I guess that's what I expectedunfortunately.
I'm trying to improve the 4x5 scans that I get from my Epson 1680which
are sharp enough generally but the carriers clip the edges of the film
and I'd rather not have that happen.
Thanks Mike.

Peter,

I did buy a pack and I am using it with my Linoscan 1400 to scan 4x5
negatives at 1200 dpi. I do not see anything in the scans from the
UltraBase but I don't consider myself an expert in this either.

I have all the materials for wet mounting with Kami fluid but have
not tried it yet. When I do I will post a comparison with the
UltraBase.

Wish I had more scanner resolution. Someday a Polaroid 45 Ultra maybe.

Martin,

I've been trying anti-newton ring oil and other mounting supplies from
Prazio. Got some good, clean scans Saturday from two 4x5 negs but it's
otherwise a very messy business. The 1680 has an alternate focal point
for transparencies of 2.5mm, so I bought a piece of optically clear
glass (could only get 2mm) to mount the film on. Using the oil and a
mylar overlay (oil both underneath and on top of the film), the scans
seemed sharper and cleaner. I used a rubber roller and my fingers to get
the air bubbles outa somewhat tedious business. Nothing definitive
overall though. By the end of the day I wound up cutting a mask from a
piece of exposed 7-mil graphics art film and was taping the negative on
to that in order to bypass the scanner's included carrier. I'm way to
impatient it seems for the oil thingand my hands shake from a slight
tremor when mounting, so it was a bit frustrating. But I'll try it again.

2001-11-20 by Martin Wesley

Peter,

Does sound like a lot of work! The Kami fluid is supposed to clean up
easily. I will probably go with putting the neg directly on the
scanner glass like I have with the UltraBase. That probably is about
1.5 to 2mm lower than the intended position but it seems better to
have it flat than sagging in the flimsy holder.

Send me your address of list and I will send you some UltraBase to
try.

Peter, what software are you using? Both vuescan and silverprint allow you
to use the tranny lid and put the focus to 0.

Julian,
I use both (though I've found VueScan seems corruption prone; lots of
hiccups on a Mac). But my thinking was that it might be easier to mount
on a separate sheet of glassas on a Scitex Eversmart. That way the oil
is isolated from the scanner more.
Thanks

Martin,

Also I'd be glad to send you some mylar sheets if you'd like to give
that a go. Lots of prepress shops wrap the film with mylar in a kind of
drum-film-mylar sandwich.

thanks,
Peter

I've always sworn by vuescan but for the1680 silver... seems better. I need
to try this oil mounting bit. More experimentation!

Martin,

I'm anxious to hear your experiences with the kammi fluid. I havn't
purchased any yet but would like to soon. I'm getting very good scans from
my PowerLook III just using the 4x5 holder. I find that 1200 dpi is more
than enough for inkjet sizes and holds up extremely well when I send off for
lightjets. But, I'm wishing for a 45 Ultra myself.

Martin,

Can you elaborate on what the optical mylar is used for? Does it prevent
newton rings?

[Digital BW] Re: UltraBase

2001-11-21 by Martin Wesley

Scott,

This is from an article by George DeWolff in Camera Arts magazine.

Basically you tape a piece of optical grade Mylar to the glass plate
of the scanner. Kami also makes a tape just for this purpose.

You then place some mounting fluid (George used mineral oil) on the
glass and lay your negative on top of the fluid. Put more oil on top
and lower the taped Mylar over the negative.

Using a soft cloth or scanner wipes, gently smooth down the Mylar and
push out any air bubbles between the negative and glass and negative
and Mylar.

You now have a glass-fluid-negative-fluid-Mylar sandwich. There are
three benefits. One, the negative is perfectly flat. Two, any surface
imperfections on the film and dust are rendered invisible. Three, you
reduce the number of surface-air interfaces between the image and the
lens which degrade the optical performance.

George's article with photographs is really amazing.

If you search the archives here and on the Piezo list for wet
mounting you should turn up a lot of info.

Martin,

Thanks for the information. I remember talk on the list about George's
article but was unable to find it at the news stands or bookstores. I will
probably have to contact the publisher and order a back issue.

Martin,

Can you tell me where you bought the Kami. I've had trouble finding a
place online to buy it. Based upon user reports of easy cleanup, it was
my first choice.

Thanks

Peter,

I bought mine locally from a company called Primesouce, which sells
prepress supplies and equipment. They have branch offices all over
the US.

I got the Mylar and Ultrabase from Media Street.

I hope that helps.

Martin

I was wondering what material to buy (is it called Mylar or Ultrabase
or ?). and what thickness in mm to look for. to try and keep negs
flatter in the 120 film holder for the Polaroid Sprintscan 120 ?

I searched the archives and found this thread ... hopefully I can
catch up and try this technique.
thank you,
Frank
