MIS ink cartridges not working.

MIS ink cartridges not working.

2005-05-28 by morley4now

Hello
I just installed a set of B&W EZ Neutral Cartridges from MIS into my
new Epson Stylus Color C86 printer. After installing the ink I ran
through 3 cleaning cycles and then tried to print the purging test
pattern from MIS Associates, but nothing printed. I tried 3 more times
and still nothing. The printer goes through all of the motions, but no
ink.

I went to MIS web page to see if there was any help for this problem,
but didn't find any.

Am I doing something wrong, or do I have some bad cartridges? It seems
unlikely that all 4 would be bad

Does the Epson Status Monitor show ink in the carts? You might try putting
back the Epson carts, to see if they still work. If they do then you
probably really do have bad MIS carts. If you can't get any ink out of them
either, then it's possible the heads went clogged (or some other malfunction
occurred) just at the point where you changed inks.

Did you remove the plastic material from the vent covers?

I did try removing and reinstalling, but no joy. The cartridges seem
to install correctly. The clip on the back engages. What else should I
check for?

Thank you

Thanks Paul. I thought of that after I posted my original message. The
status monitor does show ink in the carts, and after reinstalling the
original Epson ink the printer works as it should.

There is a piece of silver tape on the top of each cartridge. Is that
what you're referring to? I didn't remove it. Should I?

YES! Remove it now!

That silver tape is covering a vent hole!

Should one remove it before filling with ink or after?

Thank you everybody for your help. After removing the tape over the
vent holes I was able to get ink on paper, but with very disappointing
results.

I have not been able to print a single purging test pattern without
serious banding. The nozzle test utility confirms that some of the
nozzles are clogged. I have done at least 12 cleaning cycles and
printed 6 test patterns, and NOW I AM ALMOST OUT OF INK.

My experience with this ink system has not been good. I am very
disappointed. My first problem was partly my fault, because I did not
remove the tape over the vent holes, but I didn't because the Epson
documentation said not to and I got no instructions to the contrary
from MIS. It seems to me that this is an obvious source of problems
that can be cured with a simple instruction.

My second problem speaks more directly to the quality of the product.
If I can't get a good test pattern I will never get a quality image.
There is something wrong with the ink, because I know that the printer
is working perfectly. (I ran many tests before installing the MIS carts)

At this point I have not given MIS the opportunity to address my
issues, so I can't comment on there customer support, hopefully it
will be good.

Is this unique, or are others having problems too?

I really don't know why the tape is there. They ship the carts with the
fill hole uncovered.

Remove the tape BEFORE filling the carts.

Also, let the cart sit in an up-right position for an hour before
putting a plug in hte fill hole.

Then, take a bottom-fill adapter, and remove a little ink from the
bottom port on the cart. The idea is to remove any air that maybe
trapped there.

Install the carts and run a "nozzle check". Is the nozzle check is no
good, let the printer sit for an hour or so and then try again.

DON'T RUN A CLEANING CYCLE! It will only make things worse.

Thanks Scott. I just ran a nozzle test and it still shows problems. It
has been over an hour since the last activity on the printer. The
carts that I have are new, not refills, so I don't have a bottom-fill
adapter. I don't think there is enough ink left the cartridges if I did.

I don't think they were full before installing them.

On full carts it's there to prevent ink from leaking out but,
on empties I have no idea.
I take it off before filling. If I overfill I will see the ink
start to come out of the vent. I can then gently pull back on
the syringe.

I had similar problems with my set of EZ inks on a brand new C86. The
first printouts were great, then with the K cartridge ~3/4 empty, I was
getting banding. So I started to run cleaning cycles, with very much the
same problems you described.

After wasting a complete K cartridge, I removed the MIS cartridges,
re-installed the original Epson C86 cartridges, ran one cleaning cycle
and two purge4.tif printouts, and everything was OK. Then I re-installed
the MIS cartridges, did another purge4 printout, and since then the C86
is printing nicely.

So in a nutshell: try cleaning cycles with the original Epson cartridges.

MIS support is very responsive, just open a ticket via email or web.
In my case they responded quickly, but only with the hint to remove the
sealing tape. Which I did in the first place. (No instructions, but this
seemed logical. ;-)

Hope this helps,
Martin

QImage drives it at 720 dpi, so the C86 most likely does something like
1440 dpi. There is no explicit dpi setting in the printer setup, though.

Re: [Digital BW] MIS ink cartridges not working.

2005-05-29 by Nick H. Nugent

Hello Morley,

Your cartridges were pre-filled EZ Neutral b/w carts so they came to
you with the vent holes sealed, and of course the fill holes plugged.
Your initial attempt to use the carts with the vent holes still sealed
was the main problem. After several cleaning cycles the print head
chambers are now seriously blocked by air bubbles, or foam. And worse
yet the cart outlets may also be filled with foam as well. The
cleaning pump on these C series or new Epson printers are very
powerful, it will pull air in around the rubber seal where the cart
meets the printhead if the ink flow is blocked for some reason.

