Epson 2200 and heavier papers

Epson 2200 and heavier papers

2006-12-26 by Scott Holt

I've been experimenting with various papers, trying to find
alternatives to EEM. Two of the papers I have tried, Hahnemuhle
PhotoRag 308gsm, and Inkpress Print Plus Fine Art have been causing
me headaches in my 2200.

With the PhotoRag the printer consistantly catches on the corner of
the page resulting in a torn corner, ink smears and the last 1/8" or
so of the print being out of alignment. This also creates a bit of a
mess on subsequent sheets through the printer (it generally takes 2-3
passes with cleaning sheet to mop up the ink).

With the Print Plus paper the results aren't quite so bad - no jams,
no ink spills, but a gouge in the surface of the print approximately
3/4" from the bottom, and 2" in from the left side.

The print in question has about a 1/2" margin on the bottom. All my
test prints have been on 8.5x11" paper.

I've seen others describe good results with these papers in the 2200
so I am a little perplexed about why I'm having such trouble with
them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know what to suggest. I used a 2200 for two years and
regularly ran heavier stock through it without problems. That said,
the reason I traded it in for a 2400 was because the paper feed
mechanism began to show signs of wearing out, so maybe they can take
only so much of that kind or use. 2200's are getting long of tooth
these days, so maybe your problems are due to a worn paper feed mechanism.

Clayton

Scott,

Are you feeding the heavier papers through the rear (horizontal) loading
slot? It is a less user-friendly method than the automatic feed mechanism
but, as it is designed for thicker papers, it normally overcomes such
problems. The rear loading method is in the Epson pdf manual, but here is a
summary:

1) Put the rear paper feed lever (on right) to the lowest
position.

2) Manually feed your paper through the rear slot.

3) Align the paper with the sides of the printer so that
it is square to the print direction.

4) Look through the open lid and push the paper about 1cm
(nearly half an inch) past the line of grey feed rollers.

5) Lift the paper feed lever to the envelope setting so
that the paper is gripped.

6) Press the paper button on the front panel and the paper
will align ready for printing.

I hope this helps.

On the back of the 2200 is a lever you depress all the way to load heavier paper like HPR.
After loading move the lever all the way up then down one click and the paper will feed in
a normal fashion.

I had a similar problem (though very rarely), running 300 GSM Museo Silver
Rag, which is very thick and very inflexible, through my 2400. The rear slot
solution is probably ideal but if your computer desk setup is like mine, it
is impractical. I solved the problem by using corrugated cardboard to raise
the leading edge of the paper to just the right height and using two empty
fifty sheet boxes on the output tray to support the exiting paper at just
the right height. Smooth entry, smooth exit, no more problem. This might not
work for you and the 2200 but it works for me.

Hello Olaf,

Are you aware that the paper exit tray extends and raises up to the
paper level? Once the front flap is down, push in on it and then
release the pressure and it comes out and up to the paper level. Then
if you pull on the flap it slides out far enough to catch 13x19 paper.
Very clever. Some engineer earned his paycheck on that one.

Clayton

I find my 2200s very reliable with 300gsm paper (Entrada...letter size
or 13X19, same story), loaded from the back. Using 190gsm (again
Entrada) a little push helps from the top, but otherwise that's
reliable too.

If you're looking for a bright white alternative to EEM, check Moab
Kayenta..it's as bright or brighter and there's none of that rapid EEM
yellowing, at least in the year or so I've used it.

Thanks. I was completely unaware of this feature. It eliminates the need for
extra support on the exit side. Is there a feature that I don't know about
that would eliminate the need for the corrugated board on the feed side that
raises the leading edge of the paper to just the right height?

Thanks again.
