epson C86 printer

2005-08-15 by albee_co

I am considering purchasing an epson C86 for use with MIS Associates
EZ black and white inks. I have been discouraged after reading about
black dots and ink spill over in this forum. I can deal with contrast
or density adjustments but dots and ink marks would be too much. Can
anybody comment on the use of the epson c86 with black and white inks.

Thanks

I've never had black dots or ink spills. I'm on my second printer. The
first one got zapped by a power spike on the line when lightening hit
a few weeks ago. Neither has given me anything else other than
beautiful prints. I use the CIS system from MIS.

I'm having good luck with mine so far. Although I'm currently doing BO
with the epson ink. That said, I've only had it a few days so far.

Gorgeous prints on EEM. I'd have to say I prefer it doing BO to my HP
7660 with the grey carts. I only bought it to use up the stock of EEM
and Epson Heavyweight Matte that I've not been able to get to work
reliably in the HP.

My C86 with MIS EZ inks has worked flawlessly.

I have seen those dots in the past, either on a sample or on one of my C8x
series printers, but I don't know what caused them. It is not the norm. I
still recommend the printer and use it to make even the 8x10 prints that I
sell. My "Readme" on the printer (which is basically my notes to myself and
others as to settings, etc.) is at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm. See also the tips as to
the resetter and bottom fill adapter that I've found useful at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm (in the C86 section).

I've not had any ink spill, but I am one of two or three people
persistently having the black dots. You really have to go looking for
them - I suspect some people who say they don't get them probably have,
and just haven't noticed. I have not yet exhausted all the
troubleshooting steps that I've worked out, so there may yet be a fix in
the offing.

IMO even if there is not an end-user solution to the black dot problem,
the convenience and cost advantages of MIS EZ make the system
worthwhile. I've been using settings based on Paul Roark's; he's already
given you the url. I'm using EZN; this makes beautiful, rich-looking B&W
prints. Much nicer than anything I ever managed to make with my 2200.

Another vote for this combination. The prints are very nice and
compare favourably with what I can produce in the traditional
darkroom (to my eyes). I even just bought 4 oz. bottles of ink and
refillable cartridges. Highly recommended.

Re: epson C86 printer

Another yes vote from me, assuming it's as least as good as my C84.

Only minor quibbles with mine so far have been an inability to get a
perfect nozzle check (it's insignificant b/c it does not show up in the
prints to my critical eye). Also, it has trouble loading some of the
heavier/stiffer papers sometimes. And while I won't sell its glossy
prints due to annoying gloss differential (still perfectly fine for
sharing snaps), the matte ones on HPR, Innova Cold Press/Soft Texture,
etc. are absolutely sales-worthy... hard to believe, but this is even
with "high speed" checked(!)

Great, affordable little setup and IMO an easy way to stick a toe in
the proverbial water.

Exception rather than the rule. After letting my C84 sit for many,
many months idle I developed a nasty clog that I couldn't free up
with cleaning cycles (I was too lazy to try Windex and the like.) Once,
I bought a 2nd C86, I loaded the C84 with the Durabrite Epson inks
and it was fine after one cleaning cycle or two. So I sold it to a friend
for a nominal fee, and he's happily using it to this day.

Other than that incident, I've had pretty much trouble free operation
(knock wood). Just make a print every couple of weeks and it's fine.
Throw just about anything at it, tweak the sliders and it makes lovely
prints.

Re: epson C86 printer

2005-08-16 by bjornaagedk

Well, I have had several problems with my C86/EZN setup, especially with ink spill. Large
wet drops all over the print. MIS told me not only to use the rubber plug to close the top
holes of the carts but to seal them with hot melting glue as well. I havent tried so yet, but
used a piece of tape instead to seal them. The problem [almost] disapeared, but I have
seen a few drops after that. I have had the same problem with three C86 printers, all
brand new.
I have also tried with several new cartridges and have not been able to totally eliminate the
problem so far. It's a shame, because the print quality from this simple and very cheap
setup is very good. I must say that I also have a C86 printer loaded with MIS durabrite
equivalent inks in the same type of carts, and have never had any problems with inks spill
with color inks.

Re: [Digital BW] epson C86 printer

2005-08-16 by lou4photo

Hi all. My name is Louis Meluso. I am Photography Manager for the
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. At work I print fine art
subjects on an Epson 7600, 5500 and R2400. I've been lurking here for
a while and find it very interesting and informative. Since this
question came up I thought I would jump in and say hello. I just
bought a new C86 and MIS-EZ-N inkset to make some nice B&W prints at
home. The inital investment is quite reasonable and the setup was
easy. I started off using Paul Roark's suggested settings but found
them a bit too flat for my machine. Initally my very first prints had
bad overspray "dots" on the edge of the image and bad banding. I
found I could not get a clean black nozzle check. New machine so I
figured no clog but air bubble in the line. I shut the printer down
and let it sit overnight and restarted the next day. Surprise!
Perfect nozzle check! Perfect purge print. No overspray! I'm stoked!
I took a couple hours of running scales and some small test images to
get at driver/PS curve setting that gave me good range and separation
on EEM and HPR. I can't say it was really quite "EZ" but now my
prints are looking real nice and smooth. I think the word "wow" did
leave my lips at one point. Not quite the brilliance of BO printing
but I think with a bit more tweaking of the curve it will yeild very
satisfying results with great tonal smoothness. I haven't tried
refilling the carts yet but it looks fairly straight forward. I say
jump in! My thanks to the many that share information and experiences
on this forum. It has helped me a great deal.

Louis Meluso
