Printer / ink options

Printer / ink options

2006-09-12 by craig

Im in the need for a new printer (have been without one for quite some
time) and only do B&W printing. Where I live, the Epson 2200 is no
longer available, new or refurbished, so I tend to be left with the
2400 as my primary choice. This in itself isnt so much a problem but I
would prefer to print B&W with a greyscale inkset.

Is it likely in the forseeable future that 3rd party greyscale inksets
will be available for the 2400 printer?

consider the 1800 with piezography k7 inks. the printer is almost half the price of the 2400
which leaves you with a few hundred dollars to put toward inks!

As the one who designed the MIS UT-3D, I naturally have a bias in that
direction. It is a very flexible approach. See
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT-3D_Readme.pdf (I have no formal
relationship with MIS.)

That said, you can see from my posts yesterday that I'm very impressed with
what the 2400 can do with just MIS LK, LLk and EZ-Warm-Y installed.
Swapping a Photo Black cart in for glossy is rather easy on desktop
printers. I would not buy into a system that does not print on Crane Silver
Rag and the other modern "glossy" papers.

Of course if 8x10 is enough, the C88 or 220 are great.

At the 13" level the 1280 is still a viable option, but it is slower.

By implication of this statement are you saying the Epson 1800 cannot
print on these papers?

Actually with it being set up for gloss optimizer, it might be a terrific
glossy paper printer with the right inkset and the Epson driver. However,
I'm not sure there is a B&W inkset that is set up for it that can print on
glossy paper. Not all inksets can. I have not used Piezo inks lately, but
I believe Piezo inks may be matte paper compatible only. (I would also not
use the R1800 color inkset to try to print B&W.)