Some suggested you use the original Epson C86 carts to get back good
nozzle checks, that's a great idea. The MIS purging carts will also
work, maybe even better, to remove the trapped air pockets inside the
head. The MIS purging carts are good at travelling into the head's
tiny capillaries to break up foam.

Then if there is still ink in your EZ cart try this trick without
using the bottom fill adapter: wrap your cart in a paper towel and
place it in a plastic bag, tie the bag and cart with a rubber band,
and give it several centrifugal spins with the cart outlet facing
outward. You may not have enough ink to use the bottom fill adapter
anyway. Then try again.

Good luck,
--nick

Nick,
Sounds like you've had a bit of experience with the EZ carts and the
C86. I ordered a set of inks w/ 2 Eboni cartridges the other day and
will be using those in an existing C84. Your comments and those of
others have been very informative for me and almost kept me away from
getting these. But, I, and I'm sure others, could benefit from a
quick start of definite and absolutely needed things to do to get a
new set of carts up an running on either a new or an existing C84/86.

If you and/or other veterans could help, then I'm certain the info
would very well received.

When I bought my C86, I installed the MIS pre-filled carts without
ever using the Epson carts.

The MIS inks went FAST, with that 1st set.

Then I bought re-fillable carts and bulk MIS ink. The ink isn't used
nearly as fast as that first set. Go figure.

I highly recommend re-fillable carts and bulk MIS inks.

If you go that route, let us know and we'll fill you in on what to
purchase.

Scott,
This is exactly my plan, too. I ordered an initial set of cmy carts
and 2 Eboni carts to get up an running so I can see how this system
will work for me. Once I'm satisfied with the output I was planning
to order the refillables. Please feel free to post what you feel is
needed to do this properly. Thanks, Mike Brouphy

There is a difference between in input file resolution and the printing
resolution. With respect the printing (output) resolution, Epson claims as
follows for the C86:

"Maximum Resolution (dots per inch) ... Up to 5760 x 1440 ..."

See
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=ye
s&infoType=Specs&oid=46048263&category=Products

I think that we've heard the maximum input resolution for Epson desktop
printers is 720 dpi. They will resample whatever is fed to them. I would
not go below 300 dpi for small prints. Nor do I ever go above 720 dpi.

MIS occasionally has problems with the cartridges. There was a thread here a
month or two ago where various people related the various problems they
experienced. When I used MIS inks I got bad cartridges (leaking ink)
probably one out of every five or six, then there was a problem with the ink
mixture that went on for quite a while. However, MIS customer service was
excellent, they always sent replacement cartridges promptly and didn't
require that I return the defective cartridges.

Thanks Scott. After following your suggestions and others I have
finally produced a good nozzle check. Before I ran out of ink I was
able to print one B&W image that I restored for a client. I am very
pleased with the quality of the image, and I'm sure my client will be
too. I just wish that I hadn't spent $45 worth of ink to produce it.

I am new to printing my own images. Up till now I have been using a
local lab to do it for me, but the lab is so far away that I decided
to try printing for myself. My plan from the start was to get the
printer and a set of ink so that I could do some testing, and then
move to refillable carts if I liked the results. In spite of my
troubles I have to admit that I do like the results even if I didn't
get to do all of the testing that I had intended.

Any advice that you can provide regarding how to proced with
refillable carts would be welcome. I don't believe that my print
volume will be high enough to justify a continuous flow system. Are
the carts that I have refillable?

Nick this was very helpful. I don't have a set of MIS purging carts,
so I used the Epson ink to purge the air out of my print head. Then
after letting the carts rest for an hour or two it did the centrifugal
spin and reinstalled them. I printed one purge pattern and did a
nozzle test and was happy to see a perfect result. I was able to print
one nice image before running out of ink.

Thank you
Morley

Do you see any problems with using empty pre-filled cartridges and
refilling them with bulk ink? After using two sets of pre-filled
cartridges I thought about switching to bulk ink and refilling.

I had an exasperated cleaning cycle thing with a C84, but mine was
after letting the print sit for about 4 months unused. I snagged a C86
and it worked again pretty much out of the box, but I had initially
shaken the carts too much and had to let it settle down.

Once I put color carts in the C84, she worked like a charm after
one bad print.

In general, I wouldn't recommend running cleaning cycle after
cleaning cycle. Seems you have to wait after a cleaning cycle for
a few hours before one can expect a decent print or nozzle check.

Re: [Digital BW] MIS ink cartridges not working.

2005-05-31 by Nick H. Nugent

Hi Martin,

Yes, with the condition that the pre-filled carts were of the clear,
half-sponged design. As a matter of fact almost all carts are
refillable with varying degree of difficulty but the new refill
friendly carts are probably the easiest.

If your pre-filled carts are not of the refill friendly type just get
a set of blanks from MIS along with your next order of bulk ink. You
may want to call MIS to make sure the blanks for your printer look
like one of these:

   http://www.inksupply.com/c84refill.cfm

or

   http://www.inksupply.com/c82refill.cfm

Please note that for these carts it's best to let the carts sit
overnight after refilling before you try to prime them using the
bottom fill adapter.

That's what I got.

Thanks for your hint. I'll try my luck then ... ;-)
