Do I need a new computer?

Do I need a new computer?

2005-08-16 by Scott Jones

Greetings:

My current computer seems to not be handling PSCS2 and Bridge very
well with very long processing times and hang up's when running both
Bridge and PSCS2. I need to figure out whether to install more RAM
or get a new computer. Here are my specs:

Dell Dimension 8200, Pentium 4 2.53Ghz, 512MB RDRAM (this is that
Rambus RAM that many don't use anymore), GeForce Ti4200 card with
DVI out, CRT monitor, 40GB drive, added by me 300GB second drive,
300GB external Maxtor 1 touch drive for backup, XP home.

It looks like I can add a max of 1 GB more RDRAM for about $500 and
will need to flash my BIOS to make it work.

The other option is to buy a new computer and just quickly searching
Dell for a 2GB RAM machine looks like about $1600 but would have a
new flat screen included. Perhaps it is also good to wait to buy a
new machine when all the new PC OS, 64 bit, and other enhancements
become prime time perhaps in the next year of so.

My question is this: Will simply putting 1 GB more RAM (for a total
now of 1.5GB)help me out and is it silly to spend so much on a new
machine that I am not sure I need. My GOAL is to have PSCS2 and
Bridge working smoothly and quickly.

Thanks for any advice you can give me...

That processor is still pretty competitive. Personally, I would add more
RAM. If the mother board can accept non-Rambus RAM, explore replacing
all the RAM and uping the thing to 2GB. Might end up cheaper than buying
more Rambus RAM. Should be dandy for handling run of the mill RAW
images of DSLR, even at 1.5GB.   (BTW, I just did a 512MB -> 1.5GB
upgrade myself quite economically and easily on my own PC).

I'd wait to get a new box until the multi-core chips become mainstream
over the next year or so and the software catches up to adequately use
them. With the simpler power/head disipation and single memory controller
of a multicore chip (and lots of other stuff) vs. a true multiprocessor
box,
the multi-core computers should provide a nice power boost at a relatively
big discount to current multi-cpu computers. So that's why I'd wait before
plunking down $1,6K on a new box.

When you see something that looks too good to pass up, jump on it.

They find deals like this and better every so often. BTW, that is pretty
attractive with the 24” LCD. And yes, 512MB ram is not enough for CS2 and
bridge.

1 gig more ram will certainly help, but $500 is a little spendy. Why
not upgrade the motherboard, processor and ram? You could probably do
all three (with 2 gig of ram) for close to $500.

Re: Do I need a new computer?

I think the extra gig would make a bit of difference - but you may not
get it working smoothly and quickly depending on what you are doing. I
have a 2.8Ghz/1GB RAM that I built with top-notch components last
year. It's been overclocked to 3.2Ghz since I built it and *this* box
was having issues with getting Bridge and PS to run smoothly together.
I don't know if my usage is more extreme than anyone elses... I
usually point Bridge to a folder with ~200-1000 RAW images in it and
have 1-3 pics open in Photoshop at any given time. With both Bridge
and PS open, XP's memory usage would zing past 1GB quite regularly
even when I was trying to take it easy.

I just bought an extra 2GB and put it in earlier this week and the
performance difference is staggering... much better than I hoped for.
I had to clock the processor speed back to 2.9Ghz because the new
memory wasn't as fast as the older stuff but I can't tell at all - the
performance is really incredible now. Much more usable than before.

IMO $500 for 1GB is blackmail. You could go to newegg.com and get a
new motherboard (one that matches your processor with slots for
standard RAM) and 2GB of standard PC400 for $350. Might be something
to think about.

Scott,

Upgrading from 1gb to 2gb has absolutely been the best upgrade I ever did to
my computer. My files often weigh in at 150-300mb each, and photoshop became
_much_ faster when working with those files. It felt like upgrading to a
totally new computer.

Bridge and ACR still seems awfully slow though. I work much faster in
Rawshooter Essentials 2005. Maybe for those applications a faster processor
would help. I have an Athlon XP2600.

Make sure to test the memory before working on anything important. I got a
faulty chip the first time round, but nothing on my system detected any
errors. I just noticed noticed files getting corrupt and my system becoming
more unstable, so I figured it had to be the memory - But only after losing
several files I spent a lot of time working on. Very scary.

Prime95 has a test mode will reveal any faults on a memeory chip:

Not often possible with a Dell box. They often have proprietary board sizes.

I have pretty much sat back and just read this group an learned so much , but I have some input on this one :)

if you decided to build a new computer look at the Asus A8V Deluxe mother board , the mother board is one of the most important aspects of the computer how upgradeable is your mother board always consider that. You can pop the other components in and out to upgrade most people scrimp on the mother board and spend there money on the processor. Then your stuck you can't upgrade! my processor is the AMD Athlon64 Model 3200+ 2.0Ghz 512k Cache
(800MHz FSB) and I have a gig of duel channel memory for now.

Hard drives, your system does not have to be a huge hard drive so look at the Western Digital Raptor Hard Drive, Serial ATA, 36gb, 10k rpm, 8mb buffer , it is a fast puppy , then you can add a couple of larger hard drives for your images and such I have 3 the faster one runs my system , that helps in my programs and the speed they process things then I have 2 300 gig one for images the other for video. I do video with adobe premiere

I still use Photoshop 7 but I have had Photoshop, fireworks, dreamweaver and several browsers open at one time with no signs of system slowdown.

I recently bought some decent Corsair RAM for under $100 per single
chip set 1GB, I forget the actual price, but it wasn't bad at all. And
it was PC3200 (400Mhz or more) speed too, just not the kind you really
want to use with overclocking.

IIRC the OP mentioned his PC needed RDram (or rambus). Ridiculously
expensive, hard to find, and cannot be substituted with any other form of
RAM.

I'm with all the others that suggest purchasing a new PC.

More RAM will help, but it would be a shame to spend $650 on a "gig"
of RAM.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145150

I just got done ordering a "gig stick" of DDR 2700 for $101, and that
included shipping. I should it Friday. Or, Monday at the latest.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220029

Can't beat NewEgg's prices or service.

FWIW,

Scott

While I certainly agree on the subject of buying a quality motherboard,
don't get an A8V, it will not support your current Pentium IV 2.53GHz
CPU. Look at getting the latest Asus P4 motherboard instead, which will
allow you to continue to use your current CPU. As to drives, avoid the
Raptor as well, it's very expensive. The current Maxtor 300GB is almost
as fast, and around the same price as a 72GB Raptor.
