QTR, R2400 & Rear Sheet Feed problem

QTR, R2400 & Rear Sheet Feed problem

2007-01-11 by Gary Benson

Hi Folks,

I'm having a problem with QTR and the manual rear sheet feed on my new Epson 2400.
This is the Manual Rear Feed (Roll) setting in QTR. On my system/printer the paper is not
positioned correctly when it starts printing. Instead of positioning the paper to center the
image, it begins printing even before the far left edge of the paper is under the print head,
then continues printing. The particular image I printed had a landscape orientation. I
have not tried printing an image with a portrait orientation (although I wouldn't think that
should matter). The final printed image is shifted to the far left side of the paper instead
of being centered. The same image prints just fine when I print directly from Photoshop
using the rear sheet feed on the 2400. QTR positions the paper and prints from
the top sheet feeder on my 2400 just fine. QTR also works fine when I use the rear sheet
feed on my Epson 2200. I am using the latest version of QTR on a Windows XP system.

I've posted this problem to the QTR forum and got a response from one other person
having the same problem. Roy Harrington isn't aware of this a known problem and so I'm
trying to find out if others are experiencing it and then provide feedback to Roy.

So, for anyone using QTR on the Epson 2400 -- please let me know whether the manual
rear sheet feed is working for you ok or not. If this is a widespread but little mentioned
problem, then I can let Roy know and I'm sure he'll figure out a solution/fix. If not, I'm
back to square one (and keeping my 2200 for those heavy fine art papers we love).

Thanks alot!

I use the single sheet guide and rear feeder with QTR and have had a few
problems with the printer not being able to grab the paper. It was remedied
when I took the curl out of the paper. I haven't seen your problem however.

What paper are you using? You can also load thick media from the front.
Have you tried that?

For what it's worth, I have trouble with the normal feed route on my 2400
with paper that feeds great on other printers, like my 220 and 2200. All I
use the 2400 for is color on thin paper.

Tom,

I have had no problems getting my 2400 to feed the paper (Epson Velvet
Fine Art) through the single sheet rear feeder. For both QTR and when
printing directly from Photoshop, the paper is position the same until
the printer actually receives the image and starts printing. At that
point, printing from Photoshop, the printer repositions the paper so
that the image is correctly centered on the paper and it starts
printing. With QTR, the paper is not repositioned correctly and it
just starts printing on the far left edge of the paper.

I haven't used the front sheet feeder because I don't have much room
at the back of my printer to receive the paper. This is one thing I
really like about the 2400 vs the 2200 (needing less space at the back
to feed the heavier paper through to the front tray).

I'm at a loss as to how I can fix this problem with the 2400 and QTR
on my system. I have only heard from 3 people who are using QTR with
the 2400. One of them experienced this problem, the other two did not.

When problems like this arise in digital print making the I find the
mysteries of how a computer, printer and software all work together
(or not) a little frustrating.

Not everyone would find it convenient, but I've moved my printers off
the desktop and onto an Anthro cart with the optional larger casters
and Griffin's USB hub. It's parked in an opposite corner until I want
to print, when I wheel it close enough to the computer to connect the
hub, but not so close that the paper's entry or exit is impeded.

Re: QTR, R2400 & Rear Sheet Feed problem

2007-01-14 by Roy Harrington

Hi Gary,

I've been wondering what could be causing your situation. I just (again)
tried my R2400, Windows XP, QTR 2.4.3 and positioning worked exactly correct.
I know I've mentioned using Manual Roll (Rear) and you've confirmed that. But,
this must be done on the QTRgui page -- not on the Epson driver Page Setup.
If you select the Manual Roll on the Epson driver that has no effect on the QTR
driver since they are completely independent. Going into "Printer & Faxes"
and setting Printer Properties is all dealing with the Epson driver.

BTW, when you say "starts printing on the far left edge" I'm assuming you are printing
landscape and the print is starting on the leading edge coming out of the
printer. Correct?

Roy

Re: QTR, R2400 & Rear Sheet Feed problem

2007-01-14 by Gary Benson

Hi Roy,

Thanks for verifying again that this works fine with your 2400 and
system. That's the same operating system and version of QTR that I'm
using. I'm definitely selecting the Manual Roll (Rear) setting in
QTRgui -- I wouldn't have thought to set it anywhere else while using QTR.

And yes..I've been printing a landscape oriented image and it's
printing on the leading edge of the paper coming out of the printer,
so that when you look at the finished print, there is no white border
on the left side of the paper, the whole image is shifted to the left.

I guess I will completely uninstall QTR, reinstall it and try again
from the beginning. I had upgraded to QTR 2.4.3 from an earlier 2.3.x
version when I got the 2400. Once I uninstall/reinstall QTR and try
it again, I'll let you know what happens.

I suppose it could be a weird problem with this particular printer. I
just don't have a clue as to how the whole paper positioning
software/printer command works.

I love using QTR, so I'm anxious to get this little glitch sorted out
on my system. Thanks again Roy for creating such a great program...I
know I've only scratched the surface of what can be done with it.

Re: For Roy re QTR, R2400 & Rear Sheet Feed problem

2007-01-14 by Gary Benson

Hi Roy,

I just uninstalled QTR (using the Uninstall.exe utility in the
QuadtoneRIP folder) and then reinstalled QTR 2.4.3.10. I was
surprised that when I installed the new version it didn't ask me which
printer models I wanted to install (per Tom Moore's write up and my
experience when I first installed QTR). In fact, when I started up
QTR it had my three printers listed (1280, 2200 & 2400). Does it get
this info from Windows installed printers now? Anyways, assuming the
uninstall/reinstall went ok, I tried printing my image using the
Manual Roll (Rear) setting again. Placement Centered checked, of course.

Same problem again, no white border on the leading edge of the paper,
which of course, when you're looking at the print after it's out of
the printer is not the left edge, it's the right edge. I can't
believe I was misstating it all this time. As I was watching it come
out of the printer from my vantage point it was the left edge, but
looking at the completed print with the correct orientation, it's the
right edge of course. Sorry if this created unneccessary confusion.

I was really hoping this reinstall would do the trick. Let me know if
you can think of any way for me to help diagnose the cause of this
problem on my system/printer. Thanks for all your help!
