R1800

R1800

2005-03-15 by Paul Roark

I saw some R1800 samples yesterday. There is good and bad news there.

The Epson Premium Glossy prints I saw used the Epson glop to get a super
gloss over the entire image. They are impressive if super gloss color is
your target. I'm sure the color market for this is large and justifies the
system. However, it's not for me. It looks very plastic.

The glop grayed the whites noticeably, and the B&W that was done with the
OEM inks and glop on Premium Glossy was NOT free of "bronzing." The
reflective artifacts may not be bronze in color, but they are much more
intense than I see on the Kirkland glossy, 7600 UT7 print I just made
without any glop.

The matte prints were OK. Most of the B&W prints, however, had obvious
color tints and were not competitive with a B&W inkset. The 1280 with a B&W
inkset can do much better.

Thanks, Paul. FINALLY, somebody has seen a real print.

BTW- "very plastic." That's my feeling about laminated prints.

Any good places to still pick up an Epson R1800 to use with the 3-MK MIS system?

Or just wait for a bit until the Epson R1900 is supported?

Thanks - bryan

Bryan,

I got mine as a refurb directly from Epson, cost $349 including
shipping and handling. So far it's working great but haven't loaded in
the Eboni carts per Paul's 3-MK MIS system, having a little trouble
getting empty carts. Besides, I wanted to use the OEM carts for a
while till I make sure it's working properly in case I had to send it
back.

I'm glad to see you mention his system, people reading his post might
get the impression at a first reading this printer won't do quality
b/w work. He's doesn't mention his 3-MK method - being too modest! I
ordered some 3-MK sample prints from him using this method and they
are excellent.

Try Amazon and eBay.

No one knows if or when the 1900 will be supported. Epson's practice
is to make it more difficult for others to use their printers.

At the Espon Store today, customer service is offering the R1800 for $399 with free shipping. They seem to have plenty available with a 1 year warranty. Unfortunately, they could not clarify what 'Currently Out of Stock' means for new units as there is no internal notice of a halt in production nor could they offer when they might have some newly manufactured ones in stock. What's the historical interpertation of these Epson messages, and how wise is it to get a refurb unit now considering it may come without the manuals, accessories and even some of the software?

FWIW, I've bought a number of the refurb C88s from Epson over the past
few years, and except for the plain brown box they came in I don't
believe there was anything "missing" as compared to a new unit. They
all had manuals (quick start and full) and a software disk and power
cords, plus a set of Epson brand ink cartridges that were worth as much
alone as the price of the printer. An 1800 obviously won't be quite
that great a bargain, but I'd be surprised if there were anything
missing except the printed outer box.

Cheers,
Kip

I picked mine up at the Epson store for 299 with free shipping...that was a half year ago. All was intact, ink, manuals, both CD and hard copy etc.
I had a problem with it printing, I sent it back to Epson three months after I bought it, and they sent me a new one. They told me to keep the inks and the plasticware for the roller and only send the printer.

Re: R1800

i just bought a refurbished one from the epson store. it arrived last
week. no problems. nothing missing. looks brand spanking new to me. not
even any cosmetic scratches.

it looks like prices fluctuate. perhaps based on supply and demand. i
got mine for $279 with free shipping so i thought it was a pretty good
deal. i could not find a lower price anywhere at the time. so based on
this experience, i would recommend it.
