CS3 and RAM use

CS3 and RAM use

2007-05-05 by Patrick Kealey

I currently use CS2, and am considering upgrading to CS3. I have 3 Gigs
RAM and CS2 will recognize 2 Gigs. My OS is XP home, and the question I
have is will CS3 recognize 3 Gigs of RAM without going to a 64 bit OS?

I tried Adobe support, and was not sure of their answer as it was from
a far off place and I don't think they understood my question.

Thanks,
Patrick

Re: [Digital BW] CS3 and RAM use

2007-05-05 by Alan Ansell

FWIW I've always answered my Adobe questions via a google search and not via Adobe support. Sometimes the search results point me to an Adobe forum but more often than not, questions like OS issues are often posted on tech forums and the like.

I tried Adobe support, and was not sure of their answer as it was from
a far off place and I don't think they understood my question.
Thanks,
Patrick

Re: [Digital BW] CS3 and RAM use

Patrick, I don't think so. This link,
http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-6146229-7.html

is a Blog note from CNet about PS CS 3 NOT being a 64 bit app. It was
written back in Dec 06 so things could have changed by now.

This link,
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=320005

is a tech paper from Adobe talking about memory allotment for PC's
and Mac's.

It seems that the issue of using more RAM in PS is an OS issue, not a
Photoshop one.

Good luck, Alan

CS3 off topic?

2007-05-06 by Larry Ostrom

I am about to buy CS3 for my mac... and I am wondering how I can load
it into two computers the first one being my working computer and the
second is my print server.
thanks in advance and I hope this is not tooo000 far off topic.

Since the release of CS (v1) on Macs Adobe has instituted a software
activation routine. The single user license allows for two installs
since many users will have a desktop and a laptop. So you can install
CS3 on two machines. Once activated on both, you cannot install PS on
another machine unless you A) purchase another serial number or B)
first deactivate one of your current installs.

Larry,

Should not be a problem to load CS3 on two computers as long as they are
both MAC. If one is a MAC and one a PC then you need two copies?

Re: CS3 and RAM use

Yes....but....

You need to use the /3GB "switch" in Win/XP.

I have 4GB, but Win/XP only recognizes ~3GB (I have actually set is at
2944MB, as I have a lot of v-ram) as the upper ~1GB is used for
drivers, video ram, etc. I am not sure what you will get with 3GB in
your system, but I suspect most of it.

The "but" is that it is processor dependent whether it will work...at
least with CS3. I have a AMD Athlon 2x64 (dual core). The CS3 forums
have many Intel dual core guy saying it is not working with CS3, but
did with CS2.

Be careful when you set it up. Include the existing line from
your 'boot.ini' along with the new one with the /3GB info. That way if
the new line does not work you can reboot with the "other OS".

Re: [Digital BW] Re: CS3 and RAM use

2007-05-10 by Bob Frost

Alan,

I think you are correct.

 http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

says the /3GB switch was added to XP Pro, but only works with programs that
know how to use the extra 1GB, not all programs.

You may also have to use another switch in your boot.ini - /userva=2900 -
which restricts the memory to 2900 instead of 3000, because some video
drivers won't fit into the 1GB left. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316739

My nVidia driver won't load with just /3GB but when I added /userva=2900 it
ran just fine.

Bob Frost.

PS You shouldn't use the /3GB switch if you have more than 16GB RAM
apparently! I doubt that affects many of us!!

There is a lot of confusion about the /3 GB switch and XP Home!

This switch can work with XP Home (not guaranteed, anymore than it is
with XP Pro). I discovered the switch is supported by XP Home a few
weeks ago. I have been using it without problems on my Dell Dimension
8400 with 4 GB of RAM.

I get around 2.6 GB virtual memory available to user applications with
it on, about 1.7 GB with it off. I am also using the 'fine tuning'
switch /userva with the /3GB switch.

Thanks to all that replied, I will be working this nite on the issue and from what I picked up on the link provided by Kenseidman and others it will work (think +).
