, I recently came across your article on softproofing using a gamma curve for black
and white. I have been getting superb results and finally not waisting paper. THANK
YOU. You have no idea how excited I was to find this bit of information. I do have a few
questions though. In your article you state this for step 7....

7. Now you are back at the image file you had originally opened. Go to View, Proof
Setup, Custom. The new curve you made should be in the list, probably at the bottom –
Select it. Then check "Preserve Color Numbers." The image on the monitor should then
look like it did while you were making the curve. Hit OK.

My questions is, I am unable to check "preserve color number" because it is grayed out.
Am I doing something wrong? Also, what should the intent be set to...perceptual,
absolute colorimetric or one of the other?

If my image is in rgb and I go to convert it to the softproof gamma curve, I get a message
that says, "could not load the proof set up because the source and destination have
different color modes". So what I have been doing is changing it to grayscale and then
converting to the sooftproof. I have a feeling I am not doing this the way it is supposed to
be done. After converting to the soft proof, I make any necessary changes to the image
and then convert back to rgb and print using the carbon curve you created. The prints are
looking great but I feel like I am missing a step or something.

Does this sound correct to you or am I doing something out of order?
Any help would be appreciated. And thanks again for the advice you provide to all of us.

P.S. I hope I made some sort of sense out of this mess.

The procedure for profiling the monitor is at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Monitor-Profiling.htm .

Marcus, I have not had time to look at the questions you asked. It does not
work with RGB files, however. I always edit my images in grayscale and save
them before converting to RGB for printing through a curve.

Great, that answers my biggest concern. Now I just need to know about this one for step
# 7.

And for anyone that has not tried this profiling method, you should try it because it is
saving me from buying an expensive calibration device and I am not waisting paper any
more. THANK YOU PAUL FOR GIVING US THIS VALUABLE PIECE OF INFORMATION.

I just changed #7 to indicate that it is the Profiles list where you'll find
the new custom dot gain curve. After you select that, the "Preserve Color
Numbers" should be able to be checked. You have to select the new profile
before the box becomes active.

Hi Paul,

Have tried several times the last ten days to send you some email off list.
Regarding Ink sep (part two) and some thoughts about clogging, CFS etc.
The emails come back all the time, "can't deliver
email" "address has permanent fatal errors".

Have you changed your address?

Hans,

At least some in England are also being blocked from reaching my main
e-mail. It must be some new filter my e-mail provider has started. Try my
Yahoo e-mail address. I'll e-mail you off-list from this address now. The
Yahoo address seems to work for England.

Yes, there's been a lot of news and complaining lately about Verizon
blocking all mail from the UK and some other European locations to avoid
spam.

Blocking all mail from a particular country denotes the use of aging
technologies. But you would never guess that from their tv commercials.

My ISP installed, free of charge to its subscribers, anti-spam
blocking last year. Instead of receiving up to 50 spam email a day I
now get 3 or 4. But I do get the legitimate mails, wherever they
originate in the world.
