Vuescan

2002-01-28 by timtimmermans7

Hi guys,

First a little announcement. One of my Holga images was accepted into
this years Annual Soho Krappy Kamera competition. 200 photographers
submitted over 1200 images and they only choose 35 so I'm pleased and
honored to have been chosen from such a large pool of excellent
images and photographers.

Now back to digital print making where I am still learning and am so
grateful to the wealth of talent and knowledge that makes up this
fine board.

My question today is:

I just downloaded Vuescan and have only had a chance to view a couple
so far. In comparison with the twain4 on my epson 1200u photo the
image appears sharper but I have difficulty making corrections prior
to final scan. I'm sure I'll figure it out but I thought in interest
of time conservation I would shout out to you all for tips any of you
have learned about settings or standard adjustments you make to
assure best possible scan. I know each neg, transparancy, and even
print will be different but are there some basic rules of attack to
take to get the most out of the source. I noticed on bw negs there
seems to be more information gleened by putting the setting on color
neg rather than b/w. Any tips on best res target or are the auto
settings pretty good on VS. Also, should I check the "sharpen" box
and leave it as a default setting?

I'd appreciate any tips and suggestions you may have. I'm using a PC,
win98, outputting to 1280 using OEM inks and papers for the moment
although a CFS and MIS VM inks are probably in my near future.

Thanks,
Tim Timmermans

Tim,

first, congratulations on being among the 35. Love the name of the
competition too. Does the K in the spelling mean it's fake like Krab? Then it
should be taken to mean fake crappy, like really really excellent.
Ah.... never mind.

About Vuescan - which I own but very rarely use: Keep in mind that if you can
get a high-bit scan out of it, you can do basic steps (histo etc) in Photoshop, a
much more comfortable image-editing environment.

Just my $.02

Antonis

Thanks Antonis for the congrats and for responding to my post.
Why may I ask do you rarely use it? Do you not scan or are using
something else like Silverfast?

Do you or does ANYONE have some basic standard settings that you use?
Bit rates for example. What is best as a default setting? 24bit?
Resolution...1200 dpi?
Is there a way to control the level of Sharpen. It seems too high so
I disengage it.
So you suggest getting just the basic scan and doing all adjustments
in PS? Do you make adjustments after previewing or do you just
crop/frame and scan?

Thanks, Tim Timmermans

Vuescan

I have a question concerning VUEscan. I've been through every panel in
the advanced mode, but I can't find a thing on adjusting levels or
curves. Also, the highest resolution I can scan at for the Agfa T2500 is
1250 DPI. That isn't good enough for 6x6 films, I need the full 2500
DPI. Am I missing something, or doesn't vuescan support higher DPI or
levels or curves? Also, VUEscan runs directly from its folder on the
desktop. SHouldn't it actually be installed in the system folder? There
is no installation program to do this.

Thanks

Jerry

Jerry,
I have a Microtek 2500,which I think is the same as the Duoscan.
I have only sampled Vuescan, but it seems to work well. Try the
following to get 2500 DPI: in the device tab go into the scan mode
box. Select Transparency X2 This will double the resolution and
activate the 4" high resolution area.
Hope this helps.
Peter
