letter size B&W printer...inexpensive, good?

letter size B&W printer...inexpensive, good?

2007-05-16 by djon43

A friend wants a letter-size printer...he's a very fine darkroom guy
and photographer... he needs a decent inkjet for his B&W files and
he'd like to spend under $200.

Ideas?

How about C86? Is C88 the same machine? Better/worse/comparable?

Does it do good B&W with Epson pigs and standard driver? Is Black Only
available and does it look more neutral than 2200 does? What about
clogging? Do MIS inks make them less reliable?

Thanks, John

I posted a similar message a while back but got no response. MIS lists the Easy BW UT system for the C82, C84 & C86 Epson Printers ... but in New Zealand the nearest printers I can find are the C87+ and the R230.

I asked MIS if these printers would be supported but also got no response.

Does *anyone* know if these printers are likely to be compatible with MIS UT inks at some stage?

thanks,
Richard

C88 with MIS EZ, maybe refurb 220 with MIS R2 ...

They are close. I have some posted on the C88 at

No, use MIS EZ B&W inks. Then the Epson driver works well. The neutral for
2 spots and warm in the yellow is what I recommend for the most neutral.

We're rather in a transition to the 260 now. I suspect by the end of summer
it'll be the entry machine of choice. But it's too early now.

G'day Richard -

I've been using an Epson 230 (same as U.S. 220) with the MIS UT-R2 ink set and it works very well.

If you go to Clayton's web site at:
http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

then click on article #10 - A Variable Tone Ink Set for the Epson R200/220 Using MIS UT-R2 inks. He explains it beautifully (as usual) and I love the B & W prints I get from it. (Thank you Clayton!)

Best,

I've been quite pleased with MIS EZ inks in two C84s and now a C88. (I
have an 84 and the 88 loaded with the MIS ink, while the other 84 is a
backup - has Epson carts for the occasional color work unless and until
I need it for B&W work.) The C88 is an Epson refurb that I think I paid
$49 for, including shipping. They are not the longest lasting devices -
I wore out a C84 in about 3000 sheets - but that's still less than 2
cents per letter size print in printer cost. Even in bulk the MIS EZ
ink costs more than that.

Cheers,
Kip

For what it's worth, I traded a few e-mails a few months ago with the MIS folks about when they'd be supporting the R260 for B&W along the lines of the C series printers. Their reply was that they were working on it, but didn't expect anything to be available for 6 months or so. Short answer was they were working on it.
