There was a thread here a few weeks ago discussing some product that uses the latest S-Spline algorithm (or something like that). It's not PS, QImage or GF - was it one of the others mentioned or something else...? Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

Can Qimage also just resize an image and then save it for later use (like with Genuine Fractals). Or is the resizing only done internally when sending a file to the printer? And if it can, does it do a better job then Genuine Fractals? Thanks, Igor

Igor, you can 'save to file' with no problem with Qimage. Diane

PS doesn't do anything like GF. Try upsizing in GF by a factor of ten, and you'll see that it does artificial edge recognition. Or, look at http://www.pbase.com/pderocco/image/36593399 and the following image, to see the difference. -- Ciao, Paul D. DeRocco Paul mailto:pderocco@...

You can re-size with the interpolation of your choice and save the file for printing. The big advantage is, being able to re-size a file with Vector or Pyramid interpolation and then being ablen to print that file on any printer, with the advantage your chosen interpolation. I know someone who re-sizes in QI using Pyramid interpolation, then has the file printed on photographic paper from an Agfa (I think) machine. I like to be able to have the advantage of QI, but knowing I can take a file to another system that doesn't have QI. (Like someone using a Mac system, for example). "Or, look at http://www.pbase.com/pderocco/image/36593399 and the following image, to see the difference." Nice. Now go add Pyramid and Vector. :>) (That GF version looked terrible. I'm glad I never went that route, fwiw) Scott

Hi, If what you want is to resize and print later on, you could try Photozoom Pro. It works on both Mac and PC and VERY nicely. It takes 8 and 16 bit files (they can get pretty large as well) with no problem. They have a demo version to download at: http://www.benvista.com/main/content/content.php?page=downloads regards, Pablo --- scott_now_coming <scott_now_coming@...> wrote: > "Or, look at > http://www.pbase.com/pderocco/image/36593399 and the > following image, > to see > the difference." > > Nice. Yes, but I want to resize it, then re-edit it in Photoshop. So the program should be able to save the resized image in a normal format like Tiff or so, or directly sent it to Photoshop. Can these programs (QI, Photozoom) do that? (Like Genuine Fractals can) Igor
2005-12-23 by Peter Palmieri
Think about this workflow--edit in PS (do not resize or sharpen)>save as a TIFF or JPEG>open subject image in Qimage>Sharpen>print to desired size. Or open non-raw image in Qimage>use Photo Editor setup to move image to PS>image opens in PS>Edit (do not resize or sharpen)>"save as" image>click ok in Qimage dialog box>sharpen>print to size desired. If you are making large prints then by all means sharpen and resize in Qimage. Prints up to about 8.5X11 will not show much of a difference in either one. But, the printing, editing, resizing is much quicker in Qimage unless you are cloning, changing colors, pinning donkey's heads on politicians etc. then PS is the one to use. Peter

Well, about QI I can't tell but as to Photozoom Pro, yes, you can resize, save a tif or whatever format you choose, and then re-edit in photoshop although I would highly recommend you resize and print as a last step and do your editing first. But still, if you want to edit afterwards... you certainly can, in a much larger file -that is-. QImage will let you save as Tiff or Jpeg. Clayton The program I mentioned a short while ago was Photozoom Pro (formerly S-Spline Pro) from Benvista. There was a long discussion of interpolation methods some time ago and S-Spline technology is the latest "maths". I am traveliing at the moment and don't have access to the original thread postings which I saved on my computer. If you are interested I can chase these up when I return to London. I have purchased Photozoom. It's not cheap at Euro129. I have not used it extensively so far but it has worked extremely well when I have used it. I have a few stability issues with the Mac Photoshop export plugin (CS2) but no issues with the standalone application. I am working though these issues with the folks at Benvista who have been extremely helpful. Incidentally I did ask them the following question and their response is copied below: >is there any merit in stepping a spline interpolation in increments rather than in one hit? " We recommend doing it in one hit. Technically, using multiple increments -also called "stair" interpolation- is mathematically the same as doing it in one step and taking a slightly larger area into account around each pixel when interpolating. Theoretically this could result in small improvements (although not necessarily, and can also result in more ringing/jaggies), however it also introduces rounding errors because you always get small "mistakes" when interpolating, and by interpolating many times these mistakes will naturally occur more often and stack up. Actually, we thought about adding stair interpolation to PhotoZoom a while ago, but after some experimenting we didn't consider it a real improvement (there was practically no visual difference) and the much longer processing time definitely wasn't worth it. "

Igor, PhotoZoom Pro will give you a choice of several formats to save your file. TIF, JPEG, PNG, WINDOWS BITMAP and TRUEVISION TARGA. It will also give a large array of resizing choices, like LANCZOS (which I understand is what QI uses), BICUBIC,BILINEAR, NEAREST NEIGHBOUR and of course, S-SPLINE. I hope this is useful to you. QImage can - and the help tells you how. And yes, I think it usually if not always does a better job than GF. The problem with any proprietary software such as that behind GF is that it may not get developed. Expectations - and competing products - have moved on since it came out. However, my simple preliminary tests have shown that SizeFixer is better still, certainly where you are looking at extreme upsizing. http://www.fixerlabs.com/New_Website/pages/reviews_quotes.htm has some links to reviews of this and related products. The problems I have with it: it runs on Windows XP and I'm still mainly working on W2000; it is very slow (20 minutes for the last image I did - resized from 600 to 5164 pixels wide!); it doesn't incorporate batching. perhaps expensive for the amount of use I have for this kind of software. But it does do the impossible better than anything I've yet tried. Glowing reviews as you will find if you look at the link above, from MacWorld, BJP etc Regards, Peter Marshall petermarshall@... _________________________________________________________________ My London Diary http://mylondondiary.co.uk/ London's Industrial Heritage: http://petermarshallphotos.co.uk/ The Buildings of London etc: http://londonphotographs.co.uk/ and elsewhere...... Do you happen to know what interpolation SizeFixer uses? I could find it on their website. I think it is a proprietary adaptive method, rather than any of the well-known algorithms. It says "novel techniques...the first time this technology has appeared in a commercial product." Anybody use any of the other pluggins in the fixer bundle?
